LarmerTJR : 2/16/2020 4:01 pm
BREAKING: #NJDevils† trade Andy Greene to the Islanders for a 2021 2nd round pick and D David Quenneville.
Good.
JayBinQueens : 2/16/2020 4:05 pm : link
Isles need a veteran d to give the other 6 guys an occasional rest.

Waived his NTC to get moved
Isles need scoring

The Devils have traded Blake Coleman to the Avís as well
Jay on the Island : 2/16/2020 4:27 pm : link
They better get a great return for Coleman because I didnít want him to be traded.

Coleman has not been traded, at least not yet.

I'm with you Jay did not want to trade Coleman at all. He's turned himself into a real good all around player who can pump in 20-30 goals and kill penalties. He was signed on the cheap through next year. He's just entering his mid 20's. He's one of the type of guys you rebuild with, not trade away. Colorado's pick in the mid to late 20's doesn't enthuse me.
Now I'm hearing its possibly Boston for Coleman
Stu11 : 2/16/2020 5:15 pm : link
even less happy. they're pick will suck even more and he can help the shitheads in that city win another cup.

If true, one less option for Kreider.
I would rather trade Palmieri than Coleman
Jay on the Island : 2/16/2020 5:21 pm : link
I donít love trading either but Palmieri is older. If they trade Coleman for a late 1st then Fitzgerald needs to be replaced ASAP. The Greene trade was a great move for he Devils.

Yep the Greene trade was a must do
Stu11 : 2/16/2020 5:55 pm : link
Jay I know it's an un-dying theme around here with the Giants but if I'm the Devils owners I clean house. New GM, shake up the scouting dept and take a deep dive into the minors and what the hell is going on down there because our player development has been absolute garbage for coming up on a decade. Nobody is getting better. Coleman was a rare find. McLeod? Garbage. Quennville? Same. Tedenby...Boucher...Joseffson the list goes on and on. We've developed 1 solid #1 goalie Blackwood in 2 decades. Forget about the defense it's been a horror show (though mostly neglected in the early draft rds) the Devs are very lucky they are buried attention wise in this area because they've been a complete shit show since 2012.
Stu
Jay on the Island : 2/16/2020 6:25 pm : link
I agree 1000% that they need to clean house. Not just the FO but also the AHL staff which has a pathetic track record developing talent over the past decade.

The Devils need a fresh new mind at GM.

2nd round picks are valuable draft capital in trades. Considering lack of 2020 picks the Islanders donít have a lot to deal.

According to Rotoworld it is the 1st that Tampa acquired from Vancouver
I love Coleman
Stu11 : 2/16/2020 7:57 pm : link
And not sure I do that deal but that is a damn good return.
I hate so see Coleman go
Jay on the Island : 2/16/2020 8:19 pm : link
But that is a solid return especially if the 1st round pick is the Canucks.
The Devils now have three 1st round picks
Jay on the Island : 2/16/2020 8:43 pm : link
Their own, the Coyotes, and the Canucks.
The Nucks
Sammo85 : 2/16/2020 8:53 pm : link
pick is playoff protected to punt to 2021 if they miss playoffs. But theyíre likely getting a 7 or 8 seed. Coyotes have been floundering and may now very likely now miss so that pick may end up in top 15. Bad trade for them if they donít resign Hall.

Still, Foote is a superb add to the prospect pool and Iíd expect heís playing in NJ next year on either Hughes or Hischiers wing.

Not surprised Devils have added two bigger physical players in Bahl and Foote. Seems an attempt to balance out and blend with some of the smaller skill guys theyíve built up elsewhere.

Next up I expect Vatanen and Simmonds to go. I expect they will keep Palmieri, Wood, Zacha, Severson but you never know.
one of 2 things:
Stu11 : 2/16/2020 9:07 pm : link
1. We need Vats to get back on the ice by the weekend so we can get a nice return for him by the deadline
or
2.We need to re-sign him and have him be an anchor on the backline for the kid parade that has begun.
we have truckloads of cap room right now so really no contract for 1 or 2 good players is a bad one
The Devils are very young now
Jay on the Island : 2/16/2020 9:25 pm : link
But they need to move Vatanen and Simmonds before the deadline. With Coleman gone they should move Palmieri but only at the right price. Now they can let the young kids Bratt, Butcher, Hughes, Anderson, Zacha, Merkley gain much needed playing time. Boqvist will likely be promoted to replace Coleman.

The good news is that Blackwood has been outstanding of late in net and is the #1 moving forward. They need a much better backup though. Domingue and Schneider are awful.

I hope the Devils sign Nolan Foote, Reilly Walsh, and Kevin Bahl to ELCís this off-season to join Ty Smith in NJ.
Love Nolan
pjcas18 : 2/16/2020 9:33 pm : link
Foote.

Big body, skill, pedigree, top 6 forward before too long.

He was really good in the World Juniors. I was pissed he played for Canada.

But I guess if I was Adam Foote and my son was this caliber a player he'd play for my country too.

Great trade. both of them actually for the Devils.

PK next?

Coleman is one of the more underrated players in the league though. Such a smart player, great on the PK. Makes TB even better. IF, big IF, they can get the chemistry right in TB, unlike last year.

Bahl/Foote
Stu11 : 2/16/2020 10:10 pm : link
Now all we have to do is win the lottery again get Lafreniere and we can re-unite the Team Canada juniour All Stars lol

Don't the NYI have all their 2020 picks? That's what I'm seeing on capfriendly.

Agree they need more scoring, but if anything I think this deal makes it seem more likely they will make another move vs. less likely. Why add a 38 year rental at all unless you are going for it now? And why strategically deal a 2021 draft pick and not a 2020 draft pick?

So I'm mostly indifferent on this deal, nice depth pickup, though if Hickey is close to being ready not sure how much it was needed. But I do like that they seem to be going for it so I'm hoping we see more of that. If I were Lou I'd be shopping the first very aggressively for a 3c, though I wouldn't want to deal the first for a pure rental.
On the one hand, it sucks that the Devils got a first rounder and a

On the other hand, it shows me that Kreider should get a HUGE haul, as he is 10x the player Blake Coleman is.

Kreider is UFA after season. Heíll get a solid return. Likely 1 and prospect. Also different players. Colemanís an elite PK forward who can play good defense at forward. His goal scoring talent has really shined more in recent years. Kreider is a power forward with speed and high end offensive skill. Iíd prefer Coleman over Kreider going forward over longer term. Kreider and his occasional issues staying healthy and being streaky scares me on a longer term deal as he nears and goes over 30.
Yea Coleman and Krieder
bhill410 : 2/17/2020 7:57 am : link
Are completely different contract situations so kind of apples and oranges. Also keep in mind the value Coleman brings is of heightened need in playoffs. Itís a dated return but Hall is a more comparable trade although Hall is a better player than Krieder.

You canít compare the two. Kreider will be a free agent after this season who will command a big contract. Coleman is under contract next season for a paltry $1.8 million dollar cap hit. Coleman is also an elite penalty killer.
Itís very confusing that Shero was fired
Jay on the Island : 2/17/2020 10:21 am : link
Mainly because he wanted to continue the rebuild but ownership wanted to compete. Now his temporary replacement just traded away a key core player and the team is in clear rebuild mode again.

This. Hopefully he gets back on the ice soon. As for Coleman I stand corrected he's 28 not 25. That does change my thinking a bit because frankly we look to be not much better next year and if we're in the same spot next Feb. Coleman a pending UFA coming up on 30 would never have gotten near this return. Interesting that the Devs are basically facing a social media revolt from the fans. Not a surprise as Coleman may have been the most popular Devil at this point. However me I always remember the Seinfeld quote: players come and go basically we're rooting for laundry. I have to say I was worried that as an interim Fitzgerzld may be in over his head at the deadline, but he definitely proved yesterday that he won't be fleeced.

I've been a fan of the team since '84-85 and frankly this is the most miserable season I can ever remember. I was so excited for the season after the summer and literally they blow a 4 goal lead opening night and start off like 0-6 with no hope from the starting gate. Now Shero is gone and the organization is is pretty much full rebuild. Fitz made it clear last night that they are rebuilding around Jack, Nico and Blackwood so don't be shocked if any other player is dealt before next Monday including Palms. Jay who knows what the story is with Shero. I've heard the same but who knows. These owners are the Sixers guys and they are very much into the NBA mentality of turn it into a show and promote attendance (which has actually been pretty good despite the awful Last 2 seasons) so I have a feeling they were upset he didn't make a bigger effort to get Hall locked up.
Stu
Jay on the Island : 2/17/2020 11:46 am : link
I read that ownership was very angry that Shero was comfortable with Schneider as the backup. I agreed with them as I wanted them to bring in a better option especially seeing what Lehner settled for.

This season has been a monumental let down as a fan. I was convinced this was a playoff team but I was concerned with Hynes as HC and Schneider in net. Both concerns proved valid as both played a huge role in the terrible start. As we know Hynes and Shero are close which clearly clouded Sheroís judgement.
Jay definately he stuck way too long with Hynes

I think the next coaching hire is huge. There are so many good ones out there- Laviolette, Gallant, now Boudreau. As we've seen with the Islanders a great coach means everything in hockey. No matter your talent level things can turn around in a hurry if the right system is implemented. Look at Columbus and Torts. You tell me what GM would want That Columbus roster? And here they are right in the thick of the playoff hunt.
Stu
Jay on the Island : 2/17/2020 12:41 pm : link
It’s very frustrating that Gallant is available yet the Devils have shown no interest in him yet. Laviolette would be a great pickup as well. The Devils are an intriguing team with a lot of young talent plus a lot of cap room. They should be an attractive destination for coaches and gm’s.

Probably not moving on Gallant or Laviolette now because they want to involve new GM in the Head Coach search. I get that both coaches have been to Stanley Cup Finals (and Laviolette has won a Stanley Cup), but both have worn out their welcome in a number of places. Gallant in particular has not made it through 3 complete seasons in any of the places he has coached. I understand that you no longer have coaches like Al Arbour spending a decade plus with a team, but when it happens repeatedly that is a red flag.

Mike thats hockey. Coaches have a shelf life for the most part. Torts has bounced around, Trotz was in Nashville forever but then left Washington after 4 seasons. Tough demanding coaches are going to wear out their welcome at some point. I don't think a young up and comer looking for their first shot is what this team needs right now. They need an organized guy with a winning system like they got with Jacques in '94 to shake things up.
