NFT: The NY Knicks and...Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright?

Anakim : 2/17/2020 9:04 am
“There is a strong possibility that Jay Wright in New York could happen,” one league source said.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 2/17/2020 9:20 am : link
He's been linked to 76ers if/when they cut Brown loose.
I wouldn't have a problem with that at all
Greg from LI : 2/17/2020 9:20 am : link
Don't know why he'd want the job, but that's a different discussion.
I doubt this happens
BigBlueShock : 2/17/2020 9:21 am : link
If Wright were to even slightly open up the possibility of going to the NBA, I think the Sixers would fire Brett Brown on the spot. He’ll likely be fired anyways. I would have to believe the Sixers would have a much better chance at Wright. Much better roster and he’s already in Philly
Shit..

As a ‘Nova guy, I hope not.

Why would you give up a top 10 ncaa job for an opportunity to work at the cesspool better known as Dolan’s MSG? With continued growth, he could have another final four team in 2021. It sure beats losing over 50 games a year for the foreseeable future.

Because he’s confident in his abilities and wants to fix one of the most powerful franchises in pro sports ? Nah couldn’t be...

These guys want it. They aren’t afraid of a challenge, unlike fans who are jaded and cynical.

Jay is too smart to go work for Dolan. I doubt this even has any legs.

This 1000%. Stay at Nova Jay. But sadly, it's only a matter of time before he goes to the NBA. So if he does, might as well be the Knicks.

Get it done, Leon.

Who said he's afraid of a challenge?
Greg from LI : 2/17/2020 10:02 am : link
He's wise enough to never work for the most worthless, destructive owner in professional sports.
Consider the source. Adam Zagoria has no clue.
Crispino : 2/17/2020 10:18 am : link
UCLA offered to double Jay’s salary and he passed.
When asked why, he said “You don’t mess with happy.” He’s from the Villanova area, his wife is an alumna, has unlimited security, and plenty of money.

Never say never, but I don’t see this happening. It’s click bait.
In other Knicks rumblings, Berman says..

According to an NBA source, the Knicks scouting staff has been instructed the top priority is a scoring point guard on whom to use their lottery pick.

The second priority, likely for the Clippers’ pick, is a shooting guard who has 3-point range — something rookie RJ Barrett has not shown.

Jay has won twice in Nova..

Makes sense. RJ is a 3. He's always been a 3, always will be a 3. On that note, Knox is a 4.

Well, Lamelo Ball isn’t really known as a scorer so if that’s the criteria, we may not be interested.

And I guess for the other pick, maybe Aaron Nesmith or the Florida State kid?
Yeah, Berman mentioned LaMelo
bceagle05 : 2/17/2020 11:08 am : link
but you're right, he's not a scorer - he does have the CAA connection though. I personally would like the pick, but I know the Ball family is polarizing.

Nesmith would be nice - he reminds me of Kris Middleton. Maybe they can use that Charlotte second rounder to jump up a few spots for him if need be.
So need as opposed to talent.

Yep. Never a winning formula.
Frank, DSJ and Payton were drafted 8th, 9th and 10th, respectively.
bceagle05 : 2/17/2020 11:31 am : link
So yeah, you can't just pick point guards for the hell of it. Tough to compete in the NBA without a good point guard though - NBA teams chase them the way NFL teams chase quarterbacks.
Getting back to Jay Wright,
bceagle05 : 2/17/2020 11:36 am : link
I wonder what kind of say in personnel he would demand? Can't imagine he'd sign up for the typical structure and have to answer to Rose and a GM, plus Dolan of course.
So this goes back about 5/6 years

But Jay was all but signed to be Boston College head coach. Him and his wife met with BC president and board and numbers were agreed upon. After consideration wife determined that she did not want to move (has very strong ties to philly and nova) and taht was that. Now NYC is way different distance wise and NBA is more compelling that BC (to say least). But there was a strong desire not to relocate at that point. Forget how old their kids are now so that could impact things.
SF and Shock are right...

The Sixers are his dream job and they may just have an opening coming up.
Lots of opportunities to add shooting this summer.
bceagle05 : 2/17/2020 2:33 pm : link
Draft: Nesmith, Ramsey (LAC pick, perhaps a slight trade up)
Trade: Hield and Markkanen (both unhappy w/current teams)
FA: Gallo, Bertans, Morris, Bogdanovic, Joe Harris, Marcus Morris, etc.

I wouldn't mind one from each group.

This is how the game is played. His agent will float his name and take calls, while he will insist he loves where he is at and isn't going anywhere. If he gets an offer he can't refuse, he won't refuse it. Otherwise he will stay and insist he never seriously considered leaving.
While the scouts should keep their eyes out
Jan in DC : 2/18/2020 8:55 am : link
for a scoring PG and a good shooting SG, they should also keep their eyes open for any good player at any position that can play in the NBA. This team lacks so much talent that they shouldn't feel the need to push.
Another big name floated to come and save the Knicks
Heisenberg : 2/18/2020 8:58 am : link
If Rose can actually land a really good coach like Wright, that would be the first of these names to actually come to the Knicks. I'll believe it when I see it.

They are adults and from what I understand no longer live at home. To add fuel to the rumor Jay and his wife will be putting their house up for sale bc they would like to downsize now that the kids are 'no longer around'. Another thing is Villanova recently finished a big renovation of their on-campus arena (it's still no comparison to the vast majority of D1 schools let alone one with 3 National championships but that's a different story) but there were rumors that the renovations were the 'last thing on Jay's list to do at 'nova'.

I'm a 'nova guy (class of '86 and daughter class of 2013) and it's not the first time Jay's name has been attached to an NBA job. But I just don't see it happening, he's almost 60 and can do whatever he wants at 'nova and has the accolades of the administration and alumni. Maybe he has the ego to 'prove something in the NBA' but imo, not to the extent to deal w players that outearn him, overbearing press, nosy owners and being on the road (college games are mostly twice a week, and when playing away they fly out the day before and return immediately after the game). And he makes almost $4M and Fisdale's salary was $5.5M; I understand $1.5M is a lot of money but Jay has all the money he and his family needs.

You must have missed the part where I told you he’s been through this before. UCLA offered to double his $5 million per year salary. He’s been courted for a half dozen other high profile college jobs. He likes where he is. I believe him when he repeats his oft repeated mantra “You don’t mess with happy.”

I just find it hard to believe it would be the Knicks. He will receive much better opportunities if he so desires.
Thibs "can taste it," according to Berman

The much better bet is Thibodeau, who has spent unemployment traveling to different basketball outposts, according to sources. In fact, two sources said Thibodeau doesn’t currently have a permanent residence as he awaits his next job.

When not traveling, the unmarried Thibodeau made his home base at his brother’s place in New England.

“He really wants the Knick job, he can taste it and he may even be in the lead,” a Thibodeau confidant said.

The Post reported last week Thibodeau and Jeff Van Gundy will be on Rose’s short list.

”He’s been visiting teams, but primarily hanging out in LA near Doc (Rivers) and Tyronn (Lue),” the source said.

Thibodeau also showed up at Golden State headquarters to give coach Steve Kerr advice on newcomer Andrew Wiggins, whom he coached in Minnesota. Thibodeau was Rivers’ top defensive assistant in Boston. The former Knicks assistant also has past ties with Rose at Creative Artists Agency.

“Rose has always been known as much more ethical than most agents, and if he can deliver players and let a strong coach coach, this could work out,” the Thibodeau confidant said. “It’s never a sure thing because of ownership, but Thibs knows he can work with Rose and also knows he’d be able to bring in his people as well.”

The Knicks top priority in any draft should be to find the best player possible no matter what position he plays. They should zero in on position through FA. But this is the Knicks and they are fucking morons.
Kyrie out with shoulder again and once again there is prospect
shyster : 2/19/2020 12:12 am : link
he may miss the rest of the season.

And there's no guarantee that shoulder surgery will have him 100% for 2020-21. Sometimes arthroscopic surgery works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes taking out the bone spur makes the shoulder less functional.

That's why Dellin Betances has still never had surgery on his bone spur, even though it was identified in 2006 and cost him the 2019 season.

I would not trade places with the Nets.

he ran his bulls teams into the ground and lasted what like 2+ seasons in MIN and one ok year. Plus his coaching style is not a fit for todays NBA. Hopefully Rose is smart enough to realize that. Berman is just going to keep listing names that the avg fan might have heard of whether the knicks are actually interested in them or not.
