Read about this story this morning.
And it sounds like Huff has tweeted some pretty controversial things (misogynistic comments about a SF female coach they hired, and generally support for our current President). Most people will simply say "Good, Huff is a piece of shit" or something like that because of his controversial comments or his political views. And while I don't agree with his comments, I think this is a dangerous precedent.
I don't know if this discussion will last on here, probably not, and I don't care if they invite Huff or not, but the thing I have an issue with (one issue) is the person who uninvited Huff very publicly, on video tape, committed domestic assault and was suspended by MLB because of it. Huff just has some shitty opinions.
I get he's the CEO and Huff isn't but it just seems so contrived, PC, and hypocritical. Huff had more of a role in the WS win than the CEO did.
Should they look through everyone's twitter history and see that no one has made any controversial comments?
This slippery slope is a standard that is only adhered to when it's convenient, but every now and then trips up someone unintended.

Seems like a normal dude...
Seems like a normal dude...
No picture of him with a gun (not in his hand at least, he was holding a target he and his boys used for target practice), tweeted that he was training his boys how to use a gun, and a thinly veiled allusion to violence.
but it's irrelevant to me, that's why he can't be part of a reunion? Because he trained his boys in how to use firearms because he thinks under socialism that skill may be necessary?
even if you think he's bat shit crazy, it seems like he should be allowed to have that opinion.
"Another post suggested that he wanted to “kidnap about 10” Iranian women “bring them back here as they fan us and feed us grapes, amongst other things.”
Huff would later note that he “never said rape.”"
Get together and celebrate the anniversary of the World Series. No reason to have a kind of litmus test on the perceived character of various former players.
But it does have repercussions.
Think this guy would get hired for a job?
100%. He got his ring, he can say what he wants. A private company can also opt not to associate with him.
Quote:
He also said he wanted to enslave Iranian women and quite a few other offensive things. No one's putting him in jail for expressing his opinions, but he leaves himself vulnerable to these lesser consequences. If the Giants don't want him representing their brand in any way, they have every right to exclude him.

Spot on.
If you buy that, I'm concerned at what else you would buy.
Huff's explanation of the Iranian tweet was weak, but an explanation, the rest of his tweets that I've read are misogynistic, and I wouldn't tweet any of what he said nor do I agree with it, but I fail to see how he's crossed the line of "this guy who significantly helped us win a WS cannot be in this stadium for this event recognizing that championship team"
Just doesn't make sense to me.
political makes way more sense.
@aubrey_huff
Does nobody have a sense of humor anymore!?
🤦🏻♂️
The way Iranian women are treated over there I simply wanted 2 say I’d go there 2 rescue them & bring them back 2 the states. And they would be so thankful 2 escape that hell that they’d fan me & feed me grapes. Never said rape!
🙄

The owner of the Giants is a MAJOR supporter of the President
As for the domestic violence case, here's a statement from the CEO's wife:
"I would like to clarify the events of today. My husband and I had an argument in public about which we are quite embarrassed. I took his cell phone. He wanted it back and I did not want to give it back. I started to get up and the chair I was sitting in began to tip. Due to an injury I sustained in my foot three days ago, I lost my balance. I did not sustain any injury based on what happened today. Larry and I always have been and still are happily married."
I'd shed no tears if they decided to fire that guy, but it feels like you're stretching to draw a parallel here.
(Please don't make this more political than it's meant to be, just providing proof that the owner of the team is a supporter of the president so to blame Huff simply vocally doing the same just doesn't work here)
As someone posted above, if you want to tweet offensive stuff, go for it, but dont then be surprised when there is repercussions.
And these isnt political at all. If your seeing this as political then your looking for it. This is a guy tweeting offensive shit and the Giants dont want to deal with dumbass reporters asking "since you invited Huff you obviously support his belief that woman should be slaves, is that correct?"
Dude, don't be soooo PC...
it is littered with political tweets.
With sparsely other offensive tweets sprinkled in, some more offensive than others.
Mostly misogynistic things - that like i said I would not say, nor do I agree with.
And the Iran tweet was bad and his excuse weak.
but not bad enough IMO to be excluded from am event.
Pretty sure this is political, and no I'm not looking for it to be - why would I? but the other explanation seems like I said hypocritical and flimsy.
Did they do twitter backgrounds on all other members of the team?

Would your company welcome you to a reunion if you were publicly suggest that people go to the middle east and kidnap and rape women? I don't care what side of the aisle youre on Huff is a bad dude and appears to be unhinged. It's telling that you are one of the only ones on this thread lightly defending the guy
And yes, I believe Huff meant this as a joke. It was stupid and offensive, but no I don't think Huff was in any way serious or to be taken literally. Doesn't excuse it, but to me shouldn't exclude him from an event like this.
I don't believe his explanation about this tweet, I think he just thought this would be funny as a reply to another awful tweet.
2) In my opinion, the severity of a lot of his comments leave him open to this type of outcome and I have no problem with that. If the tweets were simply political in nature, I would disagree. But, the "joking" nature of a lot of the tweets is a weak justification.
3) The gun comment is being taken way out of context. He's not saying he's using it on Sanders. It's a weak and sarcastic commentary on the anarchy he thinks will result from a socialist program being implemented.
Quote:
a photo of him with a gun & alluding to violence if Sanders became president?
Seems like a normal dude...

Not "thinly veiled" at all. "Getting my boys trained up on how to use a gun in the unlikely event @BernieSanders beats @realDonaldTrump in 2020. In which case knowing how to effectively use a gun under socialism will be a must." Remember the guy who killed 77 (mostly innocent kids), in Norway in 2011. He also didn't agree with the country's political policies.
He also had a tweet in January that advocated kidnapping Iranian women so "we can bring them back here as they fan us and feed us grapes."
He has every right to have any opinion he wants. The right to have an opinion doesn't mean everyone has to accept it or you. The Giants have every right to decide whether they want their organization/business to be associated with someone with those opinions.
His response to the decision included "But if they want to stick with their politically correct, progressive bulls---, that's fine."
The Giants' aren't being politically correct or progressive by not wanting their business associated with threats of violence against political opponents or the idea of kidnapping and enslaving women. The Giants made a statement that as a business they oppose violence based on political beliefs, and the kidnapping and enslaving of women. It's a statement that they respect and welcome everyone to their business. I suspect (or at least hope) most businesses would do the same.
To give it a different twist, suppose he showed images of him and his kids burning the U.S. flag and using the Bible for target practice. Would it be "politically correct, progressive bulls---," if the Giants had decided not to include him?
And yes, I believe Huff meant this as a joke. It was stupid and offensive, but no I don't think Huff was in any way serious or to be taken literally. Doesn't excuse it, but to me shouldn't exclude him from an event like this.

...Let’s get a flight over and kidnap about 10 each. We can bring them back here as they fan us and feed us grapes, amongst other things….”
I read years ago, that Huff might be 'on the spectrum'
so to speak, so who knows with somebody like him.
Maybe the Giants just thought it was too much, and didn't want to deal with the possible backlash?
pjcas18...this has nothing to do with your posts, just the whole Huff's excuse on his tweets. Sorry if it comes off as me calling you out...definitely not my intention.
Larry Baer - ( New Window )
No one has taken away Huff's free speech rights. Free speech means the government can't take action against you. Try standing outside your employer's business at lunch hour and telling everyone that walks by that the guy who owns the company is a crook. I'm sure you'll be welcomed back at work with open arms.
Quote:
I'm defending speech and really pointing out that arbitrary lines are just that, arbitrary.

Larry Baer - ( New Window )
Oh, I'm sure he's probably a dirtbag as well, but doesn't take away from the fact that Huff is a POS. Whether Baer actually did this for moral reason or for business reason is immaterial at this point since as the owner of an organization, he can make the decision whether people call him a hypocrite or not.
The freedom of speech != to free of consequence is so dead one. Say whatever you want, but dont be surprised if there are consequences. If i make "jokes" at my work in a town hall meeting so everyone can hear it (basically twitter) about enslaving woman im pretty sure im going to get a call to HR pretty quickly

Hmmm...I'm definitely not familiar with his twitter...so how familiar are you?...;)
Aubrey Huff is a complete lunatic and asshole.
The principals and major sponsors of the Giants are not your typical liberal Bay Area operators. Many are reliable donors and supporters of conservative and Republican causes and candidates.
Huff isn't getting invited because he's a nut job asshole, not simply his support of the current administration.
Why was Jim Bouton banned from Yankees Old Timers day for decades?
This is nothing new.
Won't be the last time that happens.
Appreciate the civil discussion.
But it does have repercussions.
Think this guy would get hired for a job?
First Amendment: Aubrey Huff gets to be an asshole. I get to call him an asshole.
God bless America.
I'm not even on Twitter and know about Huff.
2) What did Leonard Marshall say/do?
Won't be the last time that happens.
Appreciate the civil discussion.
It's a really interesting debate. Public figures have more and more reach, and when their opinions don't align with their former/employers it gets dicey.
I'd hope most businesses and teams can exhibit enough openmindedness to not push out differing voices.
Larry Baer - ( New Window )
It would have been hypocritical if Baer hadn't been suspended and forced to issue an apology. He was suspended and lost 4 months' pay. Huff just isn't getting invited to a party.
"Physically attacked" might be misleading, based on what his wife said about the incident.
"I took his cellphone. He wanted it back and I did not want to give it back. I started to get up and the chair I was sitting in began to tip. Due to an injury I sustained in my foot three days ago, I lost my balance. I did not sustain any injury based on what happened today. Larry and I always have been and still are happily married.
"We were having a family fight about someone in my family and that's it."
When a celebrity or anyone famous/rich makes a political statement in support of a particular administration or cause or whatever, a lot of people respond by telling them to stay in their lane, whether it's acting, playing sports, or whatever. However, I argue that these people speaking up is exactly what you want to see from our society. Not because what they say has anymore validity or weight than what you and I (normal putz) say but more so because they are exercising their rights just like everyone else to speak up. Now they may have a larger platform, so their brand of idiocy may go further than our own brand of idiocy, but to tell them to stay in their lane just because they aren't in public service or the government seems misplaced, especially since the same can be said for the vast majority of us. You don't have to agree with what they say at all and may even openly disagree with their views in a vocal manner yourself (through social media, etc.); however, to tell them to stay in their own lanes seems hypocritical, no?
What's your thought?
