NFT: Knicks Chat: Rose expected to take over by 3/13

DanMetroMan : 2/19/2020 10:38 am
-The Wade tributes — called “L3GACY Celebration” — will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday’s event at AmericanAirlines Arena will be a series of tributes to honor Wade’s impact on the Heat and the South Florida community. Wade’s jersey No. 3 will be retired Saturday before the Heat host the Cavaliers.

Sunday, a documentary will be screened highlighting Wade’s NBA career, with the 13-time All-Star and three-time champion addressing the crowd.

The Knicks will play in Miami on March 13. By then, Rose should officially be the Knicks’ president.

-The Los Angeles Lakers reportedly have interest in wing Moe Harkless if he asks for a buyout from the New York Knicks.

During an appearance on ESPN LA 710's The Sedano Show, Sam Amick of The Athletic (h/t Silver Screen and Roll's Christian Rivas) said Tuesday that the Lakers are monitoring Harkless' situation in the event that the Knicks part with him.

While it remains to be seen if a buyout will occur, Marc Berman of the New York Post reported after Harkless was traded to New York from the Los Angeles Clippers as part of the deal that sent Marcus Morris to L.A. that the Knicks are willing to grant Harkless a buyout if he asks for one.

think teams should be awarded comp picks if a player you mutually bought out signs with another team that same year. Even if those picks are a "3rd round" (well aware it doesn't exist). It's still a lottery ticket of sorts.
I don't understand
PhilSimms15 : 2/19/2020 10:45 am : link
!why all these bad teams help the good teams by cutting loose good players for no compensation? It reduces the poor team's leverage at the trade deadline and strengthens other teams.

I assume this is done to be looked upon favorably by other NBA players but I have not seen it play out that way at all. I also assume the losing team saves some cash (not cap space).

Everyone enjoying this Knicks-free week?

2nd Half
Pete44 : 2/19/2020 11:45 am : link
It is going to be a very painful 2nd half of the season as the roster is terrible and the young players seemingly will still struggle to get burn as Mike Miller coaches for is life.

The lineup the rest of the season needs to be:

PG: Frank/Denis
SG: RJ/Dotson
SF: Knox/Iggy
PF: Randle
C: Mitch

Those guys need to play 30-40 mins per game and I don't care if they go small ball and move Randle to center and play this lineup at times:

PG: Denis
SG: Frank
SF: Barrett/Iggy
PF/C: Knox/Randle/Mitch

Bullock/Ellington/Portis/Gibson need to be coaches on the bench
Nah.

Luckily the "second half" is really just the final third of the season - Knicks have already played 55 games. But I agree, there won't be much gained the rest of the way. Just waiting til the offseason so we can blow things up again.
Yeah, I've seen enough of Bobby Portis.
bceagle05 : 2/19/2020 12:12 pm : link
He plays way too much, under any circumstances. Randle/Knox/Iggy should get all minutes at the four. Mitch/Taj take all the minutes at the five.

I very much look forward to a couple of first round picks replacing these vets next season.
Vets
31southst : 2/19/2020 1:17 pm : link
Which vets do you think make sense to return next year among the crop signed last offseason? They all pretty much have small ($1m) guarantees or team options for next year.

Portis - absolutely not
Taj - seems like a good mentor and honestly could be worse uses of cap space. Also can see wanting to free up minutes for Mitch and Julius as a C but will need more bigs anyway until Mitch can prove to consistently not foul.
Ellington - not worth $8m cap hit
Payton - don't love him but probably our best PG so keep him for next year. One more year doesn't hinder Frank if he develops and I have no faith DSJ will be playable next year.
Bullock - worth keeping at his small ($4.2m) number

I'd actually keep them all other than maybe Ellington.

Portis has value as a large expiring for a disgruntled star.

I'd rather just keep open cap space than Portis and it is equally useful in trading for a star (have to send less out if we have open space). The key is not waiving Portis to sign someone else to a worse deal.

My guess would be Bullock and Payton return.
bceagle05 : 2/19/2020 2:13 pm : link
Taj is a maybe, depending on the coach - Thibs or JVG would want him around.

Jon makes a good point about the Portis contract, but I still think Portis and Ellington are goners.

Randle becomes an expiring contract next year, too (team option for following season), so they still have that to work with for trade purposes.

I know we always wind up disappointed
bceagle05 : 2/19/2020 2:20 pm : link
but I'm intrigued by the Leon Rose hire. Very curious to see how he shapes the roster. He has a blank canvass - picks and young players to keep or trade, and money to spend.

Trying to be optimistic as well. But even though he’s been successful and well know around the league, he’s never made one trade or drafted one player. That scares me- especially the drafting aspect.

Has anyone heard why they didn’t wait to hire Rose? Was he really saying no to this job in June?

And Portis has to go. Terrible player and his expiring contract isn’t worth anything. Just get the cap space.
Rose
Pete44 : 2/19/2020 3:43 pm : link
The key to Rose's success will be who he hires as GM, scouts and head coach. They need to get the best of the best and money should be zero object.

He needs to change the culture. Some small things they need to do that will make people laugh:

1) Move the practice facility from White Plains to a more city friendly location. (Players have been on record, complaining about this).

2) Hire good developmental coaches - (Esp a shooting coach)

3) Rework the training staff
DSJ

”Dennis Smith Jr. is on pace to become the first player in NBA history to attempt more than 200 FG’s in a season and shoot:
below 35% from the floor,
below 30% from 3-point territory and,
below 50% from the free-throw line“

Unless they get incredibly luck with the Dallas picks, the Knicks got absolutely nothing for Porzingis. I really wonder what a competent GM could have gotten for him. But a competent GM wouldn’t have traded him...

I agree that the yield was slim. But I would have traded him if the alternative was to sign him to a Five-Year, $158 Million Contract.
Allan Houston appears to be replacing Mills as Dolan's mole...

As Leon Rose prepares for his imminent takeover, Garden constant Allan Houston has emerged as a candidate for a front office promotion, a league source told the Daily News.

The former All-Star, 48, is currently the GM of the G-League affiliate in Westchester and has been a Knicks executive since 2008, surviving multiple regime changes while being groomed for a larger role. He also served as the Knicks assistant GM before and during Phil Jackson’s tenure.

While Houston’s future with the organization seems safe, the rest of the front office is mostly in flux. According to a source, the Knicks hoped to hire Grizzlies executive Rich Cho but that’s now off the table. Word is Cho is happy in Memphis, where he serves as the vice president of basketball strategy for a franchise on the rise that features Ja Morant.

Don’t think their are superstars in this draft. But this kid is a two way player that is pure ball. Not buying the LaMelo hype.
