Appealing to the BBI braintrust for any thoughts, impressions, the good, the bad, the ugly, about UT. College decisions are being made and I’m trying to gather as much information as possible about the school, its reputation, living in Austin, etc.
Thanks gentlemen!
Top 10 programs in Engineering, Computer Science, Business School (Moody's), and a few others. In fact undergrad and grad Accounting is always #1 in the country.
Also the campus is really nice, its in Austin which is just about the most ideal city for college kids to go to school in, big time college sports, and good weather.
Ask questions and I will answer best I can. My son graduated with a Masters in Acct in 2018.
Its an excellent and well-funded school. Both Tier 1 and R1. Its also a MASSIVE school.
Austin itself is a great city, but bursting at the seams. Its become expensive (by Texas standards) and traffic is really congested. Its a liberal sanctuary in an otherwise pretty conservative state.
Its also hot, hot, hot 9 months a year. Some people like this. Some people hate it.

Shit I live in Tampa Bay and have no idea how people do gulf coast Texas. Place is unbearable six months of the year, opposed to like 3 here.
My daughter (out-of-state) was admitted to the Liberal Arts Honors college. We haven’t had a chance to visit yet — and in fact I’ve never once set foot in the State of Texas — but we keep hearing all these rave reviews and it’s making us think long and hard about it.
Questions: is being in an honors college an especially good perk? And, I’ve read various things about how a lot of the student housing is far away from the center of campus, thus requiring a pretty big commute — is that true?
Thanks again.

I've heard lots of good things about the honors program, my son didn't do it so its nor first hand knowledge, but I have heard from parents who were very happy with the additional stuff you get to do. As for dorms I don't know why anyone would say that. You can walk from one side of the campus to the other in 15 minutes or so, which is pretty good for a big school. What really matters is where your classes are, which is usually in the middle somewhere. Plus don't they put the Honors kids in an Honors dorm decently close to their classes? After the first year though kids can live where they want. They can either select a specific dorm, or live off campus (which is usually an apartment across Guadalupe Street. Most kids do this, which adds to the walk (so again I don't get the complaint about distance since most upper classmen choose a longer walk anyway so it can't be bad). Plus this is where a lot of the college bars/restaurants are. So if you don't go downtown you hang out around Guadalupe.
Thanks, the information in your posts is worth it’s weight in gold. I think I need to visit the campus. She applied there on a whim, along with most of the other elite public universities, but I am sort of stunned at the depth of the positive feedback about UT.

In the Honors program, the Computer Science, Engineering, or Moody's (business college), kids are heavily recruited for jobs by companies. I have never seen anything like it. For accounting which I have experience with, all of the Big 4 came on campus numerous times. One even rented out the football stadium for an event, another had a dinner downtown at a fancy restaurant. My daughter went to a small state school in Texas and had to claw and beg to get interviews. At UT these companies are throwing jobs at kids from the top programs.

My son was employed before he graduated, so were all his friends. He had a great "paid" internship his senior year (he went 5 years to get his Masters) which was awesome. That alone was worth everything as a parent. Plus the tuition is cheap for instate, and still ok I believe for out of state. Knowing your kid has a choice of jobs upon graduation is great.
Plus burnt orange is a cool color for polo shirts and other "dad" clothing. Of course you'll need to learn to say Hook-em and show the longhorn symbol with your hand.
Yeah my buddy is from there said the same thing. Austin has become a complete caricuture of itself. Similar has happened to Asheville, and look out for St. Pete to be on the list. I have no idea how the roads are going to handle the incoming traffic boom over the next ten years.
I would never take the advice of an F&M Dip on anything ....
Heat is no big deal except In the summers when school is out

If I could do it all over, it would be a top pick for me.

Damn, when I saw that you posted, I was hoping for a Texas inspired recipe!
Austin is facing the same challenges all growing cities face -- infrastructure challenges, cultural changes, economic changes. But the city most certainly isn't a caractere. That's a lazy and silly assertion.
UT is a great school, and the central Texas area is at the vanguard of growth.
Jim...reading your first post I thought you were going to be going to UT...my bad
While I dont live in Austin...I get there as often as I can. I have been in Texas for about 6 years now...and I have always been impressed with Austin...
South Congress Ave (SoCo) is an amazing area...I wish it was in my backyard...

Yo brother! Anytime you are in Austin my home is your home. Great memories of you, Paulie, Manny in CA, Bona, Wild Bill in the candlestick lot.
I never thought in 100 years I would last more than three months in The Lone Star State...
I fell in love with Texas...dare I say I’m finished with California?
Always an honor to share a beer with you and your Father...and next time I am in Austin dinner is on me

I'm afraid my Chili is my lone Texas inspired dish.
But I can dish out advice; while in Texas, order the beef ribs (or brisket.)
In the voice of the waiter from My Dinner with Andre.
It's an original "public ivy" school, with world class scholars.
IMHO, you get used to the heat and how to adjust. Austin is a great town. Definitely getting built up very quickly, but there is a good bus system which is free for students. I'd often bike and bus. Easy.
I was married and had kids, so I wasn't very active in nightlife and all that, but there's a lot of it, tons of music and bars and all that. And there's something in the water in Texas. The person who mentioned that the women are pretty was right. I was happily married and not a creep, so I just noticed it and moved on, but it seems to be true.
