podcast last night (he's back after a health scare and he sold his scouting company) is that the Panthers might make a move to sign Rivers for one or two years as a stopgap (he played at NC State). But the ultimate plan really is to tank it in 2020 for Trevor Lawrence in 2021. With Tepper and Rhule in place, they have a plan and it could be similar to the Cowboys tanking in 1989 with Jimmy Johnson.

That’s a dangerous game. They are going to have plenty of teams tanking for Lawrence and most of them have far less talent than Carolina
most teams' "exam" will just be tossing a ball on the ground to see if he goes for it or jumps back like an elephant from a mouse. Magic 8 Ball isn't optimistic.
and if Tepper is on board with that, he's going to have built in leeway. The bigger issue with that strategy is what happens when you don't get Lawrence? That's a fuckton of eggs to put in 1 basket.

How does signing Rivers for a year or two help with tanking 2020?
as Newton was out for the remainder of the games, the Panthers were moving away from him. The only question is whether cam plays again or retires. I think he'll retire
I thought Olsen would retire and he didn't, so I'm probably going to be wrong here too.
I refuse ot beleive any owner would allow this to happen. I know
teams will do anything win,but losing intentionally is beyond the pale. How would a team tank, put unprepared players on the field and risk them getting injured or worse? How about a coach that did that, would they ever get another job? No, I don't see tanking as option!
Dallas tank with Jimmy Johnson or were they extremely fortuitous to pull off a mind-numbing trade with the Vikings??
The actual tank jobs you can point to in the NFL aren't that numerous and those teams that have a really terrible season usually need something extraordinary to intervene to make them immediately competitve.

Dallas didn't tank they drafted Aikman #1 in 89. They played a team of very young players, getting rid of all of the last connections to Tom Landry. They then traded Walker in Oct of 89 for a TON of picks...
It he won’t be all season. He’s also never worked on being a great QB. A bigger more polished Michael Vick. He’s not carrying a team. Carolina isn’t winning him. His window is shut. Maybe nailed shut at this point

How does signing Rivers for a year or two help with tanking 2020?
Why not just make a play for Burrow this year. Does Brady think Lawerence is that much better?
you would think McCaffery being ready to get a big contract should stop them from esentially giving up on 2 years.
Rhule has got the contract to allow him a couple years to tesr it down so we will see how it plays out.
unknowns about Tepper is his patience level. He says all the right things about building a program and that taking time, but there have been a lot of cases of guys who are successful in the outside world who expect that success to translate to the NFL and that it can be achieved quickly.
With a new staff in place and a likely low finish, we'll see how he handles that situation.

So, the Panthers tank this year and suck. They draft Lawrence who plays pretty well in year one but the Panthers go something like 6-10 or 7-9?
Rhule is feeling heat at that point, no question.
How does signing Rivers for a year or two help with tanking 2020?
Maybe draft some guy in the 7th round or bring in Colt McCoy to tank...but Rivers can win some games with that team.
Agree completely.
This. For any team.

Carolina will have competition for being the worst team in the NFL in 2020.
