Mel Kiper mock draft 2.0: An unexpected twist of fate

Steve in ATL : 2/19/2020 7:47 pm
for the Giants

Not sure that it would take a twist of fate. I think there is a reasonable chance to Okudah will be there a 4. Would love to get him. Hope that draft falls this way.

1 - Burrow
2 - Young
3 - Tagovailoa

I'm thinking that the recent info that detroit is shopping Slay...
Torrag : 2/19/2020 7:53 pm : link
makes this scenario unlikely. If they stay at #3 Okudah is the odds on favorite. The path to a QB going in that slot is the lions trading out.
Not sure why that is a twist if fate.
robbieballs2003 : 2/19/2020 7:54 pm : link
Okudah is the worst case scenario for me and I am a big fan of his meaning I like all of our situations. If he and Young go then we still have plenty of options like OT, Simmons, and a trade down with the trade down being my preferred option (assuming we get good value and still get a great player by only moving down a few spots).
Kiper

When has he been right on the money?? Let’s wait until the combine.
Young
Paulie Walnuts : 2/19/2020 11:19 pm : link
or Simmons Please
Klaatu's going to bust a few balloons over this.

No OT in the 1st? No trade down?

No non non!
Jedrick Wills
Joey in VA : 2/20/2020 7:36 am : link
Or death! Unless QB goes 1-3 and Young is there, Wills has to be the pick.
Umm
mdthedream : 2/20/2020 7:38 am : link
no one is ever on the money. I think that is pretty much how it goes. I think there will be trade ups.

Wills would be a tremendous reach in that scenario.

I cant fathom believing that taking the best player on the board, at a premium position is "worst case scenario".

As for the trade down, if a great offer is there and it happens, fine, great. The thing is we go through this every year, every year is "the year" we need to trade down. It's mostly fanboy crap. More is not always better.

It's difficult to turn down a lockdown corner when your defense is among the worst in the league.

Kiper ihas become a joke ...
Spider56 : 2/20/2020 8:49 am : link
He essentially invented an industry and made a ton of money ... but now he’s an afterthought ... and a pompous one too.

Naahh. I don't get too worked up over mock drafts, least of all Mel Kiper's.

Baloney.

I don't know what Ed Valentine was looking at, because this is Benjamin Solak's 2020 NFL Draft Big Board over at The Draft Network, dated February 15, and you can see that he has Wills ranked #4, Simmons #6, and Okudah #8. So, not reach at all, let alone a "tremendous reach."

My good friend Joey is absolutely right.
Need to wait on combine or Pro Day
Bob in Newburgh : 2/20/2020 9:42 am : link
Wills will either clearly be an elite LT prospect easily worth the #4 without a lot of grousing, or he will one of a bunch of OTs who are value in 1st, but not top 5.

Should be an easy pick for us if the first scenario holds.
Why everyone thinks Detroit is the trade up spot
90.Cal : 2/20/2020 9:54 am : link
and not us makes no sense to me. We are 1 pick ahead of Miami. Fins could/should stay put at 5, they need to use the picks, they need players everywhere. Someone like the Chargers or the Panthers could want to jump them for a QB.

We could make the Chargers pay us their 2nd round pick for moving up 2 spots. Or Carolina. Would probably still be able to land a starting OT or 1 of Okudah/Simmons maybe.

Because if, say, the Chargers get ready to trade with us for 4, then Carolina can trade with Detroit for 3. Or Miami can. And if someone jumps to 3, then the Chargers won't have to make the deal with us. I still don't think 3 QBs are going in the top 4 or 5. Teams know we aren't taking a QB. It is highly doubtful in spite of Stafford's wife's tweets Detroit is taking a QB.

Just look to two years ago when everyone thought 4 QBs would go in the top 6 and teams would be falling all over themselves to trade up. The Jets moved up to 3 more than a month before the draft, then the Bills moved from 12 to 7. The Bills were so desperate for a QB they let 3 teams pick before they moved to get Allen, including Denver, who was desperate for a QB. I'm guessing one team moves to 3, then the rest wait it out.

And how do you know Wills "will be a tremendous reach"?

It's your opinion I bet, and probably not very well researched or informed.

But you don't even write IMO to acknowledge that.

Not cool.
Let's say we go Wills...

When the 2nd pick is up and these guys are available, who do you like?

Weaver
Gross-Matos
Baun
Ruiz

I really don't know enough about Weaver or Ruiz, but between Baun and Gross-Matos would take either, but prefer Baun by some margin.

Let's see their athletic #s after the combine, but Baun plays like an athletic freak.

If they go Ruiz I assume our OL is...

Solder - Hernandez- Ruiz - Zeitler - Wills

Hopefully that would make it "fixed". And then hopefully they went nuts in FA on the defense...

Maybe you should check this out on Wills.

Almost an hour of unbiased (it seems) tape and commentary.

A lot to like in Wills. Great feet especially kick slide, or whatever you call pass pro set up.

Our pick has way more value than to just take a guy
since1925 : 2/20/2020 12:14 pm : link
It could be turned into two first rounders or a first round and two second rounders.

With the deep OT (large need) class and a number of Edges, LBs and DBs, (all needs) this could be an amazing draft year.

Mayock "broke" the news the Giants were drafting Pugh, he had his ears to the ground unlike Kiper.

Once. When the Giants took Clint Sintim he trashed the pick.

He also graded Ewreck Flowers as a late 1st round project.

short lease : 2/20/2020 7:04 pm : link

"And after the Giants cut Janoris Jenkins in December, cornerback surged to the top of the team’s needs."

So is a LT. I want an OL like Dallas dammit ..... but, would not have a problem with Oakadoke.

He also trashed the Flowers pick.
I'm officially off the Simmons train
PatersonPlank : 2/21/2020 11:41 am : link
IMO, I just don't see him as physical enough to play near the line and I don't think he's agile or mobile enough to play safety. I see him as a real tweener guy, and someone you'd have to alter a defense around to accommodate.
