Late August, gonna be hot. Me, wife, and 2 kids....19 and 21. I am not a huge gambler, and my wife just won't do it....I need thoughts, opinions, recommendation, etc
if I somehow wound up with a week in Vegas and I didn't gamble I would spend one day in Vegas at most, maybe go to one of those gun ranges where you can shoot unique firearms Hoover dam if you've never been, maybe Red Rock Canyon and then rent an RV and tour some of the scenic national parks.
It's like 11 hours from Vegas to Yellowstone then maybe Grand Teton, down to Bryce then to Grand Canyon, then back to Vegas.
A week in Vegas is a long time so your going to want to see the attractions. Grand canyon, Red Rock, Lake Mead Etc...The one problem you may have is the Heat. It's really really hot in August. And if you drive about make sure to put at least 6 gallons or more of water in the trunk in case you break down. Not a joke..
I agree with Absinthe, but I don't think you need the VIP seats. I saw 4th round with the standard tickets that I got on plum benefits from my work and that was more than good enough. The theater is really small. The first row you'll get made fun of a lot and be the brunt of the jokes.
It's not for the easily offended though. It's very raunchy and dirty, which should be fine for a 19 year old but they don't hold back at all, so be prepared.
Outside of that;
- Go check out Old Vegas - even with kids there is some stuff to do
- See shows (Cirque Du Solei Beatles Love is also amazing)
- Eat. There are a million fantastic restaurants in Vegas.
Having a kid under 21 is tough. You'll see live music playing and you won't even be allowed in the area because you have someone under 21.

a week in Vegas gambling once and it felt like 3 months had passed.
That being said Vegas is just as much about entertainment as it is about gambling these days. There are 1000 different shows and a lot of excellent restaurants. My advise is take in some shows and eat some world class food. Head up to Fremont Street, do the zip line. Day trip to the Grand Canyon is worth it if youve never seen it before. They also do helicopter rides to the canyon and that is pretty cool. Vegas is a great town with a lot to do. Go have fun.

Excuse me, 4th row***
Can't believe y'all brought this up. I saw Absinthe last Tuesday in Vegas. Was with a group for a conference and had no idea what to expect. I would definitely call it unique. The raunch factor was pretty high level. Saw a handful of folks get up and leave. The acrobatic element was pretty awesome...the rest was meh, IMO.
We also went to Aerosmith at the Park Theater. Been wanting to see them for a long time. I'm afraid, though, that I should've done so about 10 years ago.
Fun and authentic place to stop on the way to Red Rock or other excursion. Family of four can eat like kings for less than $40. Worth the long wait. Best tacos I’ve had in the US. (My no. 1 all-time is still El Fogon in Playa Del Carmen).
Especially if you are staying on the strip. Whatever you do, make sure where ever you are staying has a nice pool!
As most have mentioned, you can plan day trips to Hoover Dam. Have dinner one night at the Voodoo lounge at the top of Rio. If you don't want to do the Voodoo lounge, you can go to the Strat (space needle). You can hit up Top Golf (back of the MGM).
There is definitely plenty to do, but after a few days it will seem like ground hog day in Vegas.
in Vegas, but as other have said a week is an eternity there. I'm going in a couple weeks for 3 concerts and that seems like too much.
Anyway, they have many great restaurants(not all ridculously pricey) the neon museum, the mob museum downtown, obviously lots of shows. Also, stay hydrated especially if walking the strip in August.
Main advice if you actually plan on staying in Vegas for the full week, don't let the many things to do overwhelm you.

I saw Absinthe. It was a lot of fun. Bring seat cushions.
I took a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon--Half a day. It was fantastic--memorable.
A Grand Canyon bus tour is an all day affair with a very long drive because the roads are circuitous.
You can hit traffic going to Red Rock Canyon, but it's a nice drive. Take a picnic lunch.
I took the Hoover Dam tour 40 years ago. I liked it then. I don't think it has changed much, except for the building of the Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.
I found the buffets expensive and disappointing.
My room at Treasure Island was excellent and inexpensive.
Walk along the Strip and see the lights, the volcano at the Mirage, the water fountains, etc. Get your picture taken (for a fee) with women dressed up like chorus girls.
I would recommend staying at the Strip rather than Downtown.
I've went to Vegas in August before for a week. Hot hot hot but
enjoyed it. I actually won the trip. I rented a car and went to the Grand Canyon ( make sure you go to the good side which is a longer drive). Saw Hoover Dam. Went to shows (there are many from comedians to you name it) The woman will love it. There is plenty to do. My wife and I aren't big gamblers but we'll spend a little time on the slots. For your wife get her on the penny slots she won't lose much money and will probably love them. You can also just relax by the pool and swim before the sun gets too intense. The water is like bath water LOL that time of year. Plenty to do in air conditioned hotels and museums. Check out the hotels your not staying at. Ride the Gondola's at the Ventian Hotel.
Believe me you'll find things to do but by the seventh day you'll be ready to come home. I've been to Vegas several times. Ironically one of the wife's favorite vacation spots but not in August. But don't let the heat spoil it for you, it didn't for me.
and a week in Vegas is an eternity. After 4 days, I'm ready to come home.
Things to do with the family will mostly require a car:
- Go to Red Rocks
- Go to the Hoover Dam
- Go to the Edge of the Grand Canyon
- Go to Old Downtown
Basically along the strip, you might as well find a place with a good pool. Lots of restaurants to choose from and shows. For the shows, go to the discount ticket booths. Don't pay face value.
Vegas really isn't an ideal place for the 19 year old.

I'd rent a car and make some short day trips or even overnights.
Maybe hit up the grand canyon which isn't a bad drive from Vegas. Maybe even LA for day.
It's like 11 hours from Vegas to Yellowstone then maybe Grand Teton, down to Bryce then to Grand Canyon, then back to Vegas.
May need a little more than a week though.
However, during August those might be tough chores. I went in May one year and they actually closed Lake Mead due to the heat.

Good Luck

Mets are no longer in Vegas. But I think there is a minor league team there.

So Cal is 4-5 hours away, I would drive there for a few days, if you're hell bent on doing Vegas.
A week is too much time. Shows are at night, the sun is blazing during the day, you'll end up killing time in your hotel room.

Park Theater is a great venue
Plenty of food spots which is a whole different thread. Wine tasting venues.
Hit up a hockey or minor league baseball game. Golf although a bit off blvd.
A few visits to the pool is always a scene doing people watching with a few cocktails.
