Redskins could take a QB

Jon C. in MD : 2/21/2020 8:14 pm
I wouldn’t get too comfortable with the notion that the Redskins won’t take a QB. The old coaching staff had only lukewarm things to say about Haskins. Even after Gruden was fired, you couldn’t get a strong positive comment from any of Callahan’s staff. Rivera, who gameplanned against Haskins when he was the Panther’s coach, hasn’t expressed any confidence in him. Doug Williams could barely come up with a nice word to say about him recently. I am convinced that if it was totally up to the football people in the building, they would take a QB at #2. The big question is Dan Snyder. Will he get out of the way? Or will he force his new staff to stick with the QB that he loves?

They probably take Chase Young. But I only put that “probably” at about 60% - 70%. Don’t be shocked if Tua goes #2.

Then what would Detroit do? What would the Giants do? Will they be prepared for the surprise, or will they panic and make a bad trade or pick?
Two things...
bw in dc : 2/21/2020 8:26 pm : link
1. I've never been more ecstatic about not drafting Haskins.

2. With his lower body injury history, you have to be insane to draft Tua anywhere in the top 20.

doubt the Redskins take anyone but Young, but if they did take a QB we'd be in a great position. Young would then likely be taken by Detroit, and we could trade with someone who wanted Herbert. Of course, the Redskins might take Herbert, but then someone would likely want Tua.
I doubt it happens...
Chris in Philly : 2/21/2020 8:35 pm : link
but if we can walk away with either Young or Okudah, I say thank you and go on with my day...

all the hand wringing about Detroit being in the driver's seat the thing is the Giants will be left with at least one of 3 very good options no matter what Washington or Detroit do.

1. Take Young
2. Take Okudah
3. Trade out with a QB hungry team that wants Herbert and/or Tua. Then grab an OT and get an extra pick.

Would I rather they were sitting at 2 or 3? Of course, but 4 isnt a bad spot to be

Not happening. Rivera and Snyder are both smitten with Young
The_Boss : 2/21/2020 8:49 pm : link
Check Dawg’s Thursday reading thread. Here’s what was posted yesterday. I know I know. Some will say smokescreen. Not with the best player in this draft.

“Not only does Ron Rivera love Chase Young, but owner Daniel Snyder wants Young to wind up DC. It seems unanimous the owner and the coach are on the same page on drafting Young at this point.”
What has Rivera said about Haskins

Rivera is a defensive minded HC...

I would be totally shocked if it's not Young.
Interesting....

To be honest, I thought I saw a lot of improvement in Haskins as the season went on. I liked him pre-draft-he was the only QB I wanted the Giants to even consider at 6 with Murray gone. I think you are pronouncing him a lost cause WAY too early.
Definitely

He has been non- committal. Said he would have to compete with any other QB on the roster for the job. From what I’m hearing here in Ashburn, where I live, is a QB is very much in play. But most likely only if Burrow is there. Rivera is being given more control by Snyder then any coach since Gibbs. Supposedly.

Pencil in Young at 2 to the Skins. This is lying season at the end of the day, but this is about as a sure a thing as you can get.
Zero chance Snyder lets his staff show him up
BillT : 2/21/2020 11:13 pm : link
Everyone know Haskins was Snyder's pick. Everyone knows his staff wanted someone else. Why would he let this staff override him when he didn't let his last staff override him.

It’s like some of these guys are so delusional they will hold out hope that Young somehow someway makes it to 4. There is no shot that happens. Absolutely no shot. But these guys won’t believe it until they see Young bear hugging Goodell on the stage holding his #1 Redskin jersey.

No chance this happens. Snyder vetoed Gruden who preferred Daniel Jones and hand picked Haskins. They won't pass on Young to take another QB.

Gruden did not favor any QB. He didn’t want a QB. He knew his job was on the line and wanted to win NOW.

However, he absolutely did not want Haskins.

He knew Danny Boy was drafting a QB and he tried to steer the decision to Jones. He may not have wanted a QB but he was going to get one and he definitely had a preference.

Haskins went to

Snyder's kid' high school. Danny has been smitten with him for awhile now
Moreover:
FStubbs : 2/22/2020 7:56 am : link
I'm fairly sure Young being a local guy will add points for Snyder. And there's no way he passes up on a potential superstar. This is about as solid a lock as you can get.

They're going to ride Haskins, and Alex Smith will be the veteran backup, as he will likely be ready to go next season.

Yup, he may not be the most loyal cat, but in this case, I can see Snyder being stubborn and not select the better QB.
The Giants might not have a shot at drafting Young,
fivehead : 2/22/2020 8:34 am : link
but at least they got those very important and exciting wins at the end of the season.
If Tua is that good
mdthedream : 2/22/2020 8:42 am : link
the Redskins should consider taking him. That said if they are going to do it than they should see if anyone is interested in Haskins in a trade.

No. I was one win that sunk all hopes for Chase Young. Not multiple.
Haskins is an "arm talent"...
M.S. : 2/22/2020 9:23 am : link

...but it remains to be seen whether or not he puts it all together as an effective QB overall.

Daniel Jones does not have Haskins' arm talent, but after onbe season he seems to have a higher ceiling as a better all-around QB.

with Haskins. They need a QB.
Not that the scenario is likely
fkap : 2/22/2020 11:00 am : link
but if it does happen, how does having a great non-QB drop to #4 cause panic?

There's really a limited set of scenarios for Detroit or NY to consider. You think they're not scouting Young or Okudah just because they may or may not be around by pick 4?
LOL literally NO chance
Saquads26 : 2/22/2020 11:26 am : link
Snyder is not quitting on Haskins and admitting his mistake after one year. Not should he. Get real.

Do not think the Skins have given up on Haskins yet and

will not pass on the best player in the draft who is not a QB. We will take who is left on defense or trade up for more picks. But DG has never traded up in the first round so it is still a mystery.
If the rumors are true that Haskins was the pick
Mike from Ohio : 2/22/2020 3:48 pm : link
because Snyder wanted him, then there is a 0.0% chance he let's the pick another QB at #2 this year.

Yes, there is a chance they take a QB at #2. I think it is less than 1%.

No. And it's not actually a fact.

Gruden supposedly did favor Jones over Haskins, but that may have had as much value as Belichick having a preference in QB prospects with Brady on the roster. Preferring one prospect to another at a particular position is not the same as "knew he was going to get one of these two guys and preferred this one."

Will only speak in first person without pronouns. Will expect you to accept that. Do not have any real insight. Will expect you to accept that too.

Will also confuse trade up with trade down. Will claim that DG has never traded up in the first round when DG traded up INTO the first round last year. Will not offer any sort of reply to this post.
