NFT: Question on the Astro's scandal (pitchers vs batters)..

1st and 10 : 2/23/2020 8:25 am
I understand how the Astro's stole the signs (banging and allegedly buzzers) and all of that, which greatly helped out their batters.

I have not read how the Astro's cheated and helped their pitching staff.

Any help in understanding this would be appreciated.
The smoke there has been

the rapid rise in spin rates on their pitches. How that happens I have no idea but there was an extreme uptick in recent years. Cole is also really good and Verlander was a dominant pitcher in the past so it’s possible it was good old fashioned hard work but I’m still skeptical.
Yeah the spin rate thing is

interesting. But the Yankees have been utilizing spin rates for the past couple years in instructing pitchers and in who the pursue.
Probably grip pressures and finger placement on the seams.
The spin rate stuff

comes from the idea that the Astros have been using some concoction of rosin, pine tar, etc that is available and more or less utilizing it. Kind of a MacGiver version of doctoring the baseball which has been going on forever.

The Astros mantra has been taking cheating to a new level and part of the systemic way they do things.

However, the spin rate stuff and doctoring balls in fact does go on across most of baseball, that's why there hasn't been as much blowback on them (other than Bauer calling it out). I think it's kind of acknowledged that pitchers do this to help grip the ball better for better control. And batters, who stand in against 98 mph fastballs appreciate that a pitcher can control it and not drill them. But again, the Astros seem to have taken it up a higher notch however, as I said, most of the unwritten rules kind of look the other way.

The system to know what pitch is coming however, that was complete crap. It has been described as if you were talking about the speed limit. Every team looks for a way to get the signs and some stuff with the apple watches would be considered going 5-10 mph over the speed limit. The Astros went about 75 mph over it in a school zone.

Yup. I always go back back to the astros demeanor throughout this thing. If I was an astros player getting accused of this shit and I knew I was innocent? I’d be screaming from the rooftops. I’d never shut up. These guys are so guilty. Barely even defending themselves but never admitting guilt. Fuck em.
The batters cheating helped the pitchers

By scoring runs, giving them a lead and some breathing room. I'd imagine it's a lot easier to pitch with a lead or at least knowing your O is good for a bunch of runs.

There's less pressure on pitchers when they have a really good O, and the sign stealing/cheating made having a good O easier, which in turn benefitted everyone.

Had a rejuvenation there. At the time there was talk of the Astros pitching coaches doing something different than everyone else. Could be something could be nothing.
