Dave Gettleman on if #Giants don’t sign Leonard Williams: I’ll get killed #NYGiants
Leonard has Dave by the balls. And Dave knows it.
He's just stating the obvious. It doesn't mean he will re-sign him, only that if he doesn't, he will get slammed for it. That's not telling the agent anything he doesn't already know.
If worse comes to worse, they can allow him to field offers in free agency with the understanding that he will give the Giants an opportunity to match any offer. Ultimately, that would be the best case scenario (assuming he returns) because it would mean giving up a 5th round pick in 2021 instead of a 4th round pick.

I don't get that impression at all from DG. I love where Judge is coming from, but think DG is just doesn't really want to disclose too much while at the same time, he's pretty frank about certain things. You just don't agree with his methods, but that doesn't make him a buffoon.
Why do I even bother.. go ahead and think what you want lol
"I’ve got thick rhino hyde" is disingenuous. Basically he was sending the opposite message to the agent than what is suggested. He's saying "Yeah we all know that I'll be slammed by the media and fans if he isn't re-signed, but that won't influence the pricetag."
And Gettleman's history has shown that he is not one to let good money chase bad money even if it makes his past decisions look bad.
If I never another word DG said again I would be fine with that.
I actually prefer Gettleman's. At least with Gettleman you get a sense of what's important to him. With Judge it's all just coachspeak cliches. +1
Some people (fans and media alike) strangely think they’re entitled to a detailed description of the Giants plans for the roster, draft or free agent strategy, offensive/defensive scheme strategy, and act like babies when they don’t get it.
Anyone who thinks Judge hasn’t consistently given insightful media comments should go listen to a sampling of Belichick pressers for comparison.
more overreaction. Also, the entire quote is pretty important. If he doesn't sign, he'll get killed by the media and fans, which is entirely true, he already has been. He has thick skin, meaning that if he doesn't get signed and the media kills him, it won't affect him much. That comment won't affect contract negotiation at all.

Asked why it was so important to add teachers to the coaching roster, Joe Judge says “We don’t have cheerleaders in the Giants organization, from what I understand... it was important not to add them in the coaching office either”
Holy shit, now THAT is a quote.
Unless this guy is an utter moron at calling a game, I think he'll do wonders for this team.
but I don't really care what Judge has to say. Not really sure I care what Gettleman says either. For the past 4 years, 3(now 4) different head coaches, 2 GM's and 2 Owners have all 'said the right things', with the same crappy results. I'll be slightly excited to see the FA's that we sign and i'll follow the draft, but I can't remember an offseason where I was less excited about the words coming out of the FO or what the media has to say. I look to some decent insight on this website for things not covered in the MSM and I have been following the coaching hires loosely. I still worry that Judge was an after thought when we missed out on Rivera(not that we were ever in it) and Rhule (not that I was ever a huge fan but got the impression he was the Giants first choice). I like what he has said, but then again words are cheap. I look forward to September and a better than .500 season.
imo, the comment means nothing in the negotiation land.
Could mean: "So what? Ill have to handle it. Media comments don't bother me'
Could mean: I know he doesn't want to be franchised
Could mean: If he asks too much Ill get roasted but the NYG wont bend past a point
Could mean: I know you assholes would love it
Highly unlikely it means much at all in the negotiations.
Its a throw away line. imo
Red meat for the irrational to gyrate
This is all mostly true, but it leaves out the most important point, IMO: it wasn't necessary to say at all. Even if it hands over absolutely no negotiating leverage to LW's agent, it certainly doesn't help DG's position at all.
He doesn't have to talk so much. He just makes things harder on himself in the process.
RE: Guys who hate DG will seize on this comment but
We totally agree that if Hanlon got this guy to be a sphinx he and the NYG would be better off.
I don't think our media allows that. For them getting DG talking is always sure to generate hot takes and easy derision.
The NYG should pay Jeter through the nose to come up and give a seminar at being in front of cameras 200 plus times a year and saying absolutely nothing for 20 years.
Not directed at you specifically, but I would say your reaction of "No shit Sherlock, tell me something I don't know" indicates you're not necessarily neutral on the matter. ;-)
That's just my reaction to the fans who think they've gleaned something from what he's said. I completely understand the strategy of speaking in cliches and giving out zero information. And I think it's especially important for a coach who is inexperienced at dealing with the media. Gettleman gets himself into trouble not because he says things that reveal his thinking, but because he hands out enough scraps that people think they know what he's thinking and then they run with their interpretation of it. A perfect example of it is when he said he "didn't sign OBJ in order to trade him." That was absolutely true when he signed the extension in 2018, but had no bearing on 2019 given all the shit that subsequently went down. For some reason, people felt they had been lied to, but he was merely stating a fact. And you still see reporters bringing up that quote as evidence that he's a liar.
RE: RE: Judge and DG have two very different styles

You don't get a sense of what's important to Judge that's a bit different from how other coaches frame it?
He's emphasized two things in such a way that I seldom see: teaching, and holding his coaching staff accountable for the lack thereof.
If I'm a player, I love it. He's delivering the message in the exact right way. He's not implying that the players themselves don't have work to do or won't be accountable, but he's also not likely to blindly align himself with the position coaches.
imo, the comment means nothing in the negotiation land.

Absolutely right.
It’s lip service people. Since when does DG give a fuck about being roasted? He drafted Daniel jones last year knowing full well it was going to set off a wide spread nuclear response. He even said “no guts no glory.”
What DG says in a friggin presser has absolutely no impact on contract negotiations. Cmon people. The guy just got over cancer. He’s closing in on 70. He’s seen and done everything in the nfl for decades. Based on DG’e aura, disposition, history, you name it, I don’t think the guy gives two fucks whether he’s vilified in the media. He’s going to do what he wants to do. He isn’t going to sign Williams simply because he’s scared of getting killed. And Williams has as much leverage as he’s getting based on what other teams MIGHT pay him. Money talks bullshit walks. You get paid based on how good the league perceives you to be.
See what you want. Get mad at what you want. It’s all bullshit.

Leonard has Dave by the balls. And Dave knows it.

FFS. Everyone clamoring for DG to talk more? Good Lord. Way to negotiate against yourself moron.
Seriously. Buffoon. I have a feeling we will be seeing a Joe Douglas scenario after the draft with Old Yeller.

Dave Gettleman understands the impression if they don’t re-sign Leonard Williams. “I’ll get killed. I’ve got thick rhino hyde.”
Its a throw away line. imo

There you have it -- actual context. But I'm sure that won't prevent more whining on this thread about how Gettleman has given away any negotiation leverage.
Now if you want to blast him once again for doing the Williams deal in the first place, on the other hand...

Joe Judge has still not publicly mentioned a single Giants players name since being hired. Truly a remarkable accomplishment.

He really is a caricature at this point. But he does provide great material...his public events are must watch.

That Joe Judge said everything meaningful he's ever gonna say in his opening press conference. And everything else is just gonna be reiterating that same stuff.
Think what you will about DG as a GM but he's usually at least entertaining, and informative within the context of what info he'll discuss.
Yeah, im going to completely disagree. Judge has a plan and a message and stays on point. Gettleman comes off as a babbling, stammering buffoon who speaks in superlatives and has no idea what he is doing. Give me Judge all day every day.

Judge said they won’t sign older players just to teach younger players. That’s the coaches’ job.
He better tell that to Gettleman.
And Gettleman's history has shown that he is not one to let good money chase bad money even if it makes his past decisions look bad.

Giants GM Dave Gettleman on the possibility of trading back from No. 4: “We’re open for business.”
Must be a misquote because I have repeatedly on BBI that DG refuses to even consider trading down.
And Gettleman's history has shown that he is not one to let good money chase bad money even if it makes his past decisions look bad.
Totally agree...very misleading reporting

Not being obtuse and I like Judge, but what are you hearing?
Blank slate. Has yet to call a player by name. You, meaning the player, haven’t earned anything with this coaching staff.
DG saying they are open for business at the 4 pick, especially.

Gettleman on Nate Solder: “Like Joe said, everybody’s got a blank slate and everybody’s competing.”
The "blank slate" approach is fine, but you also have to make good business decisions as well. I hope they don't take this approach on players who, if cut, could save the Giants a significant amount of cap space. Guys like Kareem Martin or Alec Ogletree should not be on this team anymore.
Reading between the lines JJ said expicitly that they won't be bringing in older players to teach the youngsters; that's the coaches job.
You might conclude that if the reason you were hired in the first place was to "give a veteran presence" you may be on shaky ground.

Music to my ears. I hate the idea of a washed up vet being signed just to mentor a younger player. Coaches coach, and players play. Let the coaches earn their paycheck.
Bad news for Alex Tanney.

I suspect blank slate means no preconceived notions. That doesn't mean they aren't using game and practice tape to evaluate current players now.

Really needs a perspective check. His job isn't giving the media and fans amazingly new and fresh insights every time he speaks. His job is to create a winning team.
Not sure if that was directed at me or not. I have no problem with Judge's approach to talking to the media, it just means the interview is of no value to me because I learn nothing from it.
Not directed at you specifically, but I would say your reaction of "No shit Sherlock, tell me something I don't know" indicates you're not necessarily neutral on the matter. ;-)
+1
Some people (fans and media alike) strangely think they’re entitled to a detailed description of the Giants plans for the roster, draft or free agent strategy, offensive/defensive scheme strategy, and act like babies when they don’t get it.
Anyone who thinks Judge hasn’t consistently given insightful media comments should go listen to a sampling of Belichick pressers for comparison.
these are the same posters that had mental mental downs because our fat lb coach had an interview set up.

I take this to mean that they will try to sign Williams and if that cannot reach agreement then the Giants will tag him.
I don't think our media allows that. For them getting DG talking is always sure to generate hot takes and easy derision.
The NYG should pay Jeter through the nose to come up and give a seminar at being in front of cameras 200 plus times a year and saying absolutely nothing for 20 years.

That's some negotiating tactic. "If I don't buy this car, my wife will kill me so give you the best deal." Holy cow.
Did Gettleman actually say that??
Would you be surprised? That's, like, the most Gettlemany thing to say, ever.

I actually prefer Gettleman's. At least with Gettleman you get a sense of what's important to him. With Judge it's all just coachspeak cliches. He wants tough, smart, fundamentally sound players who put the team first. No shit, Sherlock. I want a rich, young woman with big tits and an oral addiction. Did I just tell you something you didn't already know???
You don't get a sense of what's important to Judge that's a bit different from how other coaches frame it?
He's emphasized two things in such a way that I seldom see: teaching, and holding his coaching staff accountable for the lack thereof.
If I'm a player, I love it. He's delivering the message in the exact right way. He's not implying that the players themselves don't have work to do or won't be accountable, but he's also not likely to blindly align himself with the position coaches.
