Considering he was feeling this pain at the end of last season I think it's fair to say the Yanks medical staff completely misdiagnosed this in October. He still would have been out all this year if he'd had TJS then, but he might have been ready to start the 2021 season. Now he'll likely miss at least half that season as well.
Needless to say this puts an ENORMOUS dent in the Yanks chances of winning a championship this year.
@spotrac
Luis Severino signed a 4 year $40M extension with the #Yankees almost exactly a year ago. He’s pitched 12 innings since, & is headed for Tommy John surgery according to GM Brian Cashman. He has $31.25M left on the deal, plus a $15M club option in 2023.
Cole was brought in to be the legit ace Sevy has never quite been. Masa and Paxton are a solid 2/3. It was wise of them to hold onto Happ. Yankees are still loaded.
Cole - Tanaka - Paxton is still incredible. Boone's gotta make sure they all get there as healthy and rested as possible.
Tough loss.
I wouldn't bank of both Tanaka and Paxton being healthy at the end, but if they are that has got to be the top 1-3 in the AL, unless a #3 emerges for the Astros. Regardless, Astros are much weaker after having lost Cole, and the distraction this season will be. Saving grace for the Yankees is that the AL is looking pretty weak this year.
you can feel that one coming. Yankees need Monty to hold down the fort for a while and wait for German to come back (I was skeptical if he would after the suspension but I bet the Yankees will wait it out for his return).
I would expect that Yankees will cash in trade chips for a starter as we get closer to the deadline.
feels like the word Malpractice is going to be thrown around
We are stacked and have the resources both financially and organizational depth wise to do what it takes. Thankfully we signed Cole. Watching the game last Saturday Kenny said when he asked Boone what stuck out to him about the team this spring Booney said he's astounded by the pitching depth and arms we have 15-30 with the kids in the minors. We are well run and will overcome this.
Blew this, Severino had this problem right at start of spring training last year, a guy does not pitch in 4 months, comes in and has the forearm pain that always indicates there could be an elbow problem, they let an entire year go by doing nothing but bullshitting themselves and everyone else, but this is also on Sevy and Cashman, do they communicate at all? This is a disgrace.
Sign big contract, take a few years off, go shopping. Honorary mention to Aaron Hicks.
Hicks and Severino are no comparison to Ellsbury. The former two were pre-free agency extensions and came a lot cheaper.
Interesting though that the two pre-free agency extensions the Yankees signed recently have been so injury prone. I still favor them for the team (and you can see why they can be favorable for the player as well)
it once was. But even still, I don't think Sevy will ever be that #1 ace top of the line guy we were hoping he might be, even without the TJ surgery. He'll still be a 2-3 type guy when he gets back, but at this point I'd be surprised if he becomes an ace. Oh well.
As someone else mentioned above, wouldn't be surprised at all if we trade in those chips at the deadline for another near top-line starter. They're going for it this year with or without Sevy. Sevy certainly isn't going to be stopping that.
Sign big contract, take a few years off, go shopping. Honorary mention to Aaron Hicks.
Honestly GFY. You don't think Severino is devastated by this news? You think he'd rather spend the next 12 months rehabbing than be with his teammates competing for a championship? You think he's faking having a torn UCL?

The Yankees hell bent pursuit of Cole to not be outbid no matter what I think lends some thought to the fact that the Yankees had an inkling of the potential issues for Sevy and Paxton and hoped it wouldn't come to fruition. The fact that Happ wasn't traded when it seemed like he would be during the Winter Meetings was also an indication. The Yankees are extremely conservative in holding off from going under the knife and want to try everything before they go that route. It worked with Tanaka, but no luck for the others.

Last year at ST was shoulder then later on lat. Nothing to do with the elbow.

Not saying the Yankees, didn't have an inkling of the issues, but they should have gone hellbent after Cole regardless of Severino's health. Top 3-4 starter in the game, maybe the most valuable when you consider the age/health vs. the others, and it weakens their biggest AL rival.

but at this point his coming back from that suspension is going to be pretty important.
Before I'd part ways with German, I'd like to know what he did to get suspended. Not sure if that was really explained. I know we all want a clean roster, but I'd like to know what this was and if it is habitual. Repeat offenders should be gone without question.
they should fire Dr. Chris Ahmad last week, some said I 'overreacted', What do you think now?
The "great" team physician gave Sevy two rounds of tests
in the offseason, and one round the end of last week,
and found nothing wrong?? They fly him up to NYC,
and quickly realized that he needs TJS.
I predicted last week, he would need surgery as well.
You know they changed their strength & conditioning staff,
might be time to look into a new team physician as well!
It's not the first time this idiot has had a mis-diagnosis
around here. Hopefully Paxton is back in May, then German
is back in early June I believe. Monty, step on up.

.
I would like to know how Chapman only got 30 games for firing off a gun a half dozen times, and German got 81 games myself.
We didn't hear much about German's situation, so who knows?
is out there, if they decide at some point to sign a veteran. I think they let ST play out a bit first,
see what they have. Of course, somebody else could swoop
in as well, time will tell.

Yeah, good question on shooting the gun into his garage walls. I guess he did not lay a hand on his spouse, although him ranting and shooting off his weapon in a garage has to be pretty terrifying.
Have to believe German got physical with his wife, but as you said, who knows.
You guys crack me up with this criticizing the Dr bs
like a billion dollar orginization is going to let some quack go over their xrays and diagnose. As soon as a guy complains of some elbow tightness you wanna race in there and cut him up to "get it over with". You do realize that some tests are inconclusive, there's no tear and then boom he throws a bit in spring training and it tears. Like they rushed him back last year? They waited over 5 months to get him in a game. These things happen they're called injuries guys. You have no fucking clue whatsoever what shape his elbow was in last October. He felt something they did multiple MRI's and there was no tear, and now there is. Everyone is always looking for blame, like some Dr. could have prevented this. News flash: They couldn't.

No, they did a couple MRIs and CT scan the other day after the pain and saw nothing. That is the problem.
Last season, this was literally the most injured team in MLB history. It's now 2/25, and Sevy is already out for the year, Paxton is due back sometime in May, and Judge's shoulder is already barking and was/is? shutdown from hitting last week.
And it's the first week of ST. Like, come on. We can't have a repeat of last season in terms of injuries. These guys aren't even old. They're not doing anything crazy out there. Like, enough already. Just imagine when these guys are alittle older. Christ. They'll barely be able to move.
but i'm also a Luis Severino fan. This sucks big time. I'm losing out on another prime season of watching this man pitch.
I hope his recovery is swift and he embraces that mamba mentality.
Same. And since this is more of a 2 year thing with the recovery, who knows? By the time he is 100% again, he might be out or close to out of his prime already. Ridiculous.
get to watch him for two years. I think we all envisioned him as the ace for the next 6-8 years when he was pumping 99mph by hitters and making them look silly with that wicked slider in 2018.
As much as I want to say next man up, there is nobody in the minors close to him in terms of pure stuff and potential. Maybe if Medina puts it all together, a big MAYBE.
I know HSS is the premier orthopedic program in the entire country, but can't say I'm impressed by their handling of the Yankees and Mets players.
MRIs and CT scans miss this? They just told us that they were clean.
Cashman needs to seriously consider shitcanning the entire medical staff.
Some big opportunities for young pitchers.
But on another note, Paxton, knockwood, could be back by end of May. Rehab is going well.
Cole, Tanaka, Montgomery, Happ...Deivi? King? Stretch out Chad Green?
I would not allow Loaisiga to start. He will be dynamite from the pen, but to frail for SP role.
Can 't believe this kind of news about Yankee starting pitching in February. Paxton and then Severino. What?? Triple A on the medical staff: fire 'em all. The SP? Happ? Really? Not the answer.
Needless to say this puts an ENORMOUS dent in the Yanks chances of winning a championship this year.
Good on the Yanks for not rushing to get rid of Happ.

Domingo German.
The postseason is a given and Cole/Paxton/Tanaka/German can be enough when it counts.
If history is guide, there will be a lot of hand wringing over the pitching and, come October, the bats will fail.
