Lombardo: Could Daniel Jones be traded?

DonQuixote : 2/25/2020 6:47 pm
Here is a particularly bad article. I’ve followed the pressers today and DG and JJ make it clear that they are not discussing individual players and are focusing on open competition, for many reasons.

With that, the headlines is, “ Giants’ Dave Gettleman, Joe Judge refuse to commit to Daniel Jones as franchise QB | Could he be traded? What would it cost?”

And the article discusses Gettleman’s commitment to DJ as “tepid at best”, noting that the Gmen have not met Tua, but are evaluating QBs, which may both be true but say nothing of note.

I know it’s lying season but this strikes me as one of the most glaringly misleading articles I’ve read in a while.

this type of article was coming when Judge wouldn't commit completely at his presser.

new commitment to refuse discussing individual players and trying to turn it into a Daniel Jones controversy is bordering on pathetic.

Tua was the slam dunk #1 - for a reason. And many still view him as the next Drew Brees.

If Judge has the conviction that Tua is the next Drew Brees and that Jones is not THE guy, then it is something you have to consider. Period.

Is it possible?
section125 : 2/25/2020 6:56 pm : link
yes it is possible.

Will it happen?
Doubtful.
FWIW, the Giants also didn’t commit to Barkley...
DonQuixote : 2/25/2020 6:59 pm : link
...as a starter, but I think we can safely pencil him in.
btw - if you watch the press conference - which was not reported
gidiefor : Mod : 2/25/2020 7:00 pm : link
accurately by any stretch of the imagination - Judge went to great lengths to explain why they weren't talking about individual players
To be clear this is my opinion only
jvm52106 : 2/25/2020 7:00 pm : link
and I satte no knowledge or inside info:

There is NO way the Giants hired a coach who wasn't a believer in Daniel Jones! None, zero, zilch! Put it to bed.

What Judge is saying is, why would I say there is an open, clear slate while in public talking about this player or that. He is setting the tone that all will be held responsible and will need to prove themselves. This is a great move and a smart move.

Many here complained for the last few years that Eli kind of got a free pass on his play and not held to the same standards as others. Judge is doing just that here, all will be held the same. Yes, at some point DJ is the starter and SB is the starter but, for now all will be held with the same expectations.
I get Judge channeling his inner...

based on the comments, today. I listened to the pressers and with the non-committal to any player/depth chart. I interpreted it as a motivational tool for both players and coaches. But what piqued my ears was the mention of no sacred cows. Woah! I began using the zero scholarship/no sacred cows euphemism towards the end of last season when it was apparent that a new staff would be brought in. We were in the midst of an 8 game losing streak captained by our very own Danny Boy in position to pick #2. There were a number of discussions clamoring for Young, but Go Terps picked up on my No Sacred Cows mantra and ran with it. The idea was that the new staff shouldn't be forced to work with any players they didn't see fit and picking as high as we were positioned at the time, it would be a dereliction of their duties if they didn't consider QB with all other positions.

Yes, Daniel Jones could be traded. Noah Syndergaard could hit 60 home runs in 2020. Aliens could land and solve global warming and gift humankind tech for unlimited clean energy. These things are possible. They could happen.

No, they're not likely enough to spend time discussing them.

I haven't read the article, but I get that sometimes you're going in looking to see or hear something, and when you don't, you flag that as significant. I covered Arnold Schwarzenegger's election night rally in 2004, when he was running for re-election. Notably absent from the room: Bush-Cheney signs. So I reported in my story that the room lacked any signs for the national ticket.

But I didn't ask in my story: "Could Arnold Schwarzenegger have secretly supported John Kerry?" You report what's notable by its absence and avoid speculation. But that was before the clickbait era. I may be a dinosaur that way.
Speculation about nothing really

What is most likely is that Gettleman, Judge, and the Giants are telegraphing at least a cursory interest in the likes of Justin Herbert, Tagovailoa, and the other quarterbacks to boost the value of the No. 4 pick in a potential trade back.

“There are a lot of good players in this draft,” Gettleman said.

Do you think there is a QB in this draft that is better than DJ?

I'm not arguing here I myself don't see it given what DJ did minus the fumbles. I'm curious who would be the one given that Burrows will be gone

I don't. But the exercise at the time is that the new staff shouldn't be hamstrung with any specific players. We were terrible with them. We can be terrible without them. If the new staff wanted to trade Barkley, then so be it. I lost all personal attachment to any of these players. The whole Sacred Cows mantra was that they all can be sent to slaughter (traded/cut).
Why does JJ have to name any player while he is evaluating the team?
montanagiant : 2/25/2020 7:38 pm : link
The point he is trying to get across is that this is a team-first and foremost not individual players. He has yet to see them work as a group outside of tape that's on a bunch of young players with minimal time in the league.

He is trying to change the losing culture and is doing so by putting forth the idea that its TEAM FIRST. I think that is refreshing and a great approach to taking over this team.

This does not mean he doesn't like JJ, it means that he wants them all working together with no one being more important than anyone else

to make sure this speculation is out there

No one expects them to draft a QB but if there is a 5-10% possibility in the mind of a team drafting behind us...its a windfall.

They privately tell DJ to hang tough we are playing this out...they use the JJ Im new everyone prove it to me. They get Garrett to meet with several QB's between now and then. They bring in 1-2 for private workouts and send out a happy all smiles photo op

This is exactly what you should hope for as a NYG fan. This is what FO do.

If they sense any breeze of interest from slots 5-8...then expect more PR not less.

You want them to drum up another 2nd or another 1st from smoke and mirrors.

I also view this as a good sign. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. For all anyone knows, maybe the Giants are interested in trading up for Burrow. Anything that obfuscates their true intentions and possibly drives someone to make a trade pushing down a non-QB they're interested in is a good thing.

EXACTLY!
There is NO way anyone who listened to the interviews could come to Lombardo's conclusion. The article is intended to draw in those who didn't watch.

It doesn't make any sense to trade DJ, even if you think Tua may have a higher ceiling. You don't trade a proven commodity for an untested college player coming off a serious injury. (Fumbles can be cured; ask Tiki.)

Besides, on one hand as JJ said, this is a young team and a lot of these players with good coaching can make considerable improvement.
On the other hand, there are real holes that DG/PS/Bettcher tried filling with vets that I think JJ will replace with more youngsters. The NYG can't afford to waste a high draft pick on re-loading the QB position. JJ's vision is clearly beyond this next season.

Re DG paying attention to QBs - DJ needs a backup and I wouldn't put it past JJ/DG to be looking in the middle rounds for someone they can evaluate and develop this year (a la Garoppola) with Tanney or another low cost vet as insurance in 2020. (They have Garoppola's mentor on board.)
