I think it took me until my third reading at around age 30 to "get" the Oddessey.
For a dyed in the wool humanist and rationalist, as I consider myself mostly, the Oddessey is clearly one of the fundamental tomes of Western Civilization.
For fun I wrote a "book review" of it and showed it to my GF at the time, and she passed it on to her boss who was chair of the English Dept at a prestigious NYC private school.
He loved it, thought I should try to publish it.
Of course I never did...
