I thought it would be a good idea to consolidate all the rumors pertaining to the Giants on one thread. Let's try to keep this thread clean and post only news from trusted media sources.
Answer: because he's not a good football player. Hard pass unless it's on the cheap. If we give him a ridiculous payday like Beasley got I'll be joining the 'run DG out of town' nutters.
. Poking around d another team's washouts is a symptom of such. Chicago's defensive coaching was really good in the last few years. Floyd may just be what he looks like. An athlete, not a football player.
Here’s an answer on Floyd’s lack of sacks (not a great one)
Since his first year in the league, Floyd’s sack numbers have steadily decreased. He has only totaled 11.5 sacks in the past three seasons. However, he still has shown the consistent ability to rush the passer with 35 quarterback hits and 75 pressures during this span.
“ Expect the Giants to be searching for more value at the edge rusher position. They will look into Leonard Floyd and others but don’t foresee them jumping at the top names available.
They’re also looking at affordable options at RT and C. #NFLFreeAgency”

Cordy Glenn?
Why is that they never seem to make a concerted effort to
fill the FS spot? Such an important position that they’ve been mostly neglecting since Rolle. Center too but at least they seem ready to do that this offseason.

Personally, I like Love. I have high hopes for him.
...that the Giants don't think like fans do, won't sign everyone that they would like to, won't even try to sign everyone that the all-knowing fan base would like them to, have a far better understanding of the salary/cap situation than the fans do, know what their next move is likely to be based on UFA availability and what their plans might be heading into the draft and the next season...
...I think that the Giants, specifically Dave Gettleman, is having a pretty good week.
Dave will be fine.
Go Giants!

RE: Anak barring a draft pick like McKinney(unlikely)...
I'd definitely give Love first crack at the starting FS job too.
My guess is love gets firsr crack unless the take simmons and feel he is a safety first. If they do and he is the pick love will be third safety. Im more concerned about our edge players right now vs love

The jury is still out but I don’t think Love is ever going to be that deep-half safety with range that they so desperately need. He was playing more at the LOS and in the box than anywhere else and played a bunch in the slot too. Small sample size at FS and there was some good and some bad but it’s still tbd if he can excel there full time and I don’t think they should be handing him that job right out of the gate in year 2 either. I’d rather have him as a third safety, jack of all trades type and hope for the best than to pin our hopes on him developing into a strong FS.
For more on Love this was what Sy said in his week 17 game review
Julian Love was a mixed bag as we have seen in recent weeks. He had 8 tackles, 2 TFL, and 1 PD. He also missed a tackle and was getting beat, routinely, by Greg Ward, Jr. in coverage. I am optimistic with Love when it comes to his potential to impact the team. The question is, where? He played a similar safety role to Jabrill Peppers and I wouldn’t want either of them in the deep FS-type role that Bethea was playing. I think Love could do it more than I believe in Peppers, but they may need to find a nickel role for him depending on, once again, the new scheme that is coming
"was playing more at the LOS and in the box than anywhere else"
Listen you and I have gotten into it but this is about football. He absolutely got a long stretch run at FS this year. Especially the last 5 weeks or so. He played more there than any other position and he showed improvement.
in the box (176 snaps), slot corner (129 snaps) free safety (77 snaps). I don’t pay for PFF so I don’t have the game by game breakdown but Bethea was on the field for every snap on defense Love played except for week 14 and Bethea missed just 2 snaps. Going back and looking at Sy’s game reviews he talks about Love’s role in several of them the majority of which being in Peppers’ role after he went down.
This is week 15 for example:
“ -Julian Love’s role with this team will be interesting to watch in the offseason. He finished with yet another strong game. He had 5 tackles / 2 TFL / 1 pressure / 1 pass break up. He is playing the versatile role of Jabrill Peppers with a lot of action in the box and excelling. Can he be moved back into the role of Antoine Bethea? On paper that is ideal, but I’m not sure he can produce from that spot. All of that aside, his play has been stellar.”

Thanks for these snippets. Did not see Sy gig him for the FS play vs DC. I still think he can play FS. He was a bit of a ball hawk at ND(as CB), so it would seem he could play FS. Perhaps it had more to do with a move to FS from SS and insufficient reps at FS. He is not afraid to tackle, in fact he is a bit too aggressive and misses a few by not breaking down soon enough, so that is a concern. He has to be significantly faster than Bethea.
Unless they sign another vet FS, I think Love should be given a serious look at FS.

From what I have seen Love in a hybrid slot/S Rolle would be ideal. Looking more for a true deep saftey to esentially fill the nickel spot kickng Love to the slot. kind of a 3 saftey big Nickel package.
My sense might be that Ballentine could adapt to being the deep saftey. maybe allow him to break on the ball and essentially become a weapon for us back there as he has good ball skills and is good woth the ball in his hands. Not in a base set but in a passing down sub package that allows for Peppers and Love to be aggressive blitzing from the slot

I think the biggest knock on Floyd is probably his durability. He has been a disappointment as a pass rusher, but I would assume if the Giants sign him - they'd move him around. He's actually very good in coverage and may reduce the desire for a guy like Isaiah Simmons...which would turn their attention more towards OT.
I'm not saying Floyd is Simmons by any stretch. But they may feel he can do a lot of the same things...at least along that LB front.
like Clowney hasn't seen the market he was hoping to.
Wonder if the Giants swoop back in at a short term deal with a lower number. 3/54 or something Link - ( New Window )
I think the market for a lot of these guys isn't what they are hoping for, hence the 3 year deals. No one wants a 3 year deal but if the guaranteed money isn't all that different from what you would be offered at 4 or 5 years, might as well take the shorter contract and try again next time.
Quote:
he has a first step that nobody else on this team has had since Osi left town.
Then why does he have 7 sacks in two years.
Good question, I don't know.
In the last two seasons alone, Floyd has racked up 49 pressures, 23 hits, and seven sacks while starting all 32 games at outside linebacker on the Bears defense.
Why the giants should take a chance on Leonard floyd - ( New Window )
Maybe it's the name Leonard????? Opponents are like I'm not giving up a sack to a dude named Leonard.
Pass.

Might be worth a look. He could start and we should still draft a Center, like we did with Richburg his Rookie season.

Sniffing around RB/WR also but monitoring C Coleman, but those positions they might wait for longer than OT/C/ER
