Updates from reporters on Giants free agent targets

Vin_Cuccs : 3/18/2020 8:05 pm
Here is a summary of info from the beat reporters/news outlets today:

Still interested in edge rusher Jordan Jenkins, but he was looking for $13 million per year. The Giants are still interested, but not at that price.

One scout said Toilolo is the type of guy you use to help ease a rookie into action or assist an inexperienced tackle. Hint for the draft?

Markus Golden is still available, and an option, but there seems to be something impeding that potential deal. Price?

Giants were interested in C Ted Karras before he signed with the Dolphins, but the level of interest was unknown.

Giants have interest in 35 year old QB Matt Moore as a back-up.

If there was a free agent available the Giants liked better than Leonard Williams, they’d rescind the tag and sign that player. But that player doesn’t exist.

Leonard Floyd was probably never a realistic option. His value was too high.

Offensive line will eventually be addressed in free agency.

WR Russell Shepard was never high on the priority list to stay.

There might be interest in bringing back recently cut C/OG Evan Brown to compete for a roster spot.

Devon Kennard was never a realistic option to return.

S Vonn Bell will not return to the Saints when they signed Malcolm Jenkins. Bell would be a good scheme fit, but price will probably prohibit that signing.

The team will likely address FS in free agency.
Thanks

They are pretty close to the cap limit they expressed. Any OL help or safety help will need to be pretty cheap.
it's amazing that a team with nearly $80 million in cap space
CMicks3110 : 3/18/2020 8:11 pm : link
is behaving so frugally. We could theoretically be at the top of the market.

It's clearly a strategy by the Giants, the front-loading of contracts.

I'm really interested in seeing what their draft looks like.

I also wonder if they are considering signing a few of their own players early at discounts. Tomlinson, Engram, Hernandez, Peppers.

Thank for breaking most of signing.....this should be pinned

I like it. It is the first time in a long time that they are being realistic with their outlook. They know we aren't at a level to truly compete yet so they aren't going all in by being fiscally irresponsible. They front loaded these contracts and rightfully so. There are a bunch of benefits to this. One, this allows us to build our team through the draft and in FA for future years. This gives us outs on these contracts if these players don't perform with little cap penalties. In that same breath, if we ever wanted to trade these players we can get draft picks and not take a cap hit. This allows us to slowly build up our team over the foreseeable future. I like this better than overspending on high priced FA that we will want to get rid if for underperforming.
Interesting...
Philu916 : 3/18/2020 8:18 pm : link
Saw earlier someone mentioned it’s possible Clowney could be a player that would make it worth rescinding Williams Tag. Also, mentioned Golden and something is limiting the deal right now. Is that also possibly Jenkins or Clowney? If Jenkins at $13M is too high, wouldn’t Golden at around that price be too high?
Is there any talk of Solder renegotiating to free up some space?

I kept reading on this board that DG with all that cap space while sitting on the hot seat would be a disaster. Now I'm reading that he's not spending enough. I dunno, maybe he's being a responsible GM and trying to spend wisely?

When you have so any critical holes and had a decent cap situation, it’s amazing that we really haven’t addressed our biggest needs and yet have little cap space remaining to do so. Add to that he fact that the verdict is still out on DG 2.0 the talent evaluator. And this feels like many more tough years ahead.

Gotta hope JJ and his staff are truly outstanding coaches!

I think Judge came in and revamped a lot of shit. It doesn’t guarantee instant results, as I think we are headed for another long losing season, but it will pay off in subsequent seasons. Finding modest/cheap stop gaps until the FO finds long term solutions is a smart way to go.

I;ve posted in two other thread besides this one today. So...yeah, following me around. You're the one who's thing on here is following around posters and going off on them for not fellating a franchise that has sucked for nearly a decade straight.

Like, that is literally your station in life for several years now. If I were you and had no job, no wife, and no kids, I guess I'd resort to fellating my favorite teams no matter the results and going after the big meanie's on their message boards who don't approve of every single failing season and move they make. we got 2-3 starters. The contracts being set up like they are is just an added bonus. Glad they took advantage of the cap flexibility.

I wouldn’t say they were frugal they did sign two of the higher priced defensive players and both are younger.

Hopefully the giants can get that center in FA or even trade. Then draft.

It's more that there isnt a move made that decisively makes them better. I like the Bradberry deal, but if the pass rush is as bad as it was last year, its largely not going to matter how good Bradberry can play if he has to cover for an eternity.

I know you're the Giants police and all you do is call out people who don't praise every Giants move, but 'ruining' a thread isn't posting a dissenting opinion to a move a team makes. People are allowed to have opinions whether you like them or not. Not everyone is just going to praise every move every single offseason when this team has been in the postseason once since 2012. It hasn't been a good team. It's been a horrendous team. This is NOT opinion. It is fact. And signing LB's who can't cover TEs isn't helping.

And UConn, 'baffling' is a funny word to use. The exact word that comes to mind when some of the folks here defend every move made in every offseason despite the *strong* majority of those moves have been proven to not help the team do anything but win 9 games in two seasons.
OK let's look at some of the positives.
idinkido : 3/19/2020 7:10 am : link
The Reese/Ross regime left us with a team with no OL, crappy running game with crappy LBs. The team they left us had a poor attitude and too many players who just couldn't give a damn. Gentlemen tried to change that. He was dealing with a serious illness personally and a team that was clinically dead. He made big mistakes in free agency but his College Drafts gave us a lot of talented players, plus Barkley and Jones, who are the foundation of this team. I don't think Shurmur was a disaster because he had little to support him in players and in assistant coaches. What he did accomplish was that his team played hard. The Giants didn't win but the culture on the team improved. Judge comes in to finish the job and I think he is the right coach to do it. He is taking over a team with young players who play hard and has his running back and QB in place, plus has an experienced and good assistant coaching staff. This team is headed for future success. We don't know the timeline when this is going to happen, yet most of us have to feel good seeing the coaching staff that is in place.
This wasn't going to bottom out until Eli retired
dd in Mass : 3/19/2020 8:14 am : link
The owners were never going to cut Eli. So this had to play out. DG had a mandate to try and put a winning team together for Eli's last run. It didn't work out, so now we are in rebuild mode.

What don't people get, you can blame DG all you want. The true decision makers were Mara and Tisch. This all part of the transition process.

Now if we are not competitive by next year, then you can fire DG and Judge along with him.

If NYG go 6-10, you’re firing Judge as well as DG? DG sure but giving Judge 1 year is nuts unless they go like 2-14.
I agree with your first comment, not on your second
UConn4523 : 3/19/2020 9:37 am : link
they are all in on Judge and seem to have given him power that they haven't given since Coughlin. I think he's got far more say in the roster than McAdoo and Shurmur did.

But part of that is because of your first point, Eli is gone. And I agree, Mara not being able to rip the band aid off is the #1 reasons why we are where we are.

Hopefully its all over with now.
Dave, this lockdown has left you bitter and angry
UConn4523 : 3/19/2020 9:44 am : link
some fresh air might do you good. What does me liking a move have to do with anything anyway? Liking or not liking a move has no bearing on what happens on the field so i'm not going to bother getting upset that "i lost the guy I wanted" - boo hoo.

I wanted an upgrade on the line too and is hasn't happened yet. There's still FA left and the draft. I'm a reasonable, patient person and in the end its a fucking game. If what's going on in the world hasn't woken you up yet about how not serious sports are then I don't know what to tell you.

So i'm going to look on the bright side of every acquisition and look forward. Constantly harping on all the bad over the last 7 or 8 years doesn't do anything for anyone. You think Judge is looking at our 2015 draft and scratching his head on what to do next?
