And why do you think they didn't?
His contract wasn't all that expensive considering he was the top FA tackle out there. 3 years at $42 million ($30 million and first two years guaranteed).
I don't think they Giants passed on him because of durability. He missed one year because of an ACL tear but otherwise started every game. He's also an excellent run blocker.
My guess is the Giants' plan is to go OT in the first round, with whomever they draft being a starter from Game 1.
As far as why we didn't sign him who knows. These guys get to choose where they go.
I certainly wouldn't have over bid what he got on the open market.
Would I have liked him? Sure. Is it the end of the world? No. There’s something they didn’t like about him, and I don’t care about our history with the OL considering our coach and OL coach had nothing to do with the roster they inherited.
And then there is always he did not to come for a rebuild.
It would be good to draft a T on day 1 or 2 that can add to the competition and maybe factor in at LT as well. I'm worried more about center and why the left side took big step backwards last season.
Conklin is strictly a RT and is average in pass pro.
Or maybe they will go with Fleming and Gates fighting it out for RT, Solder is the LT in 2020 and they draft Ezra Cleveland in round 2 who is a LT.
Hopefully DG doesn’t screw it up.
If we only come out of this draft with promising Tackles & Centers and maybe throw in a developmental WR and LB, I would tell you this was the best draft strategy in years.
I am very disappointed, however, in not going for Bulaga.

This is a bullshit post with no basis in fact.
Why not? Who knows. Maybe they’re all-in on an OT in round 1 and don’t to be in a situation where a top 10 pick has to sit behind Solder/Conklin.
In any event, it was a mistake not to sign him. He’s an all-pro caliber OT and the team needs a RT, C, and LT to push Solder.
Conklin is better than Wills will ever be and you want the Giants to draft Wills at 4.
You're 'creative critiques' of my posts are borderline stalking at this point. They're also blatant lies.
Guess I've drubbed you in too many debates but we'll just add this to the list.

No, you just hold yourself out as some sort of expert when you don’t know shit about shit.
Who was a better RT than Conklin last year?
The injury had zero impact last year. He was a top RT in ‘19.
The Titans had every opportunity to re-sign him, still have plenty of money under the cap this year, and decided to sign his back up instead.
So either Robinson and Vrabel are total fools, or they know first hand what shape he's in.

You really seem to take the Conklin thing personally. You keep saying hes an "all pro caliber RT". He hasnt played at an all pro level in 4 years. If he had Tennessee would have picked up his option and would have locked him up long term.

I can see how it seems that way but the reality is I would just like to see the Giants OL fixed. Conklin would’ve been a nice piece to get the OL where it needs to be.
Conklin played at an all-pro level last year. He didn’t get the recognition. But he was that good. Llewan, Conklin, and Jones were the reason why that OL played well last year. They’re the reason why Henry has such a big impact. They’re the reason why Tannehill got an absurd new contract. Anyone who focused on what Conklin was doing last year could see he’s a difference maker.
The option point has already been explained several times over. He tore his ACL in the 17 playoffs and the injury impacted his 18 season. Tenn elected not to pick up the option given the circumstances. He bounced back fully recovered in 19 and had a great year.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out in CLE but I wouldn’t be surprised if Chubb has a monster year. In any event, there’s nothing about Conklin that’s average — and even if he was, average is a big upgrade over the trash the Giants have trotted out at OT for years.
DG gives a record deal to Solder, blows money on Omameh, dumpster dives for Remmers/Fleming, and rolls Halapio out at Center and we’re applauding the non-interest in Conklin? Dorks here applaud giving a middling CB in Bradbury 15 mil per and shrug off an all-pro RT who signed for 14 mil per?
This place is dumb and people never learn.

Okay...first off. Bradberry isnt middling, he is and up and coming corner. You will appreciate him this year. Secondly, conklin is a very gokd RT but i think the giants are going Ot early onnthis draft and didnt want a top ten pick sitting the bench.
Third. Wills will never be as good as conklin? This is a statemebt that in my opinion kills any solid ppint you may have made. You havent seen him play a single down of pro football.
Incan tell you this. He has WAY better feet than conklin and that isnt even close. He is a vetter pass protector too. Regardless of how wills turns out. Its a dumb comment to make that he will never be as good.
Wills projects as an average NFL OL from what I’ve seen. Very ordinary. Saying he won’t come close to Conklin is based off what I see and simply the odds. Conklin is a proven commodity with an impressive resume. Wills isn’t.
If the Giants are making FA decisions based on how they think the draft will unfold and out of fear that a top 10 player will sit then that’s just dumb. What if Young drops? Don’t take him bc you’re all-in on OT? What if a team offers a haul for 4? The Eagles took Dillard top 20 last year and let him sit all year. That’s not dumb, it’s an investment.
What’s dumb is passing on OL solutions when the opportunity presents itself. Conklin could’ve been our next McKenzie. If I had to bet on it, people will be bringing this up for years just like the other quality OL the Giants have passed on in FA and the draft in recent years.
He was ranked 35th in sacks allowed. So yeah only 34 OT's most of them with worse running games gave up fewer sacks.
He was ranked 30th in penalties. So only 29 OT's were less penalized.
But go ahead spewing your usual garbage unsubstantiated by anything.
Exactly!

The fundamental issue here is you value Conklin very highly (overrate him IMO, no offense) while many others have a lesser opinion. That's not to say hes not a solid player. I dont think anyone is saying hes not. But pan out a little and try to see the big picture...
Hes a plus player in the run game for sure. But hes a concern in the passing game. I think it was PFF who noticed he received TE/RB help on more pass plays than any OT in football. Hes just not an all pro caliber player. And yes, I watched a lot of Titans football once they started to emerge with Tannehill bc I love the run game. Good player. Absolutely a net upgrade over what we've had. But not a great player. And you cant give good players great player money. You also cant just run out and sign every player who is better than what you have. That talent doesnt just exist in a vacuum. There are other factors.
With Conklin the money is a factor. How is it a factor when they had 78 million and he signed for 14? Look at the other contracts on the books, specifically LT. Nate Solder is a textbook case of why you dont shop hungry and give a good player great money. We already have 1 OT who regularly needs help in pass sets. With a 19 mill cap hit to boot. Add Conklin's 14 mill and youre now paying 33 million dollars for a pair of bookends who both need help on roughly half of your offensive plays. Part of the reason Conklin fared well in Tennessee was because Lewan could be on an island with no help. Thats not the case here. You cant devote nearly 20% of your salary cap to that. Its losing football, largely in part to it being compounded down the road when youre trying to get out of those contracts. Look at the dead-money hell they just got out of. I dont ever want to see that again, and if it means being judicious with FAs Im fine with that.
Simply put: if the Titans thought he was an all pro there's no way he walks. All pro OL dont grow on trees, especially in this era of football. But they let him walk. Thats a huge indication that hes not quite what youre saying he is. I know the desire to get better is strong. But Id rather go about it smartly and build something (primarily) through the draft. Im not against being aggressive when a true elite talent hits the market. But not these slightly above average, best of what's available type guys. Its fools gold. It might take a little longer to see this vision through to fruition, but once its there it has the potential to be special because the foundation is that much more stable.
