This doesn’t mean that Golden is equal to Mack.

But it serves as a good reference for how well Golden performed last season when rushing the passer.

Birkett Detroit Free Press: How the Detroit Lions missed out on top free agent CB James Bradberry to the Giants

“James Bradberry, who agreed to a three-year, $43.5 million deal with the New York Giants last week, said Monday on "The Jim Rome Show" that the Lions were his runner-up team.
"It was either between the Lions and New York and I just feel like New York was the better fit for me," Bradberry said. "I knew (Giants general manager Dave) Gettleman, so I know what type of organization he’s trying to build over there and I knew some of the players that were there as well and they had nothing but good things to say about the organization. So I feel like it was the right fit."

Bradberry said in his radio interview Monday that he didn't get any red flags about playing in Detroit.

"Nah," he said. "I feel like both organizations were great. I feel like both coaches were great coaches, I just feel like New York might have been a better feel for me. It’s a great city. It’s something new for me. I’m more of an introvert and I wanted to go to a big city just so I can explore a little bit more around the city."

Mariota gets up to $2.4 million if he plays 60% of the snaps in 2020. Another $1.5m is available in per-game playing time and win incentives. Has $10m in those incentives available in 2021. Also $2 million in playoff/Super Bowl incentives each year + $12m in 2021 salary escalator

NEW YORK JETS
Cimini ESPN NY: The return of OLB Jordan Jenkins is a win for the Jets, who keep a solid starter at a reasonable price — one year for a reported $5M (NFL Network). The market never warmed for him, so he decided to accept the Jets' prove-it deal. In a year, he can take another bite at the apple. Despite a team-high eight sacks, Jordan isn't a prolific edge rusher, but he's a good, complementary piece in Gregg Williams' defense. The Jets still are seeking that elusive edge presence.

Washington is stuck with $1 million in dead money from his signing bonus. “Lewis had two years remaining on his four-year contract, which he signed in 2018 for $19.8 million, including $8.25 million in guarantees. While he had a few moments early on during his Titans stint, Lewis never lived up to the expectations in Tennessee.
The 5-foot-8 running back averaged only 3.5 yards per carry during his two seasons with the Titans. In 2019, he ran for only 209 yards as his playing time dipped dramatically. He had only 25 catches for 164 yards, down from 59 catches for 400 yards in 2018.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/03/23/montae-nicholson-released-redskins/?outputType=amp#click=https://t.co/s6yBZT6LM2

Keim ESPN Washington: The Redskins released safety Montae Nicholson, ending a three-year association filled with both promise and frustration. Nicholson flashed as a fourth-round rookie in 2017, but injuries and off-field issues led the organization to desire other options. The Redskins signed safety Sean Davis last week and could still add another player at this spot. They also released corners Breon Borders, Kayvon Webster, Dee Delaney and Coty Sensabaugh.

Keim ESPN Washington: When Dunbar's trade demand was first made, I reached out to a few people about his value. Most said probably a 4th. What hurt: injuries; also sure some teams questioned his handling of this. Didn't help. Loved how Dunbar made himself into a good CB. but The Redskins were not in a spot to get any sort of max value (a 2nd? no chance.) for someone w/1 year left off injuries making noise. Rivera clearly decided he didn't want to bring him back. would it become an issue? With TW: Stronger track record; more ability for better return Dunbar's rise was excellent. Studied. Worked. But if you're a first year coach who doesn't know the player and all u know is that he's good, but hasn't played 16 games? You'll take what you get and move on. Other teams were offering 6/7th round picks. That was the value.

Farrar Touchdownwire USA Today: Touchdown Wire's post-free agency mock draft: Cornerbacks grab pole position

4. New York Giants: Isaiah Simmons, Defense, Clemson

“Giants general manager Dave Gettleman made some atypically strong moves in free agency, acquiring cornerback James Bradberry and linebacker Blake Martinez to help a defense in desperate need. The decision to apply the franchise tag to defensive lineman Leonard Williams was utterly mystifying, except when you consider Gettleman’s history of surety that his way is the right way. Bradberry projects as a top cornerback, and Martinez is a good run-stopping linebacker who gets lost in coverage quite easily. To further help this defense, let’s give them Isaiah Simmons, who has become the prototype of the modern do-it-all linebacker, and can show up anywhere from the edge to the slot to any ‘backer position to safety.”

T
Edholm Yahoo Sports: 43. Houston OT Josh Jones
6-foot-5, 319 pounds
Yahoo Sports draft grade: 5.94

“TL;DR scouting report: Body-beautiful tackle with plus athleticism, but NFL scouting opinions vary widely on his upside.
The skinny: A 3-star Rivals recruit who initially committed to Oklahoma State, Jones landed at Houston with then-coach Tom Herman in 2015 and was redshirted his first season on campus. After putting on more than 25 pounds, Jones won the starting left tackle spot in 2016 and remained there — minus games missed with injury in 2017 in 2019 — for the remainder of his Cougars career.
Jones started 13 games in 2016, 10 in 2017 (missed games against ECU and Tulane with a knee injury) and 13 more in 2018. In the 2019 season, Jones was named second-team all-AAC as a senior despite only starting the first nine games before missing the remainder with a knee injury.
Jones, who turns 23 years old in June, attended the Senior Bowl and NFL scouting combine and was a standout at both places.
Upside: Solid dimensions: nice height, length and a frame that could support more mass if needed. Even so, has what scouts refer to as a “bubble butt” — and that’s a good thing. Good athletic traits and a nice template to work with.
Four years of tape displayed tangible improvement in college, capped with impressive final season. Plenty of dominant stretches in 2019. Also played handful of snaps at right tackle and could be cross-trained as a swing OT. Had to learn three different playbooks in college and was coached by four OL coaches.
Basketball athleticism — quick, active feet and lateral quickness to slide and adjust — shows up readily in pass protection. Effective on the move, hitting landmarks quickly and smoothly. Pulls nicely and gets into space on screens and draws. Can sink his hips and bends extremely well for a man his size.
Pass pro is his bread and butter with only five sacks allowed over final three seasons. Fires his hands out well and clearly has been coached up in this regard. Utilizes a variety of handwork, replaces them well and will enter the NFL more advanced in this regard than typical rookies. Patient blocker who knows when to open his hips and mirrors rushers effectively. Uses length well and likes to be the aggressor even in pass blocking.
Stood out in 2019 season opener vs. Oklahoma, and did so in front of a press box full of NFL scouts, no less. Nice combine workout with testing numbers all above-average to very good, and positional workout was pretty. Had some dominant reps at the Senior Bowl, including some flashes of nastiness that were not always there in college.
Here’s one nice rep from Mobile, Alabama, where Jones stood up to the power of Syracuse’s Alton Robinson, a mid-round prospect in 2020:
And one more where Jones buries UNC’s Jason Strowbridge, a Senior Bowl standout who nonetheless struggled on this rep.

Downside: For a four-year starter (five years removed from high school), some view Jones as raw, technique-wise. Has some quirky, unorthodox pass sets — stays flat-footed and relies too much on recovery quickness. Takes false steps and wastes movement. Will lean and lunge. Can be dissected by DL ninjas who exploit those things for a living.
Not a refined run blocker yet, too linear and upright at times. Even with strong elements to handwork, improvement is needed as he lowers his guard, misfires on some punches and can stay locked on. Operated mostly out of two-point stances. Not a finished, polished product and will require some extra supervision on the side.
Lumbered out of the gates on the 40 at the combine, 10-yard splits of 1.81 and 18.4 put him in the lower third of combine OT prospects since 1999. Core strength needs work and might need a year or two in an NFL weight program to continue development. Anchor-strength issues show up on tape.
Injuries have caused him to miss time in two of the past three seasons. Faced sub-par pass-rush competition in the AAC. Wide range of one-on-one results at Senior Bowl — some dominant reps, some less-than-impressive ones. Could stand to display nastiness more consistently.
Best-suited destination: Jones could use time to refine his technique, but it was effective enough in college that he could earn a starting spot Year 1 if needed. He’d be best in an inside/outside-zone blocking system, we believe. Scouts have offered a wide variety of opinions on Jones, but there is enough interest league-wide where it would not be a shock if he went early.
Among the teams we think could be interested in his services: the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons.
Did you know: Jones’ father, Bobby, was a high school quarterback and later played and coached semi-pro football with the Houston Buccaneers and Katy (Texas) Cowboys.
They said it: “That I’m a competitor, man. That I compete at a high level. I go out there every single rep and try to win. That’s just my lifestyle. That’s just me. Every single day, I want to win in everything I do. If I raced you to the door, I’m gonna beat you right now. That’s just my thing ... I’m gonna be there every day, ready to work, no matter if it’s a bad day, hard day, I’m going to come back the next day.”
— Jones, at the combine on what he wants to prove to NFL teams
Player comp: Similar to Dion Dawkins, Cam Erving or Ja’Wuan James, Jones enters the NFL with a boom-bust quality to him, but his first-year performance might pale in comparison to what he can do down the road.
Expected draft range: Anywhere from about the 20th to the 50th overall selection.

DT
Edholm Yahoo Sports: 44. TCU DT Ross Blacklock
6-foot-3, 290 pounds
Yahoo Sports draft grade: 5.94

“TL;DR scouting report: Scheme-diverse lineman with pass-rush ability to develop once he refines his handwork.
The skinny: The 3-star Rivals recruit had more than a dozen offers and spurned schools such as Alabama, LSU and Texas A& M to sign with the Horned Frogs in 2016. Blacklock took a redshirt season his first year on campus but made a big impact in 2017, being named Big 12 Co-Defensive Freshman of the Year and to the Freshman All-American team.
Expected to be one of the best interior linemen in the country in 2018, Blacklock’s redshirt sophomore season ended before it began when he suffered a (non-contact) Achilles injury in August practice. Blacklock slimmed down — losing more than 25 pounds — during that lost season and reported to spring practice in 2019 a different player. He was named first-team all-Big 12 last season, making 40 tackles (nine for losses) and 3.5 sacks in 12 starts.
Blacklock, who turns 22 years old in July, declared early for the 2020 NFL draft. He skipped the bench press (but reportedly can do 500-pound reps) at the NFL scouting combine but otherwise competed in every other drill, including a 4.90-second 40-yard dash.
Upside: Disruptive flashes can be found nearly every game. Displays a relentlessness that only a few DL in this class possess. Gets off the snap and is the aggressor more often than not. Can win with quickness and power. Burrows his way through blocks and makes impact felt without stats to back it up.
Athleticism is fascinating. Showed great burst with 1.70-second 10-yard split on second 40-yard dash attempt at combine (1.73 on first attempt). Terrific bend and flexibility — has some dip and wiggle you don’t often see from big men. Can stunt and twist and finish in a hurry.
Worked in 3-3-5 two-gap scheme that limited playmaking opportunities. Faced constant double teams and had success defeating — gets skinny, turns hips and drops shoulder. Maintains gap integrity. Gets low, attacks blockers’ hips and fires off the ball to split doubles.
Watch this beauty of a TFL vs. Baylor.

TCU’s system didn’t ask Blacklock to attack and win single blocks — more of a gap-control defense not conducive to box-score stuffing for DLs. System meant to stop run first, then pick spots to rush the passer. Flashes some quick-strike pass-rush moves — especially club-rip and chop-rip. Has potential to expand his repertoire as an interior rusher.
Blacklock was asked to line up everywhere from a base end to over the nose. Scheme-versatile and technique-diverse player who can upgrade a front at multiple spots. Should win single-blocking matchups at the next level. Hustled to make backside plays and track down screens 10 yards downfield. Regarded as fiery leader and strong competitor.
Downside: Injury history must be carefully considered. He rebounded from 2018 Achilles injury but recurrence is more common with that injury than others, especially in larger players. Weight and conditioning were issues in the past. Even at 2019 weight, effectiveness tended to wane later in games with higher snap counts. Can be run at and worn down (see Iowa State, Texas and Oklahoma games).
Somewhat stumpy frame — shorter arms and smallish hands. Run-stopping ability waxes and wanes — excellent some games, far less impressive others. Needs to better find the ball and recognize blocking schemes before they develop. Can be washed out of plays when he’s unable to disengage quickly or establish leverage.
Might not be asked to do in the NFL what he was in college — could be a technical learning curve and might require some early hand-holding while he develops. Hand work needs improvement — doesn’t shed as well as you’d like to see. Feet get tangled and turned inside. Not a two-gapping block absorber, like he was asked to be at times at TCU.
Needs to learn how to finish more consistently. Countermoves can be slow and predetermined. Stays glued on blocks. Physical upside is there but refinement still lacking. Workout numbers show potential, but hasn’t always played to that level — a little more flash than flavor at this point.
In 26 career games, logged 15.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks but zero forced fumbles, zero fumble recoveries and zero batted passes. Also tended to play a little wildly at times — flagged 12 times in two seasons for mostly preventable penalties (including three personal fouls, three offsides, plus unsportsmanlike conduct, facemask and roughing-the-passer calls). Has shown some immaturity at times, such as the 37 parking tickets he accrued in college.

Best-suited destination: We’d love to see Blacklock land in a stunting/slanting system in the NFL, perhaps as a 3-technique tackle and preferably in a one-gap system that frees him up to showcase his athleticism.
Among the teams that could be interested in his services include the Detroit Lions, New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, New York Giants, Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings.
Did you know: His father, Jimmy Blacklock, is quite the Renaissance man. Following a brilliant college basketball career at the University of Texas (the first African-American player in school history, eventually named to the school’s athletic Hall of Fame), the elder Blacklock also played and coached with the Harlem Globetrotters for more than 20 years — including during the team’s heyday from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s.
Jimmy Blacklock also had a brief but fascinating career as an actor, appearing on TV shows such as ABC’s “Wide World of Sports,” “The Tonight Show,” “The White Shadow,” “The Love Boat,” and “The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island” in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
They said it: “I just try to fill those shoes for him, from our family. I’m super proud of him. … He’s my pops, so I love him to death.”
— Ross Blacklock about his father, at the combine
Player comp: Blacklock enters the league as a similar prospect to what new Raiders DT Maliek Collins has developed into. His peak might be similar to the Packers’ Kenny Clark.
Expected draft range: Late Round 1 to late Round 2”

We lost a great person and scout in Ron Marciniak, who died this morning at age 87. We hired Ron after his coaching days were over and boy did he have an eye for talent. He was the scout who probably caused the only draft room debate in my 30 years with the Cowboys

In the mid-80s, Ron loved this small-school receiver that we had our doubts about because of his slow speed. He ran something like a 4.6 40 and had the slowest short shuttle of all the receivers at the combine that year
But Ron believed in him so much he had him run the 40 at least 6 times in hopes of getting a speed that would help build his case. He not only pounded the table for this receiver but literally got up on it and started shouting things at us like, “I’ve seen this guy nine times …”
He was so convincing that we were all set to take the player in the first round with the 17th overall pick. We so believed he would be wearing a Cowboys uniform that it didn’t even bother us when the 49ers jumped in front of us with a trade the night before the draft.
There was no indication they had any interest in this receiver. Then on draft day, when Wisconsin’s Al Toon went to the Jets at 10 and the Bengals took Eddie Brown out of Miami at No. 13, we felt we were home free. We all started dancing on the table.
And that is the story of how Jerry Rice, the greatest receiver in NFL history, became a 49er ... and nearly a Cowboy.
Rest easy, Ron. We love you and the entire scouting world will miss you.

“Brunner was a two-year letterman at UD from 1978-79 and led the Fightin’ Blue Hens to the 1979 NCAA Division II National Championship with a 38-21 win over Youngstown State in the Zia Bowl.

As a senior he was named first-team American Football Coaches Association All-American after completing 134 of 268 passes for 2,401 yards and a school record 24 touchdowns.

Brunner was drafted in the sixth round of the 1980 NFL draft by the New York Giants, and he played in New York from 1980-83. He helped take the Giants to the 1981 NFL playoffs, throwing three touchdown passes in a wild card win over the Philadelphia Eagles and three more in a semifinal loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

During his career in New York, Brunner completed 482 of 986 passes for 6,121 yards and 28 touchdowns. He later joined the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers in 1984 and played for the Cardinals in 1985. His career NFL passing stats were 512 of 1,046 for 6,457 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Currently, Brunner is a stockbroker on Wall Street with Buckingham Research.

"When you think about Walter Payton, Harry Carson, John Stallworth and so many others, it makes you proud to be associated with Division II," Brunner said. "I was fortunate to get a chance in Division II. Chances are I would have been lost in the numbers had I gone to a bigger school. It's hard to imagine things working out any better for me had I gone to another school.”

Tom Flynn FS W-GB 1986 NYG 1986-1988

Kunda Allentown Morning Call: TOM FLYNN: FROM RAGS TO RICHES 1-22-1987

Start with the bad news - the day in mid-October when Kris answered the phone. It was a call from the Packers' Burt Gustafson, a man Kris didn't know, but knew of. "I had a funny feeling," Kris said last night. "I just knew why he was calling. Tom was out hunting geese at the time. I had to tell him that he was cut. It was a shock to both of us."
Football wives learn to live with the unexpected, but the call from the Packers was shocking because Tom, in his second year as a professional defensive back, had been outstanding as a rookie. He had led Green Bay with nine interceptions, and seemingly was on his way to being a vital part in the Packers' rebuilding process.
Neither Kris nor Tom could pinpoint a reason for the cut. "I guess he just didn't fit into the Packers' make over plans," said Kris. "Gregg was making a lot of changes, cutting people left and right and filling their spots with free agents and whatever bodies he could find."
The mood in the Flynn household didn't get much better for the next few weeks, although Tom did tryout with a number of teams, including the Giants.

Tom Flynn kept himself busy, playing with Hippo's Pub in the flag football league, and, once-in-a-while, dropping in at Pitt Stadium to workout. "He tried to get his mind off the season," Kris said. "But it bothered him."
The good news came on the Monday following Thanksgiving. The Giants' free safety Terry Kinard had banged up his knee two games before and the Giants were concerned that Kinard would be lost for the season. The timing was bad because the Giants were driving toward their first championship of any sort since 1963.
"Just like in a movie," Kris said, "we got a call from Tim Rooney (the Giants' player personnel director). He wanted to know about Tom's availability. Availability? Goodness, he was available from the day the Packers cut him."
By noontime of that Monday, Tom Flynn was en route to Giants Stadium. By the end of the day, he was signed as the backup free safety to Herb Welch.
The story doesn't end here, by any means. Tom Flynn showed his worth almost immediately, and, as any good Hollywood story, it came against the team that had cut him. Oh, yes, Tom Flynn came back to haunt the Packers.
Flynn gained national attention on the Saturday in late December when the Giants, needing a win to hold the home-field advantage for the playoffs, beat the Packers, thanks, in part to a spectacular defensive play by No. 28.
It was only the second game for Flynn in a Giants uniform when he turned hero. Flynn crashedthrough the Packers line, going for a blocked punt. He blocked the punt, all right, but, in true storybook fashion, picked up the loose ball and ran 38 yards for a touchdown, his first ever as a pro.
Payback was sweet. The NFL Today thought so much of that play that it voted it the best play of the year for the special teams.
"That play," said Kris, "made Tom feel that he was a part of the Giants."

Carroll PFR: Giants on the Gridiron 1927

“Although the Giants were well-stocked in the backfield, their real strength was up front. Century Milstead returned from the AFL to pair at tackle with "Stout Steve" Owen, the future Giants coach. Dick Stahlman, a rugged 220-pounder who played for nearly everyone during his long career, was the number one tackle sub, though he could play anywhere on the line. The New York guards were big "Hec" Garvey, the ex-Notre Damer who'd been in the league since 1922, and Al Nesser, the last of the famous clan. Nesser had started playing professionally in 1910, but at age 34 he was still a reliable pro. On the bench were "Doc" Alexander, the coach in '26 and muscular Riley Biggs, another graduate of the AFL. Regular center "Mickey" Murtagh was the smallest interior lineman at 190 pounds but very quick.”

I watched all of Dion Lewis’ 2019 carries yesterday and came away pretty impressed.

He’s a clear upgrade over Gallman, very shifty, runs through contact & can even block a bit. He makes plays instead of just hitting holes. Confident in him starting if Saquon misses any time.

“New York Giants
Key additions: CB James Bradberry, LB Blake Martinez, OLB Kyler Fackrell
Key losses: LB Alec Ogletree (released), QB Eli Manning (retired)
Notable re-signings/tags: DE Leonard Williams (franchise tag)
Bradberry got $14.5 million per season and that’s a lot for a good-not-great cornerback, but the Giants needed help there. Paying more than $10 million per season for Martinez doesn’t seem like the best use of resources. The Williams tag was necessary after a midseason trade with the Jets, and Williams is going to use his leverage to get a big deal. Overall there’s not much to love or hate about this class.
