NFT: Who is still going to work?

Gary from The East End : Admin : 3/24/2020 12:21 pm
How many other "essential personnel" are hanging out on BBI between shifts?

I'm still covering my shifts at the lab, despite the fact that were in a "min safe" configuration with pretty much everyone working from home.

We're running the entire accelerator for one experiment which is, as you might expect, related to COVID-19. Normally we have dozens of experiments going on at the same time.

Even if we shut down the accelerator, I'm still going in to work because we need to keep an eye on things and monitor systems.

So, what are you guys up to?
I work from home as it is

And luckily in a government capacity, so I am working from home and it’s really busy.

I feel extremely lucky though.

If anyone does programming/developing IT work feel free to reach out to me.

but I don't think it's in the "spirit" of the order. I attempted to work from home, but having some issues with my setup, so I'm back at the office. It's a satellite office for my firm, so usually only one other employee here (he's home now). The office building we're in is decent sized, but I haven't seen anyone else yet, so in a way I'm pretty well isolated.

but we have a small IT team and we each have to go in one day a week to support the few people in the office that run into IT issues. My turn tomorrow.

Banking. 50% remote, 50% in office.
Deemed 'essential',
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/24/2020 12:32 pm : link
which is a debate for another day, but whatever. Anyways, I'm working from home this week & back in next week. We got staggering schedules. The one positive is that it seems like a lot of people are working from home so the commute is no big deal & not many people-6 on Friday-in the office.
I work from home

when I'm not traveling anyway, so yeah, business as usual for me (sans travel and also with my kids home too).

my wife is in healthcare, she's working (obviously?).

the list of "essential" professions in Massachusetts is about 80 pages long.

going in - happen to be working on a project where we are constructing a new hospital building which is an expansion of an existing hospital. Something tells me we will be exempt no matter what; even if the new hospital isn't scheduled to be open for at least a year.

i'm in today....we are essential, got to stay home and watch the snow yesterday

Government is shutting down everyone that is non essential tonight at midnight.
My company is not affected as we are involved with the medical, food and chemical industries.

My girlfriend works administration at two hospitals in town so she is working as well.

Streets are pretty much empty. My two kids are going stir crazy at home and it was announced yesterday that the schools will remained closed until at least May 1st. Ugh..... At least my son's college is supposed to start some government mandated online classes so he can finish his semester.
Kinda glad

mattyblue : 3/24/2020 1:13 pm : link
with a friend of mine who works for The Gap Distribution center in Dutchess County NY. Somehow they fall under the essential category, I really don’t understand how shipping fulfilling Old Navy orders is “essential”. Poor guy also hasn’t been feeling well but his doctor didn’t have enough tests and he didn’t fall into any sort of risk category. The Gap won’t let him come in and won’t pay him, or maybe they would let him come in but he doesn’t want to infect anyone if he does have it. I feel bad for him, he can’t make that much money as is but by trying to do the right thing and stay home when he didn’t feel well he’s put himself in a tough position.
My wife and I are both WFH

Walk from home, doing residential designer and drafting. Typical day, here, more or less.
So far one client have been okay to proceed to a point the plans are ready for permitting and construction. Then once things pick back up, they will be good to go. Revising and tinkering with the floor plan and elevation on a second project. No one is hollering for anything, but no one has said stop either. Trying to get plans to a billable stage.

Wife still going into the office as she is HR. Thing is she could be working remotely. She has a office to herself and only one other closed office near by. Thankful to that. Adhering to basica practices and staying to ourselves.

Time to walk the dog and back to it. Not for seeing many new projects in a month or so. Time will tell.

Hang in there y'all.
I am still going to work
NYG07 : 3/24/2020 2:25 pm : link
in downtown Denver. Essential business. We are in the process of getting laptops and dual monitors to work from home but it is taking forever.

On the plus side, there is zero traffic and they shutdown the parking meters for 30 days so I can park a half a block from my building in the middle of the city. Also, out of the 52 stories in my building we are the only group still here and they dispersed us around the open space on the floor until we go remote so I have not been concerned.
There is some debate if my job is "essential"
Mike in NY : 3/24/2020 2:29 pm : link
But where I work everybody has their own office and we have a parking lot in front of the building that belongs to just our office so I am likely more of a risk staying in my 600 square foot apartment and walking the hallways for exercise than I am going to my office.
I sell cars.

Still working, substance abuse counselor in a hospital
j_rud : 3/24/2020 2:36 pm : link
Grateful to be working but its stressful. I suspect as the numbers rise our wing of the hospital will be converted to treat covid patients, in which case Ill be laid off. Have a little money set aside but not a ton, enough for 3 months or so of mortgage/bills. Stressful but in truth its a better position than most. Strange days man, strange days. Stay safe everyone.

Always WFH one or two days per week
TJ : 3/24/2020 2:44 pm : link
Switched to all days from home ~ three weeks ago. I'm still supposed to go in if a system breaks down that needs me to be hands on.
So far no need but if it comes to that I could probably be in and out of the data center without seeing anyone else.

You definitely need to get out of those old 845’s though.

I have been working from home for better part of a year as they have downsized the space in our office and I volunteered to work from home.

So no real change of habits or pace. Business is at times crazy and quiet depending on the hour.

I wish you all well! We are a wonderful community here at the BBI!
I'm seeing patients
rmc3981 : 3/24/2020 3:02 pm : link
but only orthopedic emergencies. Infections and non elective surgeries. Not bringing in any staff. Just the physicians to keep staff safe. God, I hate calling people from the waiting room into a treatment room :)....just kidding....somewhat :) (in truth, not using waiting room so that people aren't around others. They are going right into treatment rooms directly).

I am a cabinetmaker, lucky to have a nice shop in my basement in PA. So things haven't changed much. New construction home I am doing a large bar and wall unit for has no one living there yet so I can come and go to do installation, taking obvious precautions. Some other small projects I can catch up on. Getting material is another story. That is drying up quickly as places close. Will probably be dead in the water in 2-3 weeks. (I know, bad wording there...)

The lab I retired from (semi-conductor/MEMs research) is still open, though, being deemed essential. Don't know how they managed to come up with that designation. The nature of research is that results are years in the making. Nothing that demands staying on for a couple weeks while the world is trying to save itself.
