What's your story about a traffic citation that just didn't seem fair?
Yesterday, took my wife to the grocery store. Got pulled over. Officer was perfectly professional the whole way, did his job. My registration had expired. (My wife does the bills in our house and she is meticulous to a fault. PA sends you a new form to renew, she swears we never got it....anyway...) Still, my fault. But $194?! I thought that was extreme. That's part of it.
The second part is more aggravating because where we live in south central PA, driving is practically a free-for-all. Local police are not allowed to take radar. I am serious. Only state troopers are allowed. We joke that the speed limits around here are whatever the car in front of you is doing. 10-15 over is regular, needless to say, tailgating is also very common. (Side note, I grew up in north Jersey, so Rt 3, the Parkway, 80, were "normal" roads to me.) Last, hand held devices are still allowed in Pa. While texting is technically not allowed, people are on their phones constantly. It's no wonder other states hate Pa drivers.
It's just frustrating to have our officers instructed to collect revenue that is virtually impossible to fight while the rest of the roads are something out of Death Race 2000. Thank you for allowing me to vent a bit. If you have your own story of disproportionate fines or incidents, fire away.
Don’t even get me started on BCS cops
... where I was in a group of cars and everybody was going slightly above the speed limit.
I was in another state, though, and I therefore had an out-of-state license plate... I figure that's why I was the one that got pulled over.
Still, 9 mph over the limit... sheeesh.
You can pull over 80+% of folks on the road for that "crime"
I'm sitting at a stop light on a 2 lane road about to cross a 4 lane road. There's a steep hill as soon as you cross the intersection that you cannot see the oncoming traffic. From dead stop to clearing the top of the hill is no more than 100 feet.
As I crest the hill I'm pulled over by 4 police stationed at the top of the hill along with an older lady who was behind me. I think the speed limit was 25 on the side street but I can see a sign with a 35 mph limit 100 feet up the road.
The problem is I have no idea what my speed was because I had my eyes on the road as I crested the hill as I should have. OK what can I do.
But here's the galling thing. As they were writing our tickets a souped up car is approaching from the other direction at about 60-70 mph. One of the officers stands in the road to flag him down. There's no way this car can stop so at the last minute the officer jumps out of the way and the car screeches down the hill, runs the red light and takes a hard right and proceed to squeal his tires as he runs away. What is the police response. All 4 officers have a great laugh and get back to writing our tickets.
This is long before dashcams and cell phones. A few months later in the same general area I was second in line coming down a hill exceeding the speed limit. The cops waved the car in front of me over but seeing how lazy these a$$holes were last time I kept on trucking. They never came after me.
I'm still pissed about 30 years later.
* Tailgating is almost an every-minute occurrence.
* High Schools & Driving Schools DO NOT teach Pennsylvanians how to merge onto a highway. They either crawl down the ramp at 5 mph or just barrel down and wait to the last possible second to jump into lane often causing other cars to have to make a split second decision.
* Texting and driving is rampant...especially among younger women.
* Pizza delivery cars........ARGHHHHHH
Anyway....have been lucky evading the law to date, but it is correct that speed limits are basically ignored and everyone drives in concert with each other in a group-law-breaking frenzy!
Apparently there is no distinction between 'running' a stop sign and not coming to a full stop.
Pretty sure there was no traffic and I probably rolled with my manual shift :(
My trip to Boston was awesome but the Uber rides was like being on a game show ... "When will we crash?"
He goes writes up the ticket, when he came back, he does his best to avoid pointing his body cam in the direction of my phone on the mount. My court date is supposed to be next month.
Same exact thing happened to me. I was in MD for work for a week. Three weeks later I get a speeding ticket in the mail. $40. Their “proof” was a still photo of my truck taken by the camera. I didn’t even recognize the random street I was supposedly speeding on but they said I was doing 39 in a 25. Its impossible to even fight that. That shit should be illegal

We could swap stories for hours....
Agree on entrance ramps...why do people stop cold when we behind are going to merge onto a 65 MPH road?
Running stop signs...rolling through a stop sign at 10-15 is common. Complete stop? HA!
If you are at a red light, and it turns green...look both ways! At least once a day I see someone barreling through a red light thinking they "made it" on green.
And the texting...cars weaving, changing speeds, and I can't tell you how many times I have gotten screwed at a green light because the jackass in front of me hasn't noticed the light changed, they go, and I coast up to a red light steaming.
We recently had a young girl sadly die in an accident. 17, on her way to school. Hit the back of a school bus loading at 45 mph. She was so involved in her phone that she never saw the lights, the bus, and never applied the brakes.
Why on earth would lawmakers not change the hands free law? I go to NJ to visit family regularly, NJ has only a small fraction of people on their phones compared to PA. It's insane out there, stay well.

are no match for drivers in Boston. The only place where traffic is worse is Rome, Italy. Nobody who owns a scooter in Italy can be more than 30 years old... they must die in bunches.

Insane Uber rides, that may be another thread? Some of those you are truly shaking hands with the devil.
another ticket for expired insurance. My insurance wasn’t expired but I didn’t have the updated card with me.

Seems in a construction zone they can ticket you for speeding based on photo/radar set up. Sent me the ticket/fine in the mail. $40. Doubt it stands up in court but by ticketing out of state drivers who won't contest the $40 fine they have a little money making scheme they can get away with.

I was ticketed at this same location for the same reason. It’s a trap. 35 years of driving and this was 1 of 2 moving violations. Just be cautious leaving Dulles airport.
that operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year round, last summer.
I freaking blew a gasket to see I was issued a speeding ticket in August near a Parochial High School in Queens, about 8 pm at night, on a Sunday!!!!
Seems The City farmed out traffic speeding violations to a private company to install the radar guns and photographing equipment, and the private company rewrote the speed laws...
