NFT: Baseball May 15 or thec4h of July is what I’m hearing

capone : 3/25/2020 8:50 pm
The earlier date will be with no fans Tony Clark must agree the players will play at a discount salary to reflect the fact that there are no game day revenues....God I hope they do it this country could really use the MLB right now
Interesting, appreciate your insight as always

I’m with you, I’d tune in to watch some guys playing in a sandlot right now
Thanks, capone

Jeff Passan was saying today they are considering using the spring training sites in Florida and Arizona to play the games, without fans. This would eliminate much of the travel. Have you heard the same?

Not clear on that .. will ask ... But it makes sense and a lot less travel to… Except the schedule will have to change But they’re gonna have to rewrite the whole damn thing anyway
I dont see

how may 15 is even possible without fans. They're going to need at least 2 weeks to get ready for opening day and that's likely on the very optimistic side.

I'd say June 1st or June 15th is possible, then middle of july they can go from the spring training facilities to the normal stadiums.
may is a bad idea
Dankbeerman : 3/25/2020 9:23 pm : link
june 1st restart spring training.then move a team to the AL(easier to add dh now then take away) no interleague play. No divisions top 4 teams make the playoffs. maybe a Fathers day openning day double header for everyone.
Yeah sorry
capone : 3/25/2020 9:25 pm : link
2 people told me may15/June 1 for no fans Probably trying to create some urgency for Tony Clark to make up his mind...But it makes sense one extra month to play If you go with no fans
It’s going to be like that year (after the strike I think?)
mfsd : 3/25/2020 10:06 pm : link
where spring training started late and was compressed, so starters were still only throwing 3-4 IP the first few weeks of the season to build up

Baseballs been trending to shorter starts/bullpen games anyways recently, they can manage. 26th roster spot for an extra pitcher will help

Is worrying owners re using spring sites. And the whole AL NL thing was a complication from the beginning.
Will MLB
SJGiant : 3/25/2020 10:18 pm : link
Schedule 7 inning doubleheaders like the minor leagues to get games made up? They should have an extra inning shootout like hockey. Home run derby.
Either would be nice.

May 15 isn't going to happen. Too many states & MLB cities will still have bans on large gatherings at that date. Even if there's a treatment by then, it'll take a while to get it into mass production.

4th of July is possible but still unlikely. Same reason.

I think a lot of people don't yet grasp what this pandemic is. though people who are paying attention to the NY metro area are probably getting it by now.

How is that going to work ? are they going to redefine the leagues and divisions so the Florida teams stay in Florida and the Arizona teams stay there ?
Should shoot for June 1
Matt M. : 3/26/2020 1:25 am : link
They can do a 144 game schedule.
empty stadium idea sounds intriguing
larryflower37 : 3/26/2020 5:46 am : link
but if one player ends up with covid-19 it could shut it all down for much longer.
players moving from hotels, bus, etc. for reduced pay is not happening.
July 4th opening day would be pretty cool and reduce the season to 80 games.
I do not think we will see baseball at all
AnnapolisMike : 3/26/2020 7:41 am : link
unless the change in weather kills it off like the flu in April. The US is going to have over 100,000 cases by the end of the weekend and hundreds will be dying each day. I just do not see it. I think we may be lucky to see football.

I tend to agree, but Manfred was sayingcpaat might that he's confident they are going to have season. He said all ideas are on the table and the players are in board. I'm betting that they will play in empty stadiums to start. Then possibly set up a social distancing type situation where they sell much less seats and really spread it out.
Meant " Manfred was saying last night"

.
It’s coming from the very top to play again
Shecky : 3/26/2020 1:07 pm : link
A LOT of pressure from the VERY top.
If they're playing without fans,
JB_in_DC : 3/26/2020 1:43 pm : link
at the spring training facilities, and most the country is stuck at home, it would really be nice to get a healthy dose of day games.
Sounds like empty stadiums is possible,
Mad Mike : 3/27/2020 1:56 pm : link
but something they really want to avoid.

From Passan:
Quote:
The players and league agreed the 2020 MLB season won't begin until:

- There are no bans on mass gatherings that limit the ability to play in front of fans*
- There are no travel restrictions
- Medical experts determine games will not pose a risk to health of teams and fans.

* The caveat agreed to by the players and league is that they will consider playing games at neutral sites instead of home ballparks -- and will consider the feasibility of playing in empty stadiums and just how proper a solution it may be for both sides and especially fans.

Seems weird to call that a "caveat." It's a pretty material difference from his first point, so I don't really understand what that first point really even means. They won't play until they can play in front of fans, except they might play even if they can't play in front of fans?

The players get paid that is my understanding and that is a big wild card and an incentive to rush people back....

No, the players agreed to pro-rated salaries based on when the season starts, subject to a minimum 4% if there's no season (which is being advanced to them now).
