Can't wait to see how Mookie Betts will perform atop the Dodgers lineup? Or how Gerrit Cole fares with the Yankees?
Baseball fans who had their dreams of opening day shattered by the delayed start to the season will be able to get a little bit of that magic back, thanks to the folks at Strat-O-Matic.
The legendary board game company has announced it will be simulating the 2020 MLB season, beginning on the schedule's original opening day, March 26.
Using its unique player ratings and its Baseball Daily game, Strat-O-Matic will play each of the MLB games on that day's schedule and unveil the scores, stats and key game highlights at 2 p.m. ET.
“Like all baseball fans, we are disappointed that the season won’t be starting on time, but we hope this day-by-day simulation will provide a fun, viable substitute for the time being,” said Strat-O-Matic founder Hal Richman.
Fans, former players and media members will be asked to help select the teams' pitching rotations and lineups, the company says. The results will be promoted on its website, strat-o-matic.com, and its various social media platforms.

Mt friends and I would play for hours upon hours, setting up leagues and playing seasons. I still have my games from the late 1970s.
Can you tell me more about that?

They have a pretty robust online setup. You pay a fee for a team, usually $20 for a season, with discounts for multiple seasons.
You choose from a variety of different league options - 2019, 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s, all time greats, etc.
Leagues are 12 or 24 teams. 2 draft options: Option 1, live draft (which is infrequent, bc you’re usually playing against managers from around the country, hard to make timing work), or Option 2, you fill out a draft card with your desired players, and the computer matches it up against other teams draft cards and calculates who gets who.
There’s a free agent waiver period, then league starts and the computer plays a 3 game series against a different opponent every night. You set lineups, rotation, assign bullpen roles, and can set strategy with things like pinch hitter preferences, aggressive or conservative baserunning, etc.
I usually play the 1980s version, as that’s the era from when I still have the back of baseball cards burned into memory. Got my butt kicked by experienced managers for a few seasons, but have won a few championships the last couple years too
There’s more to it, you can check out Strat-O-Matic online to read more about it. I enjoy it, basically spend 15 minutes every morning checking how my team did, making lineup changes, free agent pickups, etc.
Fun outlet for any old stat geeks like me!
He had a football one where he would write postgame writeups for each game like a small newspaper article.

For the online game, yes, and I assume the 2020 simulation will as well.
Each players cards has a “roll” that results in an injury. The length of injury is generally based on how many plate appearances/innings pitched a player had the prior season.
For example, a guy with 300 plate appearances is twice as likely to get injured, and for twice as long, as a guy with 600 plate appearances.
As for the 2020 simulation, I wonder if they will factor in things like whether currently injured guys can start the season if it started today (looking at you, Judge and Stanton)
Yeah, I've been playing online since they were hosted by Sporting News and now still on their own hosted 365 platform.
Baseball is a lot of fun - especially the ATG series (although the mystery cards are lame, IMO). Football isn't quite as enjoyable, IMO. It just doesn't translate as well.

That’s fantastic. If any BBI’rs want to do a league while we weather the storm, I’m down!
I'd love to do it - let's see if we get more people interested

I had that exact same game! Haha!
topped the New York (AL) club by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
Baltimore came up with 2 runs in the 7th inning. Both teams ended up with 8
hits on the afternoon. The winning pitcher was Miguel Castro(1-0) who
allowed no runs in 1 inning. Castro was helped out by Mychal Givens who
recorded his 1st save. Adam Ottavino(0-1) was charged with the loss in
relief.

Nice what's your handle on there? Mine is cslaw3239.
I actually prefer the mystery card games, it's frustrating but IMO also an equalizer for everyone - not matter how good a manager is, you're subject to the luck of the draw with your mystery cards.
I agree about football, I've looked at it but can't get myself to commit to a season

Just sent you a PM on the SOM board (which I honestly didn't even realize still existed until this morning).
