Not sure if posted, but was told about a new FA signing

Lou in SJ (formerly J.Lohr) : 3/26/2020 12:43 pm
I was told by Austin Johnson Sr., that his son Austin Jr. (Tenn Titans) player is joining the GIANTS. He went to St. Augustine Prep in South Jersey, played at Penn St. I was at his draft party a few years ago. Just wanted to pass that along to the corner forum.
according to the Titan's website
gidiefor : Mod : 3/26/2020 12:48 pm : link
he is a 6'4" 314 lb Defensive Tackle -- 25 years old -- 4 year pro
Found his bio on the Titans website

Seems like a depth/camp body move.

Thanks for the info!

Former 2nd round pick but never really made an impact with the Titans. Largely considered a bust by their fan base.
Ties to our new DL coach?

I watched him and his sister grow up.

Very good people. I haven't seen any ethernet traffic on this, so take it for what it's worth.
Here's his draft profile and a quote from Mayock

Quote:
DRAFT ANALYSIS:
"He's a natural fit for a 3-4 base defense team, which is what Tennessee is. He has power and movement skills. When his pad level is low, he is an explosive football player. This is a big, powerful dude." -- Mike Mayock

Any word on Daren Bates or Austin Johnson potentially being brought back?

“Quiet on both fronts, to this point on two unrestricted free agents that the Titans let hit the market. Johnson felt like a long-shot to return but may be worth a flier on a one-year deal if the price is right. After the Casey trade, Tennessee’s defensive linemen are Da’Quan Jones, Jefferey Simmons, Matt Dickerson and Isaiah Mack. Johnson may be worth it just to have another body in the mix.

Bates’ garners legitimate respect from both the locker room and his coaching staff as a special teams captain and hype man. Unfortunately, the presence of sixth-round pick David Long, Jr. and the cost effectiveness of another draft pick likely see Bates as the odd man out.”

round draft picks routinely get second chances with new teams. Why not? This is part of the second wave of FA, including McCoy, Lewis, Coleman, Fleming, and Askew-Henry. None of these guys are guaranteed a roster spot, although Fleming has the best chance.
Affected by Nashville Tornado
Defenderdawg : 3/26/2020 1:05 pm : link
According to Ben Jones, Johnson and his family are OK physically and weren’t at home when the storm hit, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.

“He was one of the first guys we reached out to,” Jones said of Johnson. “Knowing his wife and our wives are close and we know that’s rough. I’m just happy he’s safe; they weren’t at home at the time, so that was great news. But I know we’ve offered him places to stay, showed him places he can rent, but we just want to be there for him because I know it’s tough. … When you come home and don’t have a place to go and all your valuables are in there, we wanted to make sure we’ve got something on his roof so he didn’t lose his valuables that were in there.”

Amazing where the information can flow from. Awesome!

Hey, maybe a change of scenary and coaching could bring something out of him and give us a nice, young, experienced DT to either put in the rotation or keep as depth.
Thanks Lou

I like this signing. The reward is definitely worth the risk.I'd be surprised if Johnson is getting big money.
Very solid...

Wonder if this signing may signal the Giants

Either trading someone like Tomlinson or moving on from someone like Tomlinson next year?

why would they get rid of Tomlinson? -- Tomlinson is a very good player and still under his rookie contract which is very team favorable.

Spot on ... he would have played 2 years, 2014-15, his soph & JR seasons under Coach Chaos ... right now, he’s competition against Slayton for the 6th DL slot.
He just posted on his twitter site in the last 24 hours

I don't think they would trade Tomlinson, nor should they. But they may not be able to resign him next year when he is a FA, especially if they sign Williams to a long term deal. Slayton and Johnson are low cost attempts to try and find his potential replacement.
He was in the rotation at Tennessee....
MOOPS : 3/26/2020 1:56 pm : link
and played in all 16 games the last three years. That's a good DL down there.
Sounds like a solid pickup, a little under the radar but one that could pay dividends.

I sure as heck don't want to unload Tomlinson. I was just wondering why we would sign a DT and speculated it's the first of a pair of orchestrated moves. Maybe it's Williams? Who knows? Just throwing out a theory.
This is a solid gamble
Jay on the Island : 3/26/2020 2:16 pm : link
A former 2nd round pick that is likely being paid close to the minimum. He could be a solid backup for Tomlinson.
A couple of things
YANKEE28 : 3/26/2020 2:21 pm : link
about Austin Johnson.

When he was in high school in New Jersey, he was also an outstanding All Conference basketball player. Pretty impressive athlete at 6'4" and over 300 pounds.

He has a Twitter account. It is AJohn15.

If anyone knows how to post a picture on BBI, his picture shows him and his wife Danika each wearing a Coach Chaos T Shirt.

I really like this signing.
Good

The Giants are signing DT Austin Johnson, per source. A second-round pick in 2016, Johnson spent the past four seasons with the Titans (13 starts). NJ native's position coach at Penn State: New Giants DL coach Sean Spencer.
Very good depth
Breeze_94 : 3/26/2020 2:56 pm : link
Still young, scheme fit, local guy. Was an early 2nd round pick in 2016 so definitley has some talent and upside as a rotational piece. DL is looking like a major strength- LW, Big Dex, Dalvin, Hill, McIntosh, and now Johnson. Can use later round picks to take gambles on other areas of the roster (Skill players, LB’s)
Tomlinson could be traded during the year
BigBlueNH : 3/26/2020 3:03 pm : link
Which they might do if they decide, with LW and Lawrence on board, they don't intend to re-sign him next year. Wouldn't happen until we are out of it. And also assumes we have LW signed to a multi-year contract. (I like Tomlinson alot, but what they will be paying LW and Lawrence may preclude signing him to a $10M/yr contract if he plays well this year. Particularly if they want to keep Lawrence at the end of his rookie deal.)

...my guess is he'll compete with Hill for a spot in the DL rotation.

Good post, Austin Johnson may be a cheaper option if Tomlinson's contract demands exceed the Giants offer.

I think they keep both. Hill's roster spot is safe it's McIntosh that has to worry if the Giants plan to keep only 5 DL. I think they decide to keep 6 this year with the extra two roster spots.
I would be concerend
Pete in MD : 3/26/2020 3:20 pm : link
that he didn't see the field more as a 2nd round pick but he played the same position in their defense as Jurrell Casey, who went the Pro Bowl five years in a row.

Not really though. Johnson is more of a NT and Casey played 3-tech for them. Johnson has been backing up DaQuan Jones for the past two years.
I like it
Lines of Scrimmage : 3/26/2020 3:52 pm : link
Competition and depth. Giants were pretty soft against the run prior to Williams coming on board.

We can use some of the later picks on potential (Wr's) so fill as much depth/comp. as possible with players showing they belong on a roster.
