NGT: If you are Billy B, what do you do for a QB?

Ivan15 : 3/27/2020 11:01 am
Go with what you have and take a beating for one season?
Get Winston, Dalton or someone else?
Trade up and draft one?

I would try to get Dalton who I think could get the Pats deep into the playoffs. He has been stuck with a bunch of “me first” losers for years.

I think Winston hit his ceiling and won’t get any better. His attitude was always bad and won’t change.
Roll with Stidham.

I think they draft someone this year
Jim in Forest Hills : 3/27/2020 11:05 am : link
to compete with Stidham mand any vet they bring on.
Cam for this year
Biteymax22 : 3/27/2020 11:06 am : link
Then make a decision if Stidham is a long term answer, if not, draft someone in the late first early second to groom.
exactly what he's doing
GiantsLaw : 3/27/2020 11:11 am : link
Start Hoyer to begin the year as the QB to follow up Brady, and relieve the pressure off Stidham. Start Stidham a few games in for the rest of the year to see if he's the guy. If not, I'll assume they're record is poor and they draft a QB high next year.
Compounding the prob is a lack of quality rcvrs and short off season.
Spider56 : 3/27/2020 11:27 am : link
Stidham looked decent in preseason last year but even Tommy boy struggled with his receivers running the wrong routes and not adjusting to his reads. Given the short or non existent off season a new QB will have I can’t see BB giving up anything of value to get a QB, so an experienced FA will be his best bet, preferably someone who has some knowledge of McDaniels offense.
If he does opt for a trade, maybe he’d consider bringing Brussett back from the Colts ... that would be as plug and play as possible.

I would love to see Belichick get his hands on Rosen
Milton : 3/27/2020 11:45 am : link
But Dolphins won't trade him to Patriots and aren't likely to simply release him even if they draft a QB with their first pick.

Well, Belichick is used to hard working, tough, student of the game at QB so that should work out great.
They will draft a QB high
BigBlueNH : 3/27/2020 11:51 am : link
maybe Fromm or Eason, to compete with Stidham. Prob have an open comp in camp with those 2 youngsters and Hoyer, hoping one of the 2 youngsters shows enough to earn the job, but ready to roll with Hoyer if they don't. But they may skip taking one in the draft, as the Boston press claims they are very high on Stidham. I think it highly unlikely they bring in a vet with starting experience like Cam or Winston or Flacco.
My bet is that he will sign one of the FA vets
ZogZerg : 3/27/2020 12:17 pm : link
once their price comes down or he will trade for Andy.
I could see
crackerjack465 : 3/27/2020 12:34 pm : link
Jake Fromm in rnd 2 in a trade up, if he's still there around pick 16.
IMO
pjcas18 : 3/27/2020 12:45 pm : link
it's Stidham's job to lose.

I think they may bring in a veteran backup (besides Kessler or Hoyer), and maybe will say it's an open competition, but I think they want Stidham to be the opening day starter.

He's also used to winning and Cam's the only veteran out there who's done that.
Did Mariotta sign with a team?
Coach Red Beaulieu : 3/27/2020 1:00 pm : link
Also look at Hill from NO and McSorley from Ravens if available.

Stidham looked like human garbage the one time I saw him play.

Or sit and wait for Jalen Hurt or some other Tier 2 QB.

Mariota is with the Raiders.

Stidham threw four passes.

Here is the latest from today;

Quote:
A handful of names have been mentioned with regard to the New England Patriots' quarterback opening since Tom Brady departed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the AFC East side appears to be moving ahead with an in-house replacement.

NBC Sports Boston's Tom E. Curran noted the Patriots "haven't wavered" on plans to move forward with second-year signal-caller Jarrett Stidham.

The 23-year-old leads a depth chart that is filled out by Cody Kessler and Brian Hoyer.

According to The Athletic's Stephen Holder, the Patriots and Indianapolis "engaged in discussions" about a Hoyer deal before the 34-year-old was released by the Colts.
Billy B.?
LBH15 : 3/27/2020 1:16 pm : link
I would try to make a deal for Ricardo Rincon.

I didn't consider Rosen. He was very unimpressive with Miami. I didn't think he had even 1 good quarter in the games he played.

Regarding Newton, Belichick may take on a reclamation project or home improvement project, but I don't think he would bother with Newton's injuries, ego and head case all at once.

I think he could win with Dalton.

.

BB won't want to deal with Newton's 'baggage'.
I doubt very much he brings him in, plus he
has had about three shoulder surgeries.
Passing a physical recently doesn't mean that much
to other teams, they would want their own doctors
to look at him, can't really do that at the moment.
I'd look into Cam Newton.

If healthy, he's the best of who's available, and by quite a bit. Granted, the "if healthy" is a big question, and they'd also have to figure out how much $$$ he commands.

Every veteran suggestion fails to consider that the Patriots are already eating $13M in dead money for Brady. Any veteran that is worth a damn such as Cam isn't signing for peanuts. Even if they could secure Cam for $15M/yr, they aren't going to commit $30+M in cap space to the position. If they were going to do that, they would have just retained Brady.
Never underestimate the Machiavellian nature of BB and his

franchise's owner Kraft. They can afford to take the long view.

They tank to the tune of 1-15, or whatever it takes to have the worst record in the league in 2020, and then draft Trevor Lawrence 1st overall in the 2021 draft.

Who but Sunshine can replace the GOAT?

And BB wins another 4-5 SB trophies.
Cam?
BlueLou'sBack : 3/28/2020 12:15 am : link
I can't even imagine BB sitting in the same room with that douche bag. Or laying out Cam money for a guy with a busted wing and a closet full of scarves and fedoras.

Thank you, agreed. And Cam can't play football anymore.
