The 1986 season and team is my favorite one of all time. Thanks Eric for the article. Brought back wonderful memories during a most difficult time.
The 1986 season was so cathartic.

When you look at Super Bowls XXV, XLII & XLVI, those were clearly the better and more competitive games that weren't decided until the very end of the fourth quarter, but Super bowl XXI is still my favorite. There's nothing like winning it for the first time.

ages. The only thing we used to hear about was the good old days. Now they’re talking about us.”

And now we are there again, trying to emeerge from another dark age. History indeed repeats itself.

For me personally, the weird thing about this season was I was a nervous wreck until got past either the Bears or Redskins in the playoffs. I didn't think we matched up well with the Bears and I thought the Redskins were the second best team in the NFL that year. Even though we trailed at the half, I was strangely calm during XXI. You could just feel the dominance building before it was reflected on the scoreboard by the late 3rd quarter.

I wasn't worried about the Redskins at all, I knew the Giants had their number. The team that scared me was the 49ers - I didn't like the fact that the Giants had to play them in the Divisional round. I couldn't sleep at all the night before that game. I was nervous about the Broncos in the Super Bowl too. Their defense gave the Giants fits in the regular season game. If George Martin didn't make that incredible INT return for the TD the Giants would have lots that game.
That was of course a great season and a wonderful feeling

that will always be cherished by this fan. Strangely, when Danelo made that kick in OT of the ‘81 finale to give us our FIRST playoff spot (with a Jets win the next day over the Pack which I was extremely confident would happen) in 18 years, I admittedly cried with relief and joy. I was more emotional about that win and circumstance than I was with XXI, as glorious as that was.
this was excellent!!!

1986 was one of those meant-to-be seasons

Like '85 with the Bears or '84 with the Niners. Sure there were a few tense moments, but it was one of those years where everything broke exactly right. Call it overconfidence, but my football-watching buddies and I were extremely relaxed throughout the playoffs. You could just tell the Giants were more prepared, more physical, and more confident than anyone they faced.

Those types of seasons don't happen often, and a lot of teams have yet to have one of them. I'm just glad we got ours.

I honestly felt like Jerry Rice fumbling the ball in the first quarter was the spell that had been haunting the Giants for nearly 30 years was finally broken. That was the kind of thing that used to happen TO the Giants. Now the football gods were on our side.

the day after the Minnesota game. This was a fun one to read about again.

Parcells post-game quote said it all: "the race is on, it started today."

nothing like the first time
They had such a good team that season and when

Simms and his rag tag wide receivers finally started showing up late in the season then that made them a great team and rolled.

Was there in person at a lot of those games that year including all of the playoffs so reading that was like memory lane.

Special year.
