Not as fun to be reminded that this team found itself with big deficits early on a near-weekly basis. Seems like almost every game saw them down 10 or 14 early. Same thing with down and distance. 2nd and more than 10 felt like the norm.
Thanks for posting. Daniel Jones did a lot of good things in his rookie year!
Question:
If he doesn't make appreciable strides in 2020 regarding his sack-strip-fumbles, will he be our starting QB in 2021?
It isn't just about the fumbles. BBI has been preaching the past few years that a mobile QB would negate a subpar OL. Yet, now that we have a mobile QB, he took an alarming amount of sacks. 38 sacks in only 13 games started in which he lost nearly 300 yards (295 yards to be exact). BBI has moved the goalposts, now, saying that once the OL is fixed those problems will go away. But we have been fixing the OL for nearly a decade.
For all the good that DJ has done, there was plenty of awful including leading this team on a record setting losing streak despite Shurmur saying that DJ gave us the best chance of winning. If DJ doesn't correct his faults, then it will lead to more losing. It will be a tough sell to ownership by Dave that his vision is working when we will likely be picking in the top 10 yet again. Dave has earned a pass initially as he inherited a shit roster. But this is his team now. The cap has been cleared and terrible contracts are his responsibility. These players need to win or else there will be a new regime and Judge won't be married to any holdovers.
Thanks for posting and I am hopeful DJ learned and takes his game to the next level in 2020. It seemed outside of the Washington game he was always playing from behind and trying to do too much. He’s our future so let’s fix the D and allow him to grow.
He was better, as a rookie, than either Mayfield or Darnold was in their 2nd years. And that was playing behind a sieve of on OL (not that the Jets' line was any better). And that OL lead to the vast majority of the fumbles as well. From an "arm talent" perspective he did things I thought were really impressive. I couldn't be happier with him and I, like many, was shocked by the pick when it happened.
is how much leakage and push the OL gives up and so quickly. A lot of those passes had to be thrown, whether the target was open or not. And the Tight Ends are useless as well, even when they supported one of the Tackles.
Awful blocking line that, as of now, has only gotten worse.
Say a prayer for Draft Day that this nonsense stops soon.
Watching this reminded me how incredibly bad our defense was ... the offense played well enough to win a few more games, but the defense was atrocious.
But 25+ turnovers has got to stop. I still think of coughlin being able to fix Barber so quickly, but everyone on this board that comments about "Oh he can just magically fix the issues" I'm not buying it. As great as he has played I am still very concerned.
But if anyone says that they expected Jones to play as well as he did last season then they are full of shit. The way he kept battling with such a depleted receiver corps has to get most fans excited. Let’s not forget the injury to Barkley and Engram plus the poor play of the offensive line.
Great quarterbacks elevate the players around them and that is exactly what Jones did. I expect Jones to take a big step forward with an improved offensive line and coaching staff along with a new weapon or two added in the draft. Now if Engram and Shepard can just stay healthy this offense could be a top 10 unit.
Many of his fumbles are rookie mistakes and the obvious by-product of a bottom 5 OL. I mean, this was Duke 2.0 for him and possibly worse!
Agreed, players always talk about the speed of the NFL game vs college. That’s where the strip sack fumbles are coming from. He will be fine, smart guy, doesn’t get rattled. He hasn’t even played a full NFL season yet (as a starter). QB’s need a few years. Eli didn’t hit his stride until his third or fourth year, and had a much better supporting cast to start his career. Both offensively and on defense.

Let's not blame ALL of Jones's fumbles on the OL. Off the top of my head I recall two fumbles he had while running... which had nothing to do with the OL.
Jones needs to secure the ball when he's running and show more pocket awareness in the passing game.

But to answer your question, no, not with this coach. Turn overs lead to loses....
If we put the right OL around Jones and give him a big WR, the offense can be really good.

He's our next franchise QB.

Jones is taking his time to read the defense and change the protections...maybe a few audibles too.

always snapping the ball with 1 or 0 seconds left on the clock?

Not sure if that's true, don't look like was doing a lot Manning'ing out there, seemed like Shermur was getting the plays out late.
I hear you, but the way he constantly celebrated/showboated regardless of the horrible season or a decided game rubs me the wrong way.
I can see it when making a clutch play that decides a game, but sheesh.

Draft defense.
