not that you can really spoil a sitcom, but if you're like Frank Costanza and like to go in cold be prepared.
This season started off a little weak IMO.
The first couple episodes seemed to me like Larry had a couple distinct vignettes he wanted to weave together, seemingly without cohesion. Funny, Larry David moments, but meh, not special.
The season wound up on a high note. the last 3 or 4 episodes were comedy gold.
The John Hamm episode may be the best in a few seasons.
And The Spite store was also an instant classic.
The entire Mocha Joe season long story line was genius and peak Larry David.
The only negative I have is Richard Louis. I think he was good in this role, but he seems unnecessary and almost like Larry David is giving his buddy a job as a favor.
Did anyone else watch?
Im not even trying to make a joke or be mean here, but every time I see him it reminds me of the Nazi sympathizer in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade who "chose...poorly".
The MAGA hat bit early on was funny. Jon Hamm acting like Larry was great. Setting Leon up as manager of Larry’s Lattes was funny too. Susie is still hilarious.
One thing that stood out more to the downside is both Jeff and Richard Lewis look a lot older and unhealthy now. Not that they were ever models of good health, but Jeff looked like he might keel over and die mid episode.
I also didn’t really buy Vince Vaughn as a Funkhauser. But that’s nitpicking, overall a strong season.
Curb segment - ( New Window )
Jay, I’d forgotten about that episode. So funny!
Yes, it was Sunday March, 22. I just caught up though, and thought I'd start a thread.
Richard Lewis Health and CYT - ( New Window )
For the Richard haters:
I meant sightless... - ( New Window )
I hope he continues to do more.
A lot of instant classics from this season - Maga hat, good looking section in the restaurant, entire jon hamm episode, mocha joe, spite stores, the wedding in mexico guessing the weights, richard lewis and the taffy, jeff getting too excited about his trip on the drop off, lawyer with the fake fruit, probably some others i'm forgetting too.
I dont like Richard Lewis but I find him ok with Larry. I thought Vince Vaughn was completely useless. Jon Hamm was great. Timothy Olyphant was ok, not particularly good or bad. JB Smoove was great as always.
And when I watch Curb (this season especially - which it seemed like he was in more than usual), I can see Curb plots actually being Larry David in real life. Just from this season, I can see him buying his wife's sister a house (now ex-wife), I can see him opening a store out of spite, etc.
I don't buy Richard Lewis, with a net worth of $5M (roughly) being a mansion and Bentley guy. Maybe he is, who knows, but I see Beverly Hills/Hollywood that level of net worth being very mediocre. Larry David with his half a billion dollar net worth - seems legit with most of the plots being realistic. Not that being realistic matters, but like i said I can believe this IS Larry David - even more as someone who watched all the Seinfeld seasons.
So, it just seemed to me that Larry gave his buddy a job.
I also agree on Vince Vaughn and I'm usually a Vince Vaughn fan, just thought he, like Lewis, was unnecessary.
I disagree on Jeff Greene (Jeff Garlin) - he is awesome and I don't think he looked like he was near death or in bad shape - other than how he was acting - in a coupe episodes he was playing a role, I think he looked like he looks. Same as on the Goldbergs.
btw Ted Danson was also great this season. He had some really good moments.
As Exit mentioned above, LD is out of ideas.
Suzy is great too, you just wait for her to get set off by something "fuck you Larry, get the fuck out" she goes from calm to get the fuck out in a seconds. Always deserved too.
I liked the cameos for the other spite stores.
And Leon nails every scene he's in.
I was never the biggest Funkahauser fan. I always saw him as Super Dave Osbourne from Letterman appearances and never reconciled it with Marty Funkauser. But I didn't dislike him and he was good in the role, just never felt like he had to be there or the show would suffer, so I don't miss him, and I felt like Vince Vaughn was unnecessary.
Best season imo was the adoption. When he goes to Arizona and becomes a gentile. Classic.
I agree with most in that Richard Lewis offers nothing, and he looks like a voodoo effigy of himself these days. I don't even think Leon is too funny, though I realize I'm in the minority on that one.
Even with the content not quite what it used to be and the shtick decidedly contrived, the show is still more entertaining for me than most anything else.
And Leon nails every scene he's in.
I can't seem to help but laugh at everything that dude says.
"Pussy tea. The taste of pussy without the commitment."
I loved his scene in front of Mocha Joes trying to drum up business..."hey, im Ted Danson...remember me...Cheers?..Becker"
Nobody does.
But he always brought the yay.
;)
