I have lost some tax files, due to a new install. Anyone know if I can recover them? Recovery Program? Reinstall Tax software? I'm I completely shit out of luck?
is the software TurboTax?

Is so, it usually puts the install in a new folder and it should find the previous years files when you start.

H&R block software
Did you lose the whole computer drive?

If so, recovering files from a fried drive is hit or miss.

But if you just uninstalled tax software, that shouldn’t have touched the data file. The data files are stored separately from the program files, usually in the Documents directory or a sub folder.
Not sure

when I clicked on the app it said this that it has been changed or moved.
Did it install in a new/different directory?

Maybe they still exist under an old directory?

Also - if Windows computer check your Recycle Bin.
Your tax data file is probably somewhere on your drive

If this were Turbo Tax, your data file would have the filename extension .tax2016 or .tax2017, so the whole filename for Joe Schmoe's tax return would be for example Joe Schmoe 17.tax2017. Since this is H & R Block, I don't know what their file naming convention is but you should be able to call their support and find out. Hopefully they can walk you through the whole process if recovering your data, but if they can't, at least find out what the filename extension is.

You can then search for that file on your Windows drive. You should then be able to open up your tax software with that specific file.
This is the at least the second question like this on BBI in a week.

Unfortunately when you install one copy of Windows over another, it torpedoes many of your applications and application preferences. Your data should still be there on your drive, but depending on the application you are going to have to do some hoop jumping to get access to it back.
Maybe the link below will help

Finding H&R Block data file on your hard drive - ( New Window )
If you just did a new install

Try looking in C: -> Windows.old

I can't help you with the specific location in that folder, but it is where data is kept after an install.
file extensions are .t18, for example
