NJ.com’s Rosenblatt on proposed trade between us & Miami

Big Blue '56 : 3/30/2020 2:16 pm
Not sure of what to think about it. Regardless, a possible decent discussion of this.

Quote:

The biggest question remains what happens after the top two picks. Who between the Chargers and Dolphins will trade up to draft a quarterback, whether that’s Oregon’s Justin Herbert or Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa? Will the Giants or Lions be willing trade partners to help them out?

That will be answered soon enough.

In the meantime, here’s our latest mock draft of the first round.

1. Cincinnati Bengals: QB Joe Burrow, LSU. There’s no chance the Bengals actually let him slip by and trade back. Right?

2. Washington Redskins: EDGE Chase Young, Ohio State. Ron Rivera is strangely comfortable with Kyle Allen if Dwayne Haskins doesn’t work out. Adding another QB into the mix seems unlikely.

3. Detroit Lions: CB Jeff Okudah, Ohio State. After trading Darius Slay, the Lions signed Desmond Trufant, but that’s not enough, especially since Okudah is probably the best player available here.

** TRADE **

Dolphins get: Giants first-round pick (No. 4), fifth-round pick (No. 150) and seventh-round pick (No. 248), 2021 sixth-round pick

Giants get: Dolphins first-round pick (No. 5), second-round pick (No. 56), fourth-round pick (No. 141) and 2021 fourth-round pick

***

4. Miami Dolphins (via Giants): QB Justin Herbert, Oregon. The Dolphins have to compete with the Chargers’ desire for a quarterback, too, and the Giants are in the sweet spot. It’s a lot to give up for one slot, but they might have to pony up to stave off Los Angeles. This is just a guess, but with the lack of medical testing or private workouts with Tua Tagovailoa due to the coronavirus, it wouldn’t be surprising if a team fell more in love with Herbert.

5. New York Giants (via Dolphins): OT Tristan Wirfs, Iowa. Dave Gettleman has never traded back in the first round before so it’s always a risk projecting him to change his nature. Still, if the Giants were ever going to trade back to accumulate more picks, this is the year to do it especially with offensive line being their biggest need and three potential studs (Wirfs, Mekhi Becton, Jedrick Wills) on the board. Wirfs is an athletic freak with the versatility to play left tackle, right tackle or guard. He’ll start right away

no brainer if they can do that
It's an interesting trade
TrueBlue56 : 3/30/2020 2:27 pm : link
It will all depend on how these other teams value the quarterbacks and how aggressive they will be to trade up for one of them. It will be nice if we are sitting at 4 with the chargers and dolphins both jockeying to get one of them.

I would make the trade with miami even if it meant taking less as it assures of getting whoever we would have drafted at 4 while still picking up more draft picks.

It will be real interesting to see how it will all play out especially with teams unable to attend pro days or have personal visits
Yeah, picking up a 2nd and 4th THIS YEAR
Big Blue '56 : 3/30/2020 2:27 pm : link
to move down just one spot and STILL have a chance at your guy, is really a no-brainer now that I think about this further.
Agreed
Coach Red Beaulieu : 3/30/2020 2:31 pm : link
we don't have to ask for the moon to drop down one spot.

Now will this sweeten other offers?
Wills instead of Wirfs
Big Blue Hokie : 3/30/2020 2:31 pm : link
Swap out for Wills and this is the ideal scenario.
if this scenario happened
Giantsfan79 : 3/30/2020 2:31 pm : link
I'd hope the Giants tried like hell to trade the 5th pick to a team that wants to leap San Diego to get Love or Tua.
Getting a #2 this year is the key
JonC : 3/30/2020 2:32 pm : link
and I hope they think Wirfs is a RT, at least.

Your preference, Wirfs or Wills?
This scenario is unlikely
BigBlueNH : 3/30/2020 2:41 pm : link
If Miami and the LAC both want a QB, (or even if one of them does and is concerned the other might), they're gonna be talking to Detroit about moving up. They can't assume the other won't move up to #3. And Detroit would most likely to be able to get Okudah at 5 or 6, so should be willing to move down. The only way this happens is if Detroit is stuck on Okudah and doesn't want to even take the chance that the Giants grab him. I think they will agree that that is not likely.
Move back one spot,
MOOPS : 3/30/2020 2:41 pm : link
still get your guy AND pick up a second rounder? Sign me up.
The ONLY reason Miami would do this
David B. : 3/30/2020 2:47 pm : link
Is if they're CERTAIN someone's trading with the Giants to jump over them. If they DON'T think that's happening, and given DG's track record of never trading down, they could just sit tight and watch the Giants NOT draft a QB, and take Tua at 5.

If Miami absolutely must have Tua, they make the deal. But if they have balls, they could bet (fairly safely, IMO) that once again DG won't trade down (or at least not very far).

Then it's a chess match.
Could DG have an actual offer from a team lower than Miami that he would name on the phone to the Miami GM?

Could DG bluff Miami into thinking he has an offer from a team lower than Miami (that he doesn't name). And would Miami buy it?

Does any of that sound like DG to anyone here?

It doesn't to me.

That 56 pick would be like an oasis
flycatcher : 3/30/2020 2:47 pm : link
in vast desert that separates picks 36 and 99.
Like it except for the pick
jeff57 : 3/30/2020 2:47 pm : link
Wills or Simmons, nor Wirfs.
Nothing happens till we're on the clock
GiantsRage2007 : 3/30/2020 2:51 pm : link
And when we are DG should call Mel Kiper to announce the Giants are offering #4 to the highest bidder. LOL
Disagree with David B
BigBlueNH : 3/30/2020 2:53 pm : link
I don't think the team trading up has to be CERTAIN another team is trying to jump them to get a QB. There is no rule, written or unwritten, that the Giants have to tell the team talking to them whether they have another offer on the table and what it is. All DG has to say is: "We're talking to other teams. If you want the pick, make an offer." Regardless of what you think about DG, I'm sure he's smart enough to know this.

If they get a 2nd round pick for moving back a spot and a higher 4th, run to the podium for Simmons. We can get ER and OL in the 2nd round, the OL with first round grades not worthy of a top 5 pick. Simmons, Okwara and Jones/Jackson/Cleveland would be ideal.
While on the surface, this is a good trade for the Giants...
Danny Kanell : 3/30/2020 3:01 pm : link
I think if we ultimately trade with Miami, it's because there is legitimate competition for the Giants' pick. If there wasn't, Miami would just stay put. Because of this, I think we would net more, possibly much more. That 2nd could/should be one of their other firsts.
See what all the youth 1 year older on D
MeadowlandsMike : 3/30/2020 3:08 pm : link
Does with a new DC and the new vets brought in.

I think IF there is competition between Miami and one of Chargers or Panthers we can do BETTER THAN 56. We can probably get their early 2nd at 36 or even their late 1st @26. They have 3 first round picks and giving up the late 1 gives them a definitive edge over everyone else. Does Detroit pass us Okudah or Simmons for a Miami late 1? If not then we are in the driver's seat potentially.

Nailed it. Miami specifically said at end of year we will use our draft capital for a QB or something to that effect.

Unfortunately I think Detroit gets the windfall not us. Detroit still gets Okudah or Simmons if they drop to 5. They only need to get past us. And we may be taking the OT.
I'd make that trade and then trade down again with LAC.

Would do it in a heartbeat
Payasdaddy : 3/30/2020 3:32 pm : link
Walk away with OT, maybe Hennessy or Ruiz and Baun in 2nd
Maybe we late third with 2nd rd grade
2 fourths safety and another ER or cover lb
I'd do that trade instantly
Torrag : 3/30/2020 3:36 pm : link
Add an extremely valuable 2nd and 4th this year and recoups the pick lost on the LW deal next year.

No brainer.
Like the logic except want Simmons as our first pick.
TMS : 3/30/2020 3:40 pm : link
Use the rest for OL or whatever.

DG also publicly stated "we're open for business" on that #4 pick. Does that sound like DG? Nope. But he said it.
I want your first round pick this year,

and the in each of the next two drafts

holy hell
Pork Chop : 3/30/2020 3:56 pm : link
i would do that in a second. then try to convince the Chargers that other teams were inquiring about #5.
Why wouldn't we take the free money?
Jim in Forest Hills : 3/30/2020 3:58 pm : link
Im sure DG would.

Question is, can he negotiate that out?
DG is not stupid
Dave on the UWS : 3/30/2020 4:43 pm : link
PLUS, he’s not operating in a vacuum. Judge will be there preaching the Pats way (which is trade down). If things break right , I think it’s likely. How much he gets is a damn good question.
It's Cheaper than trading with Detroit,
ZogZerg : 3/30/2020 5:13 pm : link
But much more risky as a team could jump to #3.

Okudah or Simmons. We look for OL later in the draft. Unless the deal gets us one of them another way.

I love Wirfs potential and and the gifts he displayed during testing. I think a trade further down could be had for Wills. Perhaps for Wirfs as well.

I don't want Simmons at #4 or near there.
