I’ve been watching a lot of Football Life programs during the lockdown. Particularly enjoying some of the great QB ones from the 70s (Bradshaw, Staubach, Jerry Golsteyn :p).
It got me thinking about the responsibility those QB’s had for calling the game in the days before headsets in helmets etc.
Granted, it’s not the complex offenses of today but, still, it’ was an added pressure and facet to the games of those players.
And I started thinking about modern QB’s who you think would flourish if the QB was once again made the signal caller.
I think Eli would have been really well-suited to carrying out that duty. Obviously Brady and Peyton come to mind. Both tireless workers and students of defensive tendencies. Anyone else that BBI would endorse?any that you think would be hurt by it? Philip Rivers has struck me as pretty robotic. Don’t think he’d be a natural for it, for example.
It’s just one of those random memories that will stay with me as long as a live. Man I grew up with some baaaaaaad football (and baseball).
The Game changed with Peyton...Helmet Mic or not, 80% of the QB game at the NFL level takes place between Tueday and a Half Count before every single snap. Check offs...dumps...Kills---staying out of BAD Plays and BAD Blocking Schemes.... the Shits and Tees and "making every throw" are now GIVENS---it's the mental game that cannot be measured or played at any level other than NFL that makes scouting a QB almost imnpossible.
sorry
LOL - Golsteyn, Dean, Del Gazio. We sure had a "murderers row" of QB's in the 1970's.
Seems like some of the more elite veterans have greater freedom to change plays...how much no doubt varies
