NFT: NFT: Any aquarium owners out there??

Scott in Montreal : 3/30/2020 3:13 pm
Having my company being labeled essential I have not had the to deal with the boredom that most have had to put up with.

This weekend staying home I was going a bit stir crazy just sitting around so I set up another aquarium that I had in storage to run along side with my freshwater 90 gallon.

I have had tanks up and running for 40+ years. Both fresh and salt water. Back in the day many as 20 in a dedicated fish room from 10 gallon up to 220 gallons. Sold all but the two I have now when I moved. Only had the 90 running the last 5 years. I have bred different species of fish, even sold them, and ran an aquarium store for a few years .

My main passion is Central and South American Cichlids. The 33 gallon will probably be more of a community tank and I will keep the cichlids I currently have in the 90. Until the community fish get boring that is and I eventually go back to cichlids.

Anyone else into the hobby. What are you keeping? Do you find it addictive? Do you buy your supplies locally or online?

I haven't had a tankin about 10 years

However,I had them all

55 Gallons
29 Gallons
Freshwater/Saltwater

I had a Oscar Tank

Tank for Tiger Babs and more fast moving fish like Tri Color Sharks/Mollies/Irredesciant(sp) Sharks/ETC

I had a tank just for Elephant Noses and Angel Fish/Fancy tale guppies (my favorite tank)

Saltwater tank I had Clown Fish/HippoTangs/etc

I really miss it and plan on doing this again, great hobby

Also,I like the power heads opposed to charcoal filters
I used to

mostly cichlids. Love em. Bought my daughter a little 10 gal tank for Xmas and populated with the usual starters (mollies, beta etc) and they all died except one of the mollies. Made me remember why I stopped lol. Anyhew the friggen molly had babies....twice! First time a few survived out of the dozen babies, then another dozen cam along. This past weekend was the "sophie's choice" moment, as the babies were getting too large for the tank to handle. We've got five mollies now :).
I used to breed African Cichlids

40 gallon freshwater tank about 20 years ago and from time to time I think about taking it back up. But I just never understood how every so often, a fish would just fucking disappear.

Too spooky.

Tanks

Ron. Elephant noses are great fish. A little delicate but when they are in the right tank they are amazing.
I have not used charcoal in years. One thing I learned over the years and was proven true when I was at the store. Most of the filter products are useless and just a cash grab. My old modified Aquaclear HOB, and Ehiem canisters with just sponges and media have done the job forever.

Chef. I have never had africans other than Polleni's and Jewels but always had an interest in the Lake Victoria fish. Mostly due to the rarity of seeing them in the hobby because of the issues Victoria has. Would love to have a large tank of entirely Lake Victoria fish one day. Frontosa's are one bad ass fish.

Weekend. I really like the Dwarf lions but they are extremely hard to find. I also kept clowns, Damsel's, Chromis, and love some of the small bass species.

I always end up going back to american cichlids.
If you have a lake on your property...

does that count?
It's been 7 years since I tore my last one down

I've had a few salt water tanks. My last one was a complete DIY job that had 2 40 gallons tied together to make 1 display. I tried to do a reef setup only using captive bred species.

Definitely love how peaceful they were,it was hard to feed with the blood worms. I also had a bunch of Clown Loaches to color up that tank. Couldn't put fin nippers like tiger barbs in there or even neons, the Angel Fish would eat the neons

That is a really nice setup. Some of the captive bred fish I see them selling now is amazing. So many species are now available. Fifteen years ago it was basically clowns and the prices were crazy.

That is the reason I went with 2 40 gallon tanks back then. I could house a pair of clowns in each tank and 1 other small captive bred fish. The rest of the tank was focused on invertebrates and corals simply because there wasn't many options in fish at the time.
