Name best Giants players with the least physical talent

CMicks3110 : 3/30/2020 11:29 pm
additional criteria - had to make a meaningful contribution to the team for longer than 1 season.

the first people that comes to mind for me is Howard Cross, Dan Campbell, David Diehl, Ahmed Bradshaw,
Gibril Wilson was the first name to pop into my head.

first name that popped in my head so I went with it .
Chase Blackburn is the poster boy
Torrag : 3/30/2020 11:36 pm : link
imo.
My list
yalebowl : 3/30/2020 11:37 pm : link
Phil McConkey
Stacey Robinson
Chase Blackburn
Herb Welch
John Mistler
Frank Ferrara
ahmed bradshaw had a lot of athletic ability
Torrag : 3/30/2020 11:39 pm : link
...only dropped in the Draft because of a theft incident in college.
Blackburn
BigBlueNH : 3/30/2020 11:39 pm : link
Chase. Going back to my early days as a fan: Joe Morrison.
I kind of see what you mean
Anakim : 3/30/2020 11:39 pm : link
Diehl and Seubert were overachievers. They were the first ones to come to mind.
you ever seen Eli with his shirt off
Giantsfan79 : 3/30/2020 11:41 pm : link
?
Antonio Pierce
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 3/30/2020 11:45 pm : link
Undrafted. Didn’t become a full-time starter in the league until his 4th season at the age of 26.

Not the biggest or strongest or fastest. But his leadership and IQ were great. Made a Pro Bowl with us, made one of the underrated (not here) plays in Giants history with the tackle in Green Bay, and won the Super Bowl as one of the key pieces of our defense.
Not exactly the least physical talent
Matt M. : 3/30/2020 11:54 pm : link
but for some reason Jessie Armstead comes to mind. He had physical question marks and was small. Came in with a chip on his shoulder becasue so many passed on him.
Last 20 years - Pierce, Diehl, or O'Hara
Eric on Li : 3/30/2020 11:54 pm : link
Diehl was a mediocre guard who somehow shifted to play a solid LT at a very discounted price. O'Hara was a solid gritty C who was the glue of the line despite not really being all that athletic or all that strong.

Pierce was a middling athlete who was a great leader and had great instincts to get the most out of his ability.

I also considered Jake Ballard and Chase Blackburn, but they just didn't play enough. I considered Seubert too , but I think his talent level is wildly underrated. He was a terrific pulling guard, with underrated strength, and probably made more visible good blocks than anyone other than Snee.
Eli?
George from PA : 3/30/2020 11:56 pm : link
Not exactly a physical specimen

Seubert came to mind but I believe he was originally a TE in college so he clearly had more athletic ability than he was given credit for.
+1 on Pierce
AcesUp : 3/31/2020 12:01 am : link
He was slow and he certainly didn't look the part. Still the best LB we've had in the last 15 years. That tackle in the Green Bay NFCCG alone cements his place in Giants history but it wasn't an anomaly. He did that consistently and his biggest contributions didn't show up on the stat sheet or highlight reel.

Maybe the opposite. DeOssie's athletic numbers were through the roof.
Jessie Armstead?
montanagiant : 3/31/2020 12:18 am : link
Yes highly touted out of HS but injured his ACL in his sophomore year at Miami and lasted until the 8th round of the draft
the hefty lefty
mpinmaine : 3/31/2020 12:18 am : link
..
It is all relative to the position played
OlyWABigBlue : 3/31/2020 12:20 am : link
but only imo, the least athletic/measurable/flash player to make a meaningful contribution for one or more seasons is David Tyree.

First guy who came to my mind.
Bright guy out of Cornell...
Mcphedge : 3/31/2020 1:03 am : link
...who lasted much longer than I thought ... Kevin Boothe
Ahmed Bradshaw!!????...He was a Beast!!~!!
Rafflee : 3/31/2020 1:14 am : link
what are you talking about?
Bob Tucker
aquidneck : 3/31/2020 4:52 am : link
Great receiving tight end during the dark days came to the Giants from the minor league Pottstown Firebirds.

Played 8 years for the Giants then followed Fran Tarkenton back to MN where he finished his career.
Probably....
Milton : 3/31/2020 5:26 am : link
Charles Way.

Gibril has little physical talent? I guess we watched different players.
To the OP. Ahmad Bradshaw? You kidding. 5 foot 9 weighed 208 and could run with power. Underrated hands. Diehl is a good selection, what about safety Michael Johnson.
Conrad Hamilton - kind of slow and on the short side, but found a way
Ira : 3/31/2020 5:58 am : link
to cover receivers.
How about Charles Way?
MBavaro : 3/31/2020 6:52 am : link
Not a lot of lateral movement, just kinda ran straight ahead. Had one or two pretty good seasons.
First person to come to mind
Gman11 : 3/31/2020 7:10 am : link
was Doug Kotar. Not a great player, but a consistent contributor.
Doug Riesenberg
Bubba : 3/31/2020 7:11 am : link
OT from the 80s. Per Parcells "another tough guy".
Ahmad Bradshaw? Gibril Wilson? Charles Way?
mfsd : 3/31/2020 7:11 am : link
Im not sure some of you guys understand what physical talent is
Phil McConkey is the first player to come to mind
bob_in_ec : 3/31/2020 7:17 am : link
I like the suggestion of Chase Blackburn also
Every White guy who ever made the team.

Seubert
Chris684 : 3/31/2020 8:05 am : link
..
Chase Blackburn
LBH15 : 3/31/2020 8:16 am : link
indeed
Pierce is a good one
mfsd : 3/31/2020 8:23 am : link
Considered too small coming out of college, didn’t even get a combine invite and wasn’t drafted. I don’t know if I’d say he was slow, but he wasn’t the sideline to sideline type of MLB most teams crave. He delivered an exceptional career through brains and instincts.

Howard Cross is another one IMO...big and strong, exceptional blocker, not much else to offer physically, but turned into one of the most dependable blocking TEs of his era.

McConkey is the obvious #1 choice.
Pierce & Chase Blackburn for sure
Rudy5757 : 3/31/2020 8:24 am : link
I disagree n the OP of Ahmed Bradshaw, the only reason he was a 7th rounder was because of his background.
How about Tim Carter?
FranknWeezer : 3/31/2020 8:30 am : link
Guy was absolutely ripped and he could fly. Hands coulda used some work though.
A bunch of guys on that 2007 team.
FStubbs : 3/31/2020 8:42 am : link
Pierce, Diehl, O'Hara, Boss, Robbins, Mitchell, the list goes on and on. Pierce claimed once that the 2007 team had arguably less athletic talent than the pathetic teams Shurmur coached, they were just nastier and wanted it more.
As if anyone here has the ability to measure..
EricJ : 3/31/2020 8:53 am : link
a player's physical talent other than speed. So ridiculous.

But hey you are quarantined so...
David Tyree??
SteelGiant : 3/31/2020 9:27 am : link
Special Teams Gunner - depth wide receiver - Made the greatest catch in Super Bowl history - also scored 1 of 3 TDs in that game - plax and Randy moss the others.

It also was not just that game - David Tyree was in the background for most of career - I remember liking him when he was catching passes from Kerry Collins. That is a long time to last in the NFL just doing the small things and showing up on the biggest stage. I think he deserves the nominee.

Super Bowl champion (XLII)
NFL All-Rookie team (2003)
Pro Bowl (2005) - Special Teams
First-team All-Pro (2005) - Special Teams
From the 1960"s

Gary Reasons maybe. His goal line tackle against SF playoff game many moons ago is still one of my favorites.

He was the opposite of what was asked. Had physical talent. Could run like the wind. Was a lousy player. Couldn't catch the coronavirus if three affected people sneezed on him.
Joe Morrison
Spider56 : 3/31/2020 12:46 pm : link
He was a HB and QB in college and played multiple positions for the Giants catching nearly 400 passes from 7 different QBs over his career.
Sean 'The Sofa' Landetta...
x meadowlander : 3/31/2020 12:59 pm : link
...absolutely DEADLY pud of a punter.
Another Vote for Blackburn,
clatterbuck : 3/31/2020 2:02 pm : link
He was teaching HS math when Giants signed him. Gave them a decent presence in the middle, his int. was play of the game in SB XLVI.
Matt Bahr...
x meadowlander : 3/31/2020 2:10 pm : link
...not only a clutch, great kicker, average build, under 200 lbs, but funny as hell and who didn't love seeing him actually making tackles on specials?
Jim Burt
redwhiteandbigblue : 3/31/2020 5:56 pm : link
Classic overachiever. TE Aaron Thomas, S Pete Athas, WR Steven Baker the Touchdown maker.

Way was insanely talented. Gary Shirk off us older folk.

Blackburn and Pierce were limited and contributed those two lead the pack
