Per Raanan: Terms for Signed FAs Slightly Altered

Jon in NYC : 3/31/2020 9:28 am
@JordanRaanan
As noted in here, #Giants did in fact use signing bonuses for their top FAs. They quickly amended the original structure to deals for James Bradberry ($9M signing bonus, $3M roster bonus) + Blake Martinez ($6M signing, $4M roster). Provides more cap space than has been reported.

term cap space but more long term limitations.
From OTC
pjcas18 : 3/31/2020 9:32 am : link
it looks like both Bradberry and Martinez can still be let go after two years with no dead money and full cap relief.

If OTC is up to date with this, then the impact isn't really any different. These are three year deals with all the commitment in the first two years.
If there are signing bonusses
madeinstars : 3/31/2020 9:35 am : link
You can never get out of the contract with full cap relief. The prorated portion of the signing bonus will always be a cap hit.

Anyway, we can now throw all the think pieces about Gettleman's new and revolutionary approach to contracts and how he was selflessly setting up the Giants to be as flexible as possible in the future out the window.

That Doesn’t sound right

There is no way to limit signing bonus to two years

Yeah, OTC still has them as all roster bonus, not signing bonus, I guess they're a little out of date.
Yes there will be dead money in theory

But the numbers you are talking about are fairly small if it came to that considering the likelihood of cap increases over time.

If the total bonus money is the same, the long term implications are equal since they can carry over unused cap space year-to-year.
backs up glazers comments from yesterday

seems like this is a win now or else year from ownership to DG and it was great to structure those deal for long term success for Giants but DG now needing to free up more cap space because he knows the roster is still very flawed.

Bringing back a potential lame duck GM makes no sense.
Contracts still look fine to me
ron mexico : 3/31/2020 9:51 am : link
Not an expert on either player but it seems to me Martinez is the riskier signing and as such has a nearly 50/50 split between signing and roster.

But if they want to cut the players there is more dead cap now

Welp, so much for the totally front-loaded approach. This reported change adds $10M more in cap space for this offseason than would have been available based on the roster bonus only structure (while increasing cap hits in 2021, 2022)
so much for the team being smart about front loading contracts

It only means anything if these two are cut. I seriously doubt either are. And if the cap jumps as has been reported, then it makes more sense.
I believe
pjcas18 : 3/31/2020 11:15 am : link
the dead cap in year 3 would be $3M and $2M respectively, so still not terrible.

And I agree it only matters if they're cut, but it's good to have options and flexibility.

I know coming into this off-season many fans on here felt like the Giants could do whatever they want with all this cap space. Well guess what it's pretty much gone and the Giants didn't sign any big name players (which is fine with me, but fans need to have different expectations).
keyword here is "slightly altered"
Eric on Li : 3/31/2020 11:29 am : link
there's not that much money kicked down the road, and with the age of both players it's at worst 50-50 this ever even has an impact on future cap decisions while opening up extra money right now to perhaps add a Markus Golden or Logan Ryan (if they choose to either now or post-draft).

Both bonuses appear to be fractional compared to the amount they used to give out in SB under Reese, and even compared to what they gave Solder a couple years ago.
Did the Giants actually amend anything

Or was the initial reporting just wrong

Depends how you define "Long Term". I believe most of the contracts were 3 years or less. Purposely done to protect the long term cap implications.
