He’s not wrong. Others might say the country is desperate for a diversion and that might be welcomed by holding the draft.
Can you please find a report that supports his assertion that there is carnage in the streets? Because if there is no killing of a large number of people in the streets, then yes, he is literally wrong.
Country needs a little normal. Yes,people are dying, Goodell is making the right call. People are scared some are losing everything due to shutdown. A little light is great for country.
trying to get back to some normalcy, an event which doesn't require people at the same location, is a great respite, for to those get great enjoyment from it. No disrespect to those who are suffering, and will suffer, but its one of the few things that can go on, without risk of spreading this awful disease.
i am a bit confused as to why it's a bad thing to have the draft when they are doing it virtual? It would be one thing if the NFL said fuck it, we are having the draft event and everyone should come...that would be insane. But they are just having the team call in the picks video video, etc...isn't that the whole point of the social distancing/stay at home thing?
A socially distanced draft will mean less publicity for him, less cocktail parties in Vegas, less of the BS that fans hate but allow Schefter to feel important.
like others have said, doing it virtually seems like a pretty safe and reasonable alternative. But the fact that Goodell basically issued a gag order on teams disagreeing with the league doing it is a pretty good indication that Schefter's not alone in thinking it's a bad idea.
I don't see any issue the decision, but I'm sure some franchises aren't happy about the fact that they won't get to have live workouts and face-to-face interviews with potential picks.
As for Schefter and his high horse, the less said the better.
to show this country's resiliency. They can hold the draft in a safe and responsible way (video conferencing, etc.) and send a message to the American people about being responsible and safe, taking care of one another, and that we will get through this. We need to see that the world is not ending, even though there is tragic news left and right. This too shall pass. But we will bounce back.
This reminds of the debate about having the World Series after 9/11. In many ways, having the Series, in NY of all places, was a powerful message for many people across the country in the wake of that tragedy.
insisted MLB be played during the war. To give people a chance to think about other things , providing a general boost to morale . Same thing , here . The NFL is doing the country a favor at this point .
These are brutal , sad , anxiety -ridden times . The death count is not going to go up because the league’s fans are going to be glued to their televisions .
RE: If you saw what the next 2-3 weeks are projected to be like yesterday
He’s not wrong. Others might say the country is desperate for a diversion and that might be welcomed by holding the draft.
It is tragic what is going on. That said, the best thing to do is try to divert attention from it for everyone elses mental sanity. It is why Elton John put together a one hour concert on TV Sunday night. It is why Jimmy Fallon is doing the tonight show from his house and it is why feature films are going to directly to on-demand and skipping theatres.
It is horrible what is happening and what is to come, but I disagree with Schefter saying the NFL is wrong. It is awful what 3-4 million americans will deal with from the virus. It is not wrong to try and entertain and help the mental sanity of everyone else.
I disagree with Schefter but this is terrible logic. This is in NO WAY a political statement but should White House correspondents not be critical of Presidents (Dem or Rep.) bc of the link to their employment?
The NFL can handle this remote. Corporate America has had to change its operations and processes over the last month. Why is the NFL any different?
Turning the draft into a spectacle has hurt the draft. I would like more analysis anyway compared to the crowd shots and pointless interviews with a reporter trying to tap into a 20 year-old's feels.
Get the right analysts in place, and this can be the best draft in years.
So the guy who publishes peoples private health records
who puts forth an argument on ethics should have an impeccable record themselves on ethics.
Not doing so in and of itself is unethical.
If the NFL was planning no changes to the draft, holding it on the streets of Vegas - this would have some merit. To have a draft without a crowd or people present makes that type of argumentation useless.
I disagree with Schefter but this is terrible logic. This is in NO WAY a political statement but should White House correspondents not be critical of Presidents (Dem or Rep.) bc of the link to their employment?
Way overboard captain. It was just a post with a bit of sarcasm.
I think the draft can potentially better than ever. Less footage of the QB sitting on his hands waiting to be drafted. They'll have to rely more on game video packages, which is what most of us want to see anyway.
And even if that is true, which it very well may be, what will conducting the NFL Draft in a safe manner via whatever platform they choose contribute to a rise in that number? IF this is true, we are gonna need any entertainment that we can muster. And maybe by that point the idiots out there who continue to live their lives as if nothing special is going on will finally get it in their heads that they need to STAY THE FUCK HOME and cancel their social engagements for the near future! Stay home and watch the damn draft!
If its not obvious, yes, some of the reports im seeing are really starting to piss me off. Is it really THAT hard to just stay home? Maybe my perspective as someone who served in the Navy and did multiple months at seas without even seeing land has prepared me for this, but I really dont find it to be that hard. In fact its much easier than those deployments were! Just cant understand how people cant just do what needs to be done to save their lives and the lives of others.
OK rant over:). Bottom line is if conducting the draft isnt hurting anyone, dont see a need to cancel it.
more now than before. I'm excited for less hoopla and less "entertainment". Just show the picks remotely and breakdown clips of the players actually playing. I can do without the red carpet and everyone dressing like Cam Newton.
Schefter just jumped the shark. No one will be put at risk to conduct the Draft. The country needs to have some normalcy and look to the future in conducting daily business. It is neither inappropriate, or 'too soon' for this kind of event to go forward..
In fact, it may just be exactly what is needed.
I’m not in total agreement that the draft is harmless at this point
We see the front end of the draft process. Maybe they don’t need to fill an auditorium and have a live presentation of the draft as usual, but what about the logistics of participating in the draft, from a team’s perspective?
Each team has dozens of personnel involved in a draft that we’re mildly aware of, God knows how many other people are involved. What will the new war room be? Where’s the board? Where’re the owners, GMs, coaches, medical, scouts, assistants, admin etc going to be?
How will they safely work and collaborate together? Are they going to sit in their offices or wfh and Zoom in draft night? Spread people throughout the facility and use Slack? Rent a ballroom (if you can find one), raise our hands and hope to be called on by the GM before submitting a default pick because the clock ran out? Or clock runs out and team doesn’t have a default pick ready?
The clock moves fast enough as it is. Will the teams get “overtime” for this?
I don’t want to be disadvantaged by coping with the format.
I don’t want to lose out on a player or a monster trade because a phone call can’t be routed properly, internally or externally.
I don’t want personnel exposed to risk, just because they decided to work in sports.
I disagree with Schefter but this is terrible logic. This is in NO WAY a political statement but should White House correspondents not be critical of Presidents (Dem or Rep.) bc of the link to their employment?

Lighten up.
Lighten up? If my response made you feel like I was too hard on you, maybe you need to toughen up.
And I dont think "sarcasm" means what you think it means.
I think they should just this year do away with the extended format. Do rounds 1 and 2 in Primetime in one night and do the rest the following day. If they're just going to do by VC then a lot of the filler for tv is going to evaporate so they may as well condense it.
We lose about 3 million people a year
Urge to praise Goodell... growing..
Can you please find a report that supports his assertion that there is carnage in the streets? Because if there is no killing of a large number of people in the streets, then yes, he is literally wrong.
We need some sense of normalcy.
Schefter is a joke and should have lost his job after what he did to JPP. Fuck him.
I think it will be a nice distraction.

Right. And typically people in the position to do that aren't the type to get into grandstanding for attention.

This is a game, even though it kind of isn’t.
If they can do it digitally and without contact, what the hell is the problem? Let us enjoy something (without harming anyone of course).
