For starters I am on board with going with either Simmons or the top rated OT at 4 or with a small trade down with either Miami or Chargers. I also happen to like the idea of going with both OL/highest rated LB in both 1st and 2nd rounds. If you had to choose between these two sets of prospects, which would you prefer:
1) Isaiah Simmons OLB/Clemson=Austin Jackson OT/USC
2) Jedrick Wills OT/Alabama=Zach Baun OLB/Wisconsin
I would be happy with either combo but interested to hear what others think might suit our needs the best.
In fact you aren't getting a plug and play OL in the 2nd Round at all. They' all be gone, including Ruiz at OC.
OT in Round 1. Our QB's future may depend on it.
Just ask David Carr....
This is correct. Probably only way is a slight tradedown to 6 or 7 then using the 2nd and/or 3rd rd pick acquired to trade up back into round 1.
Then you might be able to get one of Jackson or Josh Jones but like Ezra Cleveland who is likely to make back of first round too. Charlie Heck, Matt Peart, Prince Wanebegho ,Sadiq Charles, Lucas Niang those are the guys that make it to 36 or later. Even Ruiz at Center is likely gone by 36

I get what you are saying, who is going to be available in round 2, and if neither then a moot point. I guess one of my questions is how much of a drop off would Baun be if we were able to nab him in round 2 vs. taking Simmons in round 1, and obviously grabbing the OT in round 1.
LB Simmons is intriguing, but at this point I am seeing a greater value with OT Wills at pick 4.
I'm not sold at all on Isaiah Simmons, Niang or Cushenberry in that next group as worthy of #36. Late 2nd to early 3rd rounders who I don't project as immediate starters.
I will say Ezra Cleveland is rising. I've done a deep dive on him and he may be in the conversation. Like Jackson he needs functional core strength development(30 BP doesn't impress me, most useless combine test ever for playing football). Arm length/wingspan and hand size are a concern for him succeeding at OT as well(under 33 1/2"-9" hands). Elite movement skills though. I don't think he can start Day 1 but has starter upside. I don't think he fits the Giants profile at the position though. We covet size/length/power. That isn't Ezra's game.
Hernandez was there just 2 years ago. Patriots find OL all over the rounds in the draft, etc. Gettleman actually has found OL outside the 1st round. If you have an OL and Simmons rated the same (like supposedly Jones/Allen last year), then you take the need in OL, if you have Simmons rated higher you take Simmons because you need talent all over the field.
or
2) Andrew Thomas OLT/Georgia=Isaiah Wilson ORT/Georgia
