The comments above sum it up - some people think he's a G, not an OT; some people prefer other OT candidates; and some just don't think Wirfs is that great. My completely subjective impression from lurking on BBI is that a majority of posters, for whatever reason(s), don't want Wirfs at #4.
After a trade down (if ever), it might look different.
I won't be at all surprised if he's our pick. Unfortunately I also won't be surprised if he's an All Pro OG three years from now and not an OT, which is a problem imo.
For those of us who want to draft an OT at #4, I'd say the favorite is Jedrick Wills, with Mehki Becton a close second.
This. What turned me off on Wirfs was the tape showing his constant inability on his part to adjust as Penn State defenders kept crossing his face taking inside runs into the backfield and the reality that his best spot might be RG in the NFL.

A guy becomes an All Pro guard and that is a problem?????
It really depends on what you value and how you trust your OL coach
Wills is most pro-ready and has the most polished technique. Highest floor of the four top OL, IMO, and will safely be a very good NFL OT.
Becton has the most physical upside purely in size terms, and possesses rare athleticism for as large a man as he is. Hasn't been coached especially well yet, so potential is untapped for better or worse.
Wirfs may have the highest upside of the four top OL, with athleticism that is extremely rare for an OL prospect, and physical skills that might translate to a HOF-caliber OT, but will require a lot of technical refinement, especially in pass pro. If he can't fix his technique, probably winds up at OG, which would be a disappointment (has there ever been a tantalizing Iowa OT prospect that NYG has considered at #4 overall that wound up being an OG at the NFL level?).
Thomas has played LT at a high level in the collegiate ranks and has a relatively high floor if you need a left tackle immediately, but his upside seems more limited than the other three. I don't see a scenario where Thomas is in play for the Giants. They won't trade down low enough from #4 or high enough from #36 to bring his tier into play.
I go back and forth between Wills and Wirfs, personally. I like Simmons a lot too, and will be very excited if they take him, but I honestly believe the Giants have painted themselves into a corner with regard to the OL and they can't afford to get cute about finally getting this right. The pick at #4 almost has to be an OT. And of the OTs, I think Wills probably makes the most sense, but I'm intrigued by what Colombo could potentially turn Wirfs into - there's some Tyron Smith athleticism there, IMO.

Brandon Scherff was the guy the Giants were enamored with in the 2015 draft if I remember correctly. Scary how closely Tristan Wirfs comps to his predecessor but I think Scherff was the better college player and Wirfs is the superior all around athlete.

That's a pretty damning comp but yeah I remember Gallery was already being fitted for a gold jacket after he destroyed the combine. In fairness though if he were coming out of Iowa right now he'd be neck and neck with Chase Young for the second pick. There would be no discussion over who the best tackle in the draft was.
I would be happy if he's a Giant in that regard. But I just don't think he's worth 4 and I don't think he's the best OT in the draft at all. If they traded down, got more stuff and then picked him, it would be a different story. But at 4, he's a real reach.
OL at 4, i want someone that has the "it" factor to be great. Wirfs has the look to me but that is literally just a feeling i have, not really based on anything else

Some think he's a G not an OT, while others say that he plays "stiff".
I think any OT at 4 is a bad idea given that we are guaranteed that Simmons, Okudah or even Young would be available at 4.
I like Wirfs a lot

Thomas = best all around talent. Battle tested.
Wilks = most athletic
Wills = most pro ready
Becton = biggest potential, high risk high reward.
At least that’s what I’ve gathered from all the talk. Not a scout.

Lol, perfect.
Robert Gallery was the guy I was referencing.
We've had enough of holy crap moments for a lifetime from OTs since David Diehl and Kareem McKenzie retired.
Fuck pancakes. Just keep the QB clean.
Please. Joe Judge, talk to Nick Saban. Take the sure thing this time.
