OT vs. Defense

DonnieD89 : 4/1/2020 5:50 pm
After reading what Colin had posted in his chat session, I understand the point he is trying to make about taking a defensive player at #4 that makes an impact. I know that there are some posters that have a conviction of acquiring an OT at #4 and they make valid points. Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley need help in maximizing their talents and that is building the offensive line. However, Simmons or Okudah could make a bad defense much better. I will not criticize Dave Gettleman for any decision which involves the OT’s, Simmons, or Okudah. The Giants need help in a lot of places. I cannot see where Dave Gettleman cannot go wrong in his decision at #4, unless it is some player or position totally different. I would say the best case scenario would be to get any of the previously mentioned, whether it’s an OT or Simmons or Okudah, and acquire an extra pick in a trade down. That would be everyone’s dream (other than Chase Young being available at #4). I guess it is all going to come down to who is the best available player. Who knows? It may be an OT. We just don’t know, as Colin stated.
I hope it is an OT like Wills.

Defense is about 11 guys playing in unison not one defender. There have been plenty of defenses that have great players that aren't good. There is more to it than that.

Now, I am not saying don't take a great player. What I am saying is the best help we can give the D is controlling the ball on O. We spent 2 top picks on our RB and QB. We need to protect that investment. The best way to do that is to build up the OL. I'm not saying draft an OL to draft an OL. I am saying draft Wills as he is worth the pick. Get back to controlling the clock and the game. If one of these OT weren't worth the pick then I would agree to go with Young, Okudah, or Simmons.
Strange, but there seem to be hardly any really-high-floor guys

at the top of this year's draft. Young and Okudah may be the only sure-bet picks in the top 10. Everybody agrees that Simmons is a unique talent, but his talent is that he's a Swiss Army knife... He's good for a lot of things, but is he Pro-Bowl good at any one position?
Go for defence

You need a playmaker on defence to make the stops on 3rd down in the 4th quarter. The Giants have none. A player like Simmons is that type of player. You can have your improved offensive line which would boost the overall offensive stats and individual stats of Barkley and Jones. But it foes no good if the defense can't hold anyone from scoring in the 4th quarter which they have not been able to do for 3 years. So if the plan is to actually win football games got to get that playmaker on defense.
It’s gotta be

Defense, we’ve absolutely sucked on that end for atleast 9 years, especially getting torched by TEs and slot WRs game in and game out. Shit is absolutely pitiful to watch. There’s enough OTs in the draft to still land a decent one in the second rd. Unless Simmons is taken by Det at 3, which is a possibility, he’s the pick. If he’s gone I’d trade down with the Chargers and pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd then go oline
Barkley and Jones

If the OL remains horrible, they can get seriously injured and their careers can be in jeopardy. RBs already don’t have a long career expectancy. You need to make sure that Barkley is worth that 2nd overall pick and cant have his career shortened due to an OL.
Nobody knows what will happen at the draft. What occurs IF 7 OT are taken round 1/early round 2 before 36? You can’t go for a project tackle and hope that he is good enough this soon. There are 3 tackles that can be taken top 10 that should at least be solid starters for 8 seasons. Wirfs is the only one who potentially moves to Guard in a few years.
David Carr is the cautionary tale

You can ruin your young QB if your line isn't competent. Ours is a trainwreck. He needs to be developing confidence and good habits. You support him by running the ball better and protecting him better when you aren't.

The game today is about QB play first and foremeost. The league has set the rule sup that way and it isn't ever going back.

No one is suggesting, or at least I don't see anyone, that if the OT's weren't rated really high to take one anyway. They are that good. The best available in years. Draft one. It's the best thing for this team.
Most rookie tackles aren't good their first year
widmerseyebrow : 4/1/2020 10:38 pm : link
Which means passing on one this year almost means committing to Daniel Jones getting his head kicked in for two more years.

You draft the QB, you gotta protect him. There will be highly rated defenders in every draft.
For the proponents of OTs
DonnieD89 : 4/2/2020 6:39 am : link
you have valid arguments. However, if the defense sucks, continuing stayon the field, you are still going to lose next year. My point is, going defense or OT, still remains the correct decision either way.
How many first and second round picks are already
LBH15 : 4/2/2020 7:45 am : link
on this Defense? Lawrence, Williams, Tomlinson, Baker, Peppers, Bradberry. Did I miss any?

If Giants re-sign Golden and draft Simmons that will be 8 out of base 11.
If Okuda is there
fireitup77 : 4/2/2020 9:27 am : link
You take him. Build a dominate secondary. The big guys up front can stop the run. Having three cb that can cover will help the pass rush and greatly improve the defense. The D has to be improved if this team is going to start winning again.

Grab a starting center in round 2 to improve the line.

That is why Simmons is a the best pick @ 4 looking at the odds on who is available ... TEs kill us and RBs out the back field ... Simmons should help stop that. Love at FS just due to speed and better abilities will help the 2ndary as well a legit #1 CB in his prime.

They also make a young defense younger.

The Giants need to improve on defense, no doubt, but they really just need to build a competent defense, it doesn't have to be dominant. If the Giants are gonna get to the Super Bowl in the next few years it will be on the strength of the offense. They've made their bed with Barkley & Jones and now's the time to double down on offense, not diversify on defense.
