NFT: A question for the WW2 buffs on BBI

montanagiant : 4/2/2020 3:59 pm
Just got done watching Operation Finale which is about the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina by the Mossad.

The question I have is why was Argentina the country of choice by all these horrid war criminals to hide in after the war?
Not certain, but there were large

numbers of Germans that emigrated to Argentina between the wars. So maybe they felt safe hiding there were they would find a large population speaking German.
I recall Argentina being neutral during WW2

And I think it’s demographics had a high percentage of Germans even before the war. It was also kind of fascist state itself so probably not a big worry for those fleeing to be worried about domestics turning them over.

Something like that.
Peron had a close relationship with Germany and the Nazis

Argentina started a large program to attract european immigrants into Argentina starting in the 1860s. They needed immigration to settle and large land mass. The state not only encouraged by law the immigration, but it made publicity in Europe and participated in international fairs. Travel arrangements were done to subsidize ship tickets.Germans were part of the immigration wave. They are currently the 4th largest group of Argentines after Italianas, Spaniards and French.
Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay

were all friendly to the Nazis to some degree.

As commented before, they have significant populations of German immigrants and/or those of German ancestry, plus a history of commercial relationships with Germany.

Additionally, after a trio of small wars in South America in the 1930s, most of Latin America was neutral in WW II - Mexico, Cuba, and Brazil being the most notable exceptions. Those Latin American countries that did enter the war - actually most of them - did it very late when it was crystal clear who was going to win and that the Allies were going to establish an international organization of some sort (the UN). They didn't want to miss out.

Just google RATLINES

before the war..
Besides the Vatican the US government protected their share of Nazis

Werner Von Braun was a committed Nazi who help design the V2 bombs that terrorized Great Britain at the tail end of the war. The US brought him here to help with the space program. Amazing what our country was willing to do back then. They explained it away by convincing themselves that if they didn't help Von Braun escape the Russians would.
Hmm what a wonderful way to excuse this type of war crime.

Not just Nazis

but Jews too. Argentina has a very large Jewish community, apparently (I've never been). Buenos Aires was the scene of two massive anti-Semitic terrorist attacks by Iran and Islamic Jihad in the 1990s. The Israeli embassy bombing in 1992 killed 29 people, and the JCC bombing in 1994 killed more than 80 people.
Also, the only kosher McDonalds in the world outside of Israel is in BA.
