Hampton was my idol when I first fell in love with the game. Even wore #27 in high school in honor of him. I swear he is one of the most forgotten Giants greats ever! You can barely find highlights of his games online.
My favorite all-time Giant. I remember sitting down with my dad and brother with a notebook, tracking every carry and how many yards it went for when I was a kid. Rodney was the only semblance of offense the Giants had for several years. His game in the wild card round against Minnesota in '93 was one of my favorite single game performances by a Giant ever (given I was at the game, and he was my favorite player). Here's to 51 more, Rodney!

Right? Our offense under Reeves was mostly either a handoff to Hampton or a Dave Brown chuck and duck in the direction of Chris Calloway

I remember hearing the stories about how Hampton was never in the weight room, he just showed up to practice and games and that was it. I wonder if a player would be allowed to get away with that nowadays
He was always my favorite RB. Even though I've got a well developed appreciation for Tiki, Jacobs, & Bradshaw it is Hampton that really had the overall abilities that made me think that he was the rarest of gems.
George Young fought Bill Parcells for him when the Giants were on the clock during the 1st round of the 1990 NFL Draft. Parcells wanted Jackson St. OLB-Darion Conner, but Young used his authority and wisely chose Georgia RB-Rodney Hampton.
He had size, speed, great hands catching the ball, good pass blocking abilities, and the quickest feet you ever saw on a 220 pound RB. He would glide in the hole; moving laterally while his shoulders stayed square & parallel to the line of scrimmage.
He ran with great body lean and could deliver a solid blow. So Dan Reeves over used him running him up the gut over and over again. Each year Hampton came in heavier. He was 215 when drafted and 240 when he retired. He took a pounding between the tackles. Stupid Reeves never ran him outside, never threw him the ball, never let him line up anywhere but in the backfield where everyone knew he was coming straight up the gut. Hampton was the entire offense. Within a few years he was to injured and out of shape to play.
I hope that we don't see a similar fate for Saquon Barkley. I hope that history has taught the Giants that you must block well for your star running back. I hope for the Giants to find a supporting unit of blockers for Barkley.
Blockers like Maurice Carthon, Zeke Mowatt, Mark Bavaro, Howard Cross, Jarrod Bunch & Charles Way before their injuries forced them to retire......... Madison Hedgecock & Henry Hynoski were good too.
We are on our way with some of the new TE's we've accumulated. It's a good start anyway, so let's hope that we continue to supply talent to the collection of people we entrust the blocking assignments to. Barkley & Jones are depending on it, not to mention everyone else involved. Control the ball & the clock while scoring points & keeping our no name defense fresh. :-)
Loved Hampton growing up. Still remember that playoff game vs. the Vikes like it was yesterday.

The team was so crappy on offense in those years I mentioned that even a 6 yard run by RH made the cut on my best of tapes..
His was the first jersey I bought.
I loved him, I have his autograph still. Happy Bday!
