as I've literally spent the entire day today, since 6am, saving newspaper articles on teh 1986 Giants for the video project. There are a lot of references to the 1956 Giants in the papers that year, especially late in the season when it becomes apparent the Giants are a legitimate contender.
I recall at some point, either after the champhionship game or the Super Bowl there is an interview with Charley Conerly that I had found when wiritng this 1956 article. Those were two iconic teams in Giants history. Maybe their most important.
Whenever the 1956 Giants are mentioned, I always feel obligated
That was my first full season of following the GIANTS after discovering them part way through the 1955 season.
My father and I watched that Championship game and I watched in amazement because I had never seen a pro football team put up a score like that before, or whip an obviously very good opponent so thoroughly.
And I still remember those old black and white telecasts with the stadium lights gleaming off the sometimes rain-drenched helmets on those late fall afternoons, with the Yankee Stadium crowd rumbling out the "GOOOH - GI - ANTS" cheer with the GI syllable in a lower register when the offense was on the field.
forward to reading it. The good news is that I LIVED through it, so this should help fill in any blanks that have popped up through the years
Home from college, I attended the championship game with my dad and his pals. In Maine all we could watch back then was the Browns so this, my first NFL game, got me to switch allegiance to Big Blue.
The Polo Grounds was that close to Yankee Stadium. Looks like no more than a mile away.
Right across the “river”. Tremendous rivalry between Yankees and the baseball Giants. And as I remember going to the Polo Grounds, Coogan’s Bluff was a real cliff.

I saw Billy Cannon and the Houston Oilers play the NY Titans (Jets)

It was a golden age of sports in certain respects.
I never got to the Polo Grounds for a Giants game, but I saw a couple of Mets games there in '62-63 before Shea was ready in '64.
