NFT: For those who got laid off

kcgiants : 4/3/2020 8:16 pm
NFT- What are you doing for medical coverage? I know we are going to apply for unemployment and get it. And if you get sick from the covid 19 I heard you are covered by your State but what if you have pre existing conditions and you need your monthly meds like for diabetics? The States closed all stores and everyone is laid off with not medical coverage. Are we suppose to apply for Cobra or Obama Care ( is that still around or did Trump kill the medical). My wife's company laid her off but still will provide medical coverage for the next 12 weeks, but we still have to pay the normal premium as those if she was still employed. Thats fine but what happens after 12 weeks and her boss doesnt reopen and rehire which he said he will do but if we are still in a lock down? Im wondering if others out there are concerned about this and what you have planned.
I thought the ACA took care of those concerns...

Still on my company plan until end of May. Have no idea what to do after that. Cobra is too expensive. But the exchanges have been shit down for new sign ups? And my family is dependent on this. So.... I dunno.
It's not a good situation

My benefits ended on March 31st and COBRA coverage is like $700 a month (and I haven't reached my deductible yet) so I opted for Medicaid-Fidelis for the time being.
My wife is on my coverage anyway so we are lucky there at least...

The refusal to reopen the ACA exchanges is outrageous.
In NJ

lost my job three years ago. NJ family care covered me at much more resonable cost(family rate) then cobra. They make it a bit tedious to get through the application but was worth it. My only problem was getting off their coverage whne my new plan kicked in. I no longer qualified but couldnt opt out without a few weeks notice. ended up paying for an extra month I didnt use but still saved a boatload.
Losing your job is a life event

that permits and individual to purchase insurance through a PPACA (Obama care) web site even though the open period to purchase insurnce has passed.

In addition, some states, such as Massachusetts, have waived the "open period" restriction due to the COVID 19 crisis, permitting anyone to apply for coverage through that states website.
I would be in shock if the lockdown lasts another 12 weeks.

I don't see it going that long. In fact, I'm worried that it will end too soon, because I'm loving this unemployment gig.
Crazy

I work for a hospital upstate.Crazy as it seems they are cutting hours;cutting staff and cutting pay because with all elective surgery cancelled and outpatient visits down they are swimming in red ink
Lost my job back in January

Before all this shit went down. Was able to get my job to cover 2 months of COBRA in my severance but after that...the cost is absolutely ridiculous how is any one supposed to afford $700 a month for coverage? I have bills to pay and there's no way with the unemployment I'm getting would be able to cover all my expenses and my medical coverage.
Lost it on Thursday
Sonic Youth : 4/4/2020 11:13 am : link
COBRA is fucking insanely expensive. Comes out to almost a grand a month for me.

Hoping I can explore some other options.

The NJ Family Care eligibility is based on last years income and it can not be above 130% poverty level. Most of us make slighty more than that last year so we dont qualify. But its now that we dont have a job. With what I hear about the cost of Cobra and with no ACA available most american will be without health coverage during this pandemic. I have yet to hear anything from our elected officials. I am surprised the media hasnt asked them about it. I hope they address it in the next trillion dollar bailout.
Does NYC still have. Child Health Plus?
Matt M. : 4/4/2020 12:23 pm : link
Under that, no child can be denied coverage, regardless of parent financial or employment status. It ranges from free to a max premium of about $20 per month, with no additional costs after that. No deductible. No copays. No prescription copays.

Surprisingly, a ton of doctors participated, so the quality of care was great. I had both my boys on it when I was in my previous job and the cost for family coverage was too high. The head of HR questioned me quite nastily why I only had coverage for myself and my wife, but I didnt care.

I tried to get on the family version, but to cover adults the restrictions were very high. Perhaps ACA has wiped out this wonderful program.

By the time my daughter was born, I no longer used the program because I now work for NYC and receive family coverage for free. Thank G-d.

I don’t know why you would have the assumption that the ACA “wiped out” the program, but you’re wrong. It is still active.

It was a godsend for me when I transitioned careers and was 1099 for about 6 months. Happy to hear its still available, good program.
