NFT: The need to be right

Big Al : 4/6/2020 11:08 am
Looking over my years here on BBI and my personal life, this is some advice I wish I had the strength to follow. I seem to find the people who have grasped this content, here on BBI and in my life the most content people with their life.

A friend recently said "I'd rather be loved than right."

Lots of wisdom there.
It is better to be made right

Than to think we are right in our own minds.

There is great truth right now found in the Lord.

Dr. Jacob Bronowski in his wonderful series, The Ascent of Man. He did a segment on the dangers of certainty, the belief that you are right beyond question. He quoted Cromwell … " I beseech you in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken"

Mike I have posted the video taken here of him standing in the mud outside a concentration camp a few times over the years.
I find that when the I'm right, no I'm right happens...

It's worth it sometimes to just walk away. I had that happen last week with my wife. We both apologized and are in a better space.
One of the saddest parts
crick n NC : 4/6/2020 11:55 am : link
Of human behavior is being wise enough to alert others about the possibility that they could be mistaken while at the same time ignoring that alert within ourselves.

That type of behaviour manifests itself in other situations in life that could be more impactfull than a simple debate.

Arrogance and pride and the competition with others to be right gives way to elevating ourselves over others.

I am aware that I participate in this behavior at times even though I don't agree or like behaving that way. I consider it some progress even if it's a small amount that I eventually became aware of my hypocrisy regarding this behavior, which also makes me more responsible because I have acknowledges that I do know a better way.
Good to see I'm not the only one

Wake n Bakin' these days...

I've had to learn the hard lesson over time.....
Reb8thVA : 4/6/2020 12:03 pm : link
that the constant need to be right is the surest path to alienation and unhappiness. I still struggle with it and have to be reminded to keep it in check.

When I am honest with my self and engage in some introspection at least 80 percent of the time my need "to be right" is driven by my own inadequacies and insecurities.

Here it is the three minute closing segment from the episode on Knowledge and Certainty which is one of my favorite hours of television.

Actually Al, I think it was your postings that turned me on to that. I was so moved by it that I bought the entire series on DVD on ebay.
it applies to work too

i trained myself to try to identify the best idea rather than back my own ideas and I was happier, had less friction, was more productive, ...
Christ paid that price on the Cross so we could be made right with God
MeadowlandsMike : 4/6/2020 12:29 pm : link
It was to take the power of Sin, the debt of Sin entirely off of us so he could place his Spirit, his very nature within us.

It says believe with your heart and confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and you will be saved.

I know many right now whose eyes have been opened because of this invisible force that has consumed many lives. But while this insidious virus brings death , God so loved the world he gave us his Son that if anyone simply believes in him shall never perish but have eternal life.

This is my guiding force every day. Being born again in Christ set free from all Sin and having eternal life. Death no longer is something you fear when you have the one who has overcome the world living in you!

I pray for everyone here during these times that they may come to the eternal truth and hope that is in Jesus Christ.
The usefulness of being right can vary wildly based on the application
Knineteen : 4/6/2020 12:29 pm : link
but I never understood why being right is necessarily a bad thing. It's a backing of one's own conviction and can, (again) depending on application, lead to useful, educational and informative dialogue.

But I would agree that knowing when to put the topic to bed can provide a world of benefit.

Being right is not a bad thing. Failing to consider you may be wrong is a bad thing and insisting everyone capitulate to your view is counter productive.

It's the obsession with being right that causes issues. Overvalued emphasis on being right, the fear of being wrong plays it's roll. I am not quite sure which plays the bigger roll, the love or being right or the fear of being wrong.

More than a decade since I've seen you, and still a 13 word sentence from you can make me laugh. Hope you and the family are doing well, man.
It's complicated for sure

when I was young, I made enough mistakes to see there was much to learn, so I can concede great points and try to hear the other side. Today it seems like fanaticism and shallow stupidity (from the internet) seem to reign supreme.

On BBI, and I am Out Grouping people myself (thanks Moondawg), but as soon as I realize I am dealing with a person that cannot process new information other than to basely argue against it, I pretty much ignore them straight away.
I have a group chat among a group of friends and there is one guy ...
Crispino : 4/7/2020 9:43 am : link
who is obsessed with being the smartest guy in the room on every subject, no matter how mundane. No matter the subject matter, the second anyone puts forth any kind of information, this guy is immediately fact checking on the internet in order to demonstrate his superior knowledge by contesting the original thought, or expanding on it with new information. It’s maddening because it’s so unnecessary.
