NFT: Anyone else not missing the gym?

Gmen1982 : 4/8/2020 11:33 am
I’m 38 and have been going to the gym religiously since I was 16. Since the gym closed I have been just using resistance bands, my kettlebell, push-ups and pull ups. I work out longer since we have nothing but time. I feel great. Not saying I won’t go back to the gym but I definitely feel like I won’t lift as heavy when I go back.
I'm the exact opposite. I miss it a ton.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 4/8/2020 11:37 am : link
Part of the routine. That said, I'm still getting exercise in-two 2.5 miles a day along with 45 minute run.

And as a runner, runners are the WORST with social distancing. When I'm running, I'll make it a point to hang back/run in the street if no cars are coming if someone is too close. Other runners, from what I've mostly noticed, don't show the same consideration. The bastards.
I've been doing a ton of cardio
UConn4523 : 4/8/2020 11:38 am : link
running or biking. Need to start getting back into lifting and when I do its just going to be a simple becnh in my basement with some weights and will also add in some bands. That's really all I'd ever need to just get back to being toned.
Resistance bands? Kettleball?
Jim in Fairfax : 4/8/2020 11:41 am : link

You need to get to the gym and pump some serious iron, or the bullies on the beach will kick sand over your puny muscles!

The lack of routine is killing me. I usually drop the kids off, hit the gym for a few miles, then make my way to the office. I can still run outside, but I dont like it as much, cant occupy myself with youtube, etc., so I dont do it. Its weak and an excuse, I know, but its reality. The bigger problem for me is I am very good at managing my diet when I exercise, very bad when I dont. It just helps being able to say I'm not going to blow all the hard work im putting in by eating these cookies, or whatever. Without that I'm too inclined to just say screw it. Its 1000% a discipline issue that I need to break, and fast, before I give back any more of what I have accomplished.
I miss it too, but I’ve also enjoyed
mfsd : 4/8/2020 11:45 am : link
inventing a mix of home workouts. Me and 3 buddies are texting every day with ideas, and doing combos with pushups, sit-ups, air squats, jump rope, bench jumps, planks, resistance band presses and pulls, and a variety of other stuff.

It helps to have friends holding each other accountable. We’re even planning a max burpees in 5 minutes competition for next week, just for “fun” - eek

Haha. I wonder how weak my bench would be right now.
Miss it

do 10K steps, planks, push ups, and stretching for now.
I fractured my elbow right after Christmas
aimrocky : 4/8/2020 12:04 pm : link
so my weight training went on pause prior to all of this. I was cleared to start lifting again probably 2-3 weeks prior to quarantine, and I had days where my elbow still felt tender, so I'm using this as a chance to let it fully heal.

I'm still getting my cardio in, which is all that I really care about. It's much easier for me to build back up my weight training than it would have been to get back to this point with my cardio.
Miss it bigly
bc4life : 4/8/2020 12:04 pm : link
Doing stuff at home but don't have all the eqpt. Just ordered some bands from Elite FTS.
Any weight fluctuations?
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 4/8/2020 12:05 pm : link
I'm up 1.5 pound to 143 LBs.
Can do 80% of my gym workout at home
Payasdaddy : 4/8/2020 12:05 pm : link
Bowflex adjustable weights and adjustable kettlebell, bench, life fitness g7
Cable system, ez curl bar, few other attachments for g7
Cardio is bike or elliptical at home. Lotsa walking as usual with gsd
Diet still sucks ( baking and double stuff plus a ton of dove dark chocolate )
But it’s getting better
When gym opens back up won’t go there as much since home gym really helps. But instead of 7 days a week there can do 4-5 and finish rest up at home
Kinda saves me 1/2 hr a day not going back and forth to gym too
Although in Bay Area , I have 5 24hr fitness in a15 miles area depending where I am at
I'm missing it big time
ZogZerg : 4/8/2020 12:11 pm : link
Sit ups, Pushups and light dumbbells are not cutting it.

Ordered a power tower pull up and dip station, but procrastinated too long so I won't have it for another week or so.
Yes and no.
Section331 : 4/8/2020 12:11 pm : link
I don't miss going to the gym, and dealing with some of the people there, but there is equipment that I am not able to replicate at home. I do slow 1/4 mile/hard 1/4 mile in my HIIT cycles, and while I have a treadmill in the basement, it isn't as conducive for that as ones at my gym. I also don't have a pull-up bar, and really don't have a spot to put one up, so I do miss that.

I have lost 15 lbs since Feb 1, though.
I miss it

i got the bike and some free weights but you cant match the feeling of going to the gym and lifting..just cant get that same intensity..

Also my routine is off

I don’t miss that much. My one son owned. Gym for about 10 years, he helped me set up home gym.

I mostly work on core strength and stretching for golf, Incan do art home.

At my age balance is in working out hard enough to benefit but not to get injured. I ve hurt myself in gym over the years, so more cautious now, especially during golf season.

Our course is closed, but so far no one has stopped me from walking and playing. Guess they figure walking a course alone is good social distancing

However, expect to get shut down. Now that weather is nice more guys are playing, in groups. They practice social distancing, but not to my standards.

Sorry more than you asked for, hahaha, time on my hands

Our gym
10thAve : 4/8/2020 12:49 pm : link
gives us taped workouts each day and a live workout via Zoom on Saturdays. They also let members borrow equipment that they need. With all the extra time with not having to go anywhere I’m working out more frequently but still miss going and can’t wait to go back.
Yes but it's made me realize I need a home Gym
larryflower37 : 4/8/2020 1:08 pm : link
after this is open I am buying a rack/cage and doing a real home gym and giving up my membership.
Yes. I honestly...
Ryan : 4/8/2020 1:13 pm : link
...hate working out at home. I actually gave my wife's Peloton a try for the first 2 weeks and it's wrecked my back. $3K exercise bike and that's the best they can come up with for a seat? Even with a highly rated gel topper it's pure agony.

I set my garage up
Larry from WV : 4/8/2020 1:43 pm : link
I have a heavy bag, free weight and elliptical in the garage. I'm in there every other day for lunch. The other days I either Run 5 miles or go on a bike ride. I miss the gym but staying home has improved my diet. I'm actually down a little since this started.
honestly, I am miserable without it
islander1 : 4/8/2020 2:11 pm : link
It's killing me that I didn't have the foresight to buy some adjustable dumbbells last month.

I'm already in ESRD and staying fit and strong was one of the only things keeping me held together and feeling decent.
Even before the virus, I workout at home
Dave in Hoboken : 4/8/2020 3:01 pm : link
and love it. Hate going to the gym, so built my own at home last year in an adjacent part of my basement/man-cave. Now that this virus hit, I'm even happier I built this gym just a year ago.

me too. I hate having to go to a gym. I have dumbbells and a push up stand. I stretch, do calastenthics, run in place, shadow box before i go to work. been doing it for 20 years. I do alot of walking too.
I used to do CrossFit
PaulBlakeTSU : 4/8/2020 3:06 pm : link
but had to stop due to persistent back issues, and so I've missed that community for a while now.

Since then, I had switched to class pass and was switching between boxing, cycling, and various HIIT classes.

What I don't miss is schlepping a bag to work and then rushing to make a class, etc.

We got a peloton when we saw that Covid was going to keep us away from gyms for the foreseeable future, and I love it. I get on it whenever I want and I like it better than studio classes.

I also have kettlebells at home and am able to make due with home circuits.

Was going 5/6 days a week, lifting heavy for at least 90 minutes and doing a half hour of cardio. Don't have any of the equipment the gym has and don't know when it'll be back open. I feel like the zombie from Return of the Living Dead "I can feel myself rot"

Somehow the gym on our base has stayed open. Albeit it's on restricted hours and to only active duty members.
Missing it quite a bit.

But lots of pushups, and the home bike, plus a few park hikes a week so far. Grateful for halfway decent outdoor temps. That helps a lot. Imagine this hitting November 15. Could be much worse.
I miss it TREMENDOUSLY

Working out at home with DB's and riding the stationary bike is OK...but man do I miss the gym! Really getting sick of doing the same exercises over and over, and I really miss the routine of heading to the gym after work every night, not to mention the leg presses, squat racks, Hammer Equipment, barbels, other people, etc....and the energy of the gym.

LoL. Sorry man, I know one's weight by itself is fairly meaningless without knowing height and body frame. But your comment had me thinking that the last time I weighed 145 lbs. was likely the 7th grade. I'm a large guy (not fat) frame wise. When I was born, I was unable to fit in the bassinet in the nursery. I was the only newborn in a crib. I was eating cereal hours after being born. I'm a gym rat nowadays usually only missing 1 day a week. I've been making do these past few weeks just maintaining my cardio and have been focusing on sprint intervals. In addition, I've become reacquainted with the Jane Fonda workout that was imposed on us at Ft. Benning.

Same here. I've looked into a couple of different power towers but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I get my cardio in but miss weighted dips and pull-ups like crazy and need to get back to doing them asap. I can find things to make up for most of my other gym work but not those.

Would you mind posting which tower you went with or post a review of it when you do get it?
A good friend and I have been coming up with...
RC in MD : 4/8/2020 7:38 pm : link
Dumb physical challenges for the past two months to break up the monotony of working out, so we are continuing the trend through these social distancing times.

First was 1000 burpees in one day. Then it was doing the Murph everyday for a week straight. Next will be doing 500 pull-ups, 1000 push-ups, and 1500 air squats.

I'm sure we'll come up with something even dumber soon.

Diver, I'm 5'10 & have been stuck between 140 & 145 since college. It doesn't matter what I eat or drink. I just don't gain weight. I got a fast metabolism, which I suspect is genes related from my Mom's side of the family.

If you haven't incorporated heavyvcompound movement lifts to your workouts, you really should.

I was 5'11" and 145lb when I was 22 upon graduating from college. I ran a ton but also lifted. It wasn't until I started really getting into deadlifts and cleans that I saw myself going from a skinny guy to a more lean guy. Now, I'm 180lb, so it's not like I became Arnold, but it's a drastic change from being 145lb for someone who was skinny all his life. I hit 180lb around 29 or so, and as a 40 year old now, I still consider myself in pretty damn good shape.

Just getting back to this thread. Here is what I went with:

I wanted something that I could adjust the height with since my basement ceiling isn't super high.

From Amazon.
