Tanner Volson C - What do we really know?

ChicagoMarty : 4/10/2020 11:57 am
With Halapio recovering from serious injury, Volson currently sits on our roster as the #2 C on our squad behind Spencer Pulley.

So if Pulley were to hurt himself offseason Volson would be the starter pending whatever happens in the draft.

What do we know?

DG picked him up off the scrap heap last December and Volson spent a couple of weeks on our PS.

The Chargers picked him up as a UDFA last season and he made it to final cuts at the end of August.

No one picked him up until December when DG signed him up.

Volson attended North Dakota State a D1-AA level competition. He dominated at that level and was awarded the 2018 FCS Rimington Award as the top C at that level.

Volson is listed at 6'4" 306 lbs. He was an honor student throughout his college career

It is just real hard to project how any college football player will do at the NFL level when they play a small college schedule.

But Volson sounds smart and dominated at his level.

Could it be that one reason DG did nothing in FA at such a critical position as C is because he felt comfortable with Pulley and Volson going into the draft.

How does our coaching staff evaluate Volson? Would he be putty in the hands of Columbo?

I personally am unimpressed with the Centers being touted in the coming draft.

I am wondering if anyone actually caught some North Dakota State games and can share any impressions on Volson.

funny CM.

I was working on a similar thread on Volson.
That would be a Godsend if Volson was

a serviceable C, but I have no idea. They are in a tough situation at C. There isn’t much at all left in FA. The draft may be a tough spot barring a trade down. Their high 2nd may be a bit too high to draft one (and there might be a lot of elite talent left), and who knows what will be left by the late 3rd.

I am hoping they at least trade down to the Dolphins and use the extra 2 or 3 they get on a C
At least let me add his Pro Day numbers

Did Volson begin his college career as a TE or am I confusing him with Wozniak?
I found a little more info

in developing an UDFA into a solid starting offensive lineman. Nick Gates might be Zeitler's replacement in 2-3 years but he still has a lot to work on before he reaches that point.

Center is my biggest concern moving forward. To put it nicely Spencer Pulley is a below average backup. The truth is he is not an NFL caliber player yet he is currently listed as the starting center. It would be a nice development if Volson beats out Pulley for the backup job. Volson has good size and his workout numbers are solid. Let's see how he does in training camp after a full year in an NFL strength and conditioning program.
One thing to keep in mind is that NDSU would be

a top 50 school if they were FBS. They've won 8 of the last 9 FCS championships. His sophomore year, they beat 13th ranked Iowa. Given how he has bounced around, I doubt he will be a long term starter, but teams clearly see something in him that he keeps getting picked up.

I still think DG will address the OC position, and pretty early.
Don't see how they could count on him as a starter

He might be a steal but going into the season with he and Pully is suicide.
I'm all for drafting a new OC, but

the pickings are slim. I want us to draft Hennessy, but might need to either trade up in the 3rd to get him or trade in round 1 to pick up that extra 3rd.

Volson does seem like excellent depth, good find CM.
I hope the Giants acquire another 2nd round pick

or an early 3rd and they use it to select Tyler Biadasz. Sy mentioned that he thinks that Michigan guard Ben Bredeson could also play center. He might not be the most talented guy but he gets the most out of his ability. If he is on the board in round 5 or 6 he would be a nice depth addition with the chance of developing into a starter someday.

We know that he has the opportunity to come in and compete

for a roster spot at a position where they desperately need a quality starter and a quality back-up.

And that he has the size and other physical requirements for the job and played well in college, albeit at a lower level.

And that he did not impress in his audition with the Chargers.

And that is about it.
