A few last minute draft notes

YANKEE28 : 4/23/2020 4:58 pm
Yesterday Sy'56 put QB Nick Tiano is his mock draft to the Giants. Tiano played for Chattanooga the last 2 seasons. Prior to that he was with Mississippi State and as a freshman got some playing time behind Dak Prescott. Considering the Judge connection to Mississippi State, Tiano is a 7th round possibility to the Giants, just as Sy'56 predicts. In Tiano's senior year in high school, he was the #1 prospect at any position from his state of Tennessee.

Another QB possibility is Reid Sinnett from San Diego. Expect a team to use a 7th on Sinnett.

There have been a lot of threads about the new Giant coaches familiarity with the SEC. A name that you don't hear, but yet is a highly regarded player in the Georgia locker room is DL Tyler Clark. Slightly undersized but a high energy very respected guy.

Three OL players that have all been commonly referred to as Gs, might all get drafted as Centers. Its not a strong class for Centers, and you might see Jack Driscoll (Auburn) ,Jonah Jackson (Ohio St via Rutgers), and Danny Pinter (Ball State) picked as Centers.

I expect Wake Forest OL Justin Herron to be drafted higher than predicted

I think WR Michael Pittman will also be drafted higher than predicted, especially when you add in his return skills

Perhaps the best athlete in the 2019 college season was QB Bryce Perkins, the QB at Virginia. Bryce is the younger brother of former Giant RB Paul Perkins. I feel certain that Bryce has no future in the NFL as strictly a QB, but anyone that watched Perkins couldn't miss the talent. I think some team will take a chance on him late. There is just too much natural athletic talent to ignore.

I think a team looking down the road for a developmental LT that they can develop should be thinking LT Anthony McKinney of TCU. Transferred there for only his last two years. Is he raw? Yes. But he is 6'8" and 318 pounds and moves extremely well. There is a lot to work with and he plays with attitude.

James Smith-Williams is an edge rusher with North Carolina State that has been mentioned a lot as a riser in the past few weeks. I watched NC State play West Virginia last year. Let's just say that Smith-Williams was stone-walled quite a bit by OT Colton McKivitz. If I could draft one of the two, it would be McKivitz- an OT not getting much name recognition.

Enjoy the draft BBI !!!

I agree on Pittman - especially since Cosell spoke so highly of him

Would be a fabulous pick in the 7th round for Giants
Adding this athleticism to the backfield whether it’s QB or RB or a Taysum Hill type gives Garrett a lot of options in his play calling
Reference Smith-Williams at NCSU

I follow the wolfies closely and will say the entire team underachieved last year, including Smith-Williams. He is smart, already has his degree and a job offer from ibm that is good for whenever he’s had enough of football.
I’d go with the WVU OT as you suggest.

Agreed. Love him in the 7th. Could be a Taysom Hill type. Might be a good use of one of the extra roster spots
Great

stuff. Thanks.

I think Pittman will be selected near the top of round two, but the WR I really want is Jalen Reagor.

I'd also be thrilled to get Bryce Perkins in the 7th. He can't be a QB in the NFL, but as KDavies said, is an electric gadget type player similar to Taysom Hill.
Would love to see Perkins

succeed at the next level. Gave me my favorite football moment of 2019 with the win over tech and he plays with a lot of heart.
seem to recall seeing Driscoll

mentioned at C position before, either you or Sy' or maybe not.

Love hearing your stuff and hope some of this comes to fruition
With some creativity, Perk could be a very handy player

Taysom Hill is the obvious comp, and it's not an accident that he and Perkins both played for the same coach, Bronco Mendenhall. He doesn't quite have Hill's speed, but he's close and IMO is more elusive.
I liked Driscoll’s athleticism at the Combine but didn’t focus on

him at Auburn...their LT had my attention.

Hello my friend.Hope all is well. I like Cephus. He lacks that extra gear but he's physical and can make plays through contact. He can play the slot and outside. Despite small(under 9") hands he catches the ball well. BTW, he did run 4.56 at his pro day. As I am sure you know, he has a basketball background and didn't play his Jr. year due to some bogus legal problems.
Someone will get a good player here in the mid rounds.
Pittman

has a lot of fans.

He also has value on STs, though not as a returner. He contributed on coverage units at USC and displayed toughness doing it. But he only returned 4 kicks in college for a paltry 31 yards — not a lot of 6’4” returners across college and pro football.

He should go in the top-50, ahead of bigger names like Tee Higgins.
Paul Perkins

count me among those who missed his talent.

He averaged 3.5 ypc, offered almost no receiving value, and was pretty much out of the league by age 25.

Bryce might be a gadget player for someone, but isn’t the draftable version of this player Lynn Bowden?
"think WR Michael Pittman will also be drafted higher than predicted"
Torrag : 4/23/2020 7:04 pm : link
Same. I have him ahead of some of the more frequently mentioned late 1st Round WR's. I see him going Top 40 for sure and could crack the 1st round.

This WR class will not be forgiving of a guy who willingly ran a 4.7.

There were a number of a big-bodied WR who ran disappointing times, and and Cephus will optimistically find himself among that company. I’d compare him to Kelvin Harmon, who went in the 6th rd in a less competitive class.

5-6th rd seems about right for Cephus, Tyler Johnson, etc. League seems to be favoring speed & separation over contested catch ability. For example, I bet Thrill Ride fav 175lb Darnell Money (Tulane) goes ahead of Cephus and a bevy of other possession-types
