NFT: Older Movies to watch with kids

slickwilly : 5/15/2020 12:58 pm
Have a 10 year old son and 7 year old daughter. Recently been watching some of the older movies I watched as a kid with them. Goonies, ET, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones. Disney and most animated movies are covered for the most part. Any movies you can recommend that I'm not thinking of? Thanks!

but this blends new and old. Start them with the old Jumanji and go all the way through the new ones. I liked the new ones a lot.

Ha! Just kidding.

If you want to introduce them to some 'reel' classics (see what I did there):

The Adventures of Robin Hood

National Velvet

Lassie Come Home

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
Forever Young
Bill in Del : 5/15/2020 1:29 pm : link

And if not mentioned Avatar is another good one.

are great, plus when my kids were 10 we read them together and then watched the movie.

they do get dark after maybe the 3rd book/movie and your 7 old might be too young, but I loved it because it encouraged my kids to read more.

they moved on to Percy Jackson after Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, etc.

long books, that get kids thinking creatively IMO.
I saw ‘Night of the living Dead’ when I was 12 and I turned out ...

When my sons were young, I rented it and did a pre-view - I remembered it was a little rough. HOLY CRAP. I forgot how foul mouthed and racist Tanner was, decided against that one. Still, I enjoyed watching it again.

Old kid movies? Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is fun and holds up. Every kid must suffer the panic of the fucking KID CATCHER!!

The Pink Panther series
Greg from LI : 5/15/2020 2:05 pm : link
The real one, with Peter Sellers. That was a big hit with the kids. We've been watching a lot of older movies with our kids (12 and 10). Several have already been mentioned, but others we've enjoyed have included:

Three Amigos
Big
The Great Outdoors
Uncle Buck
Willow
Young Frankenstein
City Slickers
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Adventures In Babysitting
The Burbs
The Odd Couple
Grumpy Old Men

The Fugitive, starring DeAndre Baker.

Here's some
JohnF : 5/15/2020 2:33 pm : link
The Back to the Future trilogy
Superman (1978 Donner version, the best!)
Dr. Dolittle (the 1967 version with Richard Harris is a classic, unlike the recent garbage one)
The Great Race (1965, Jack Lemmon/Tony Curtis)
Bringing Up Baby (Cary Grant. Katherine Hepburn. A leopard. One of the best screwball comedies ever made. What more could you possibly want?)
Buck Privates ( Abbott and Costello's first movie, with "Who's on First", and many other classics!)

Yeah, some of these are black and while, but it's never too early to let kids know about the classic stuff!
Funny, we all just watched The
barens : 5/15/2020 2:40 pm : link
Mighty Ducks together(first time for me too), and that was a treat.

ET, The Natural with them. On their own, they found and watched Ghostbusters (and unfortunately the sequel), Gremlins (and unfortunately the sequel). My boys were not that interested in watching Rocky so I didn't push it.

I have been looking for Goonies and Sandlot, but neither were available (at least not for free). I should also look into Back to the Future. This thread also reminded me I loved Time Bandits as a kid and I should look for that as well.

Kids had no interest in Dark Crystal, Princess Bride, or Neverending Story. Personally, I could do without watching them also. A year or two ago they watched Black Stallion and loved it.
Forgot to add
Matt M. : 5/15/2020 3:14 pm : link
that they also found all 3 of the first 3 Indiana Jones movies. They loved Raiders the best.
I second
PEEJ : 5/15/2020 3:21 pm : link
The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad. One of my all-time favorites.
Time Bandits

Since the Ace Ventura movies have already been mentioned (my former handle was "Shikaka") ... two that stick out to me around that age range are 'Jumanji' and 'Mrs. Doubtfire'. I don't know why but those are the first two that popped in my mind.

The Black Stallion is one of the most beautifully photographed films ever. The DP, Caleb Deschanel also shot "Fly Away Home" with Anna Paquin and geese. Highly recommend it if you enjoyed Black Stallion. FLy Away Home is also incredibly beautifully shot.

Black Stallion is one of my childhood favorites and it is timeless. You are right, it ewas beautifully shot. My two favorite scenes are when the boy is riding Black on the beach when they were shipwrecked and he is pretending to be flying and when he is riding Black at the track in the driving rain and mud and he passes out.

Fly Away Home, Back to Future, Princess Bride, Mrs. Doubtfire - big hits w/ my 9 and 11 year old.

Put on Goonies but language offended even me. Same with BtF II - and it was trash to boot.

Kids also liked Field of Dreams, and Close Encounters even though they said it was weird.

Thanks, all, for suggestions - I jotted down a list.

Surprised I didn’t see it above. That’s a no brainer with Indy imo.

James Bond movies - maybe the kids are too young but I remember getting into the classic bond movies as a kid

Also Greg’s list was solid loved the classic pink panthers growing up
The original Planet of the Apes

I was like 10 years old when I watched that with my father and I remember that movie blowing my mind. The movie was 30+ years old when I watched it and it still held up.

It’s better to watch it younger before the ending is spoiled for you by constant pop culture references.
