NFT: Older Movies to watch with kids

slickwilly : 5/15/2020 12:58 pm
Have a 10 year old son and 7 year old daughter. Recently been watching some of the older movies I watched as a kid with them. Goonies, ET, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones. Disney and most animated movies are covered for the most part. Any movies you can recommend that I'm not thinking of? Thanks!

And The Karate Kid Part 2.

Not The Karate Kid Part 3 or The Next Karate Kid or the more recent remake with Jaden Smith.
The Last Dragon

Like Frankenstein, Dracula and The Mummy. My kids loved those and Godzilla movies.

Also older Bond movies.

One and two.

We just watched both of those last night. Still holds up.

I'll add Little Giants with Rick Moranis and Ed O'Neill.

If they like The Beatles, Help and A Hard Day’s Night might be fun

With younger kids, I used to just show the dance scenes

in Singin’ in the Rain, especially the Make em Laugh number, but I think kids 10 and 7 wouldn’t have interest in them.

Absent Minded Professor - the original(1 or Flubber) Disney plus

My kids like

Swiss Family Robinson. I am kicking around the Karate Kid but haven't made it through it yet to determine if there is anything I don't want them seeing.
I know this is for older movies

but two versions of Little Women are both really good.

Both have star studded casts. Both beautifully shot.

The older version has a linear story and the writing and acting are terrific.

Newer version moves between times but I think it actually enhances the story.

Both really good for children 14 and under.
Mystery Men

Fly Away Home.
Fly Away Home.
Fly Away Home.

If you and your kids only want entertaining kids' stuff, then there are dozens to choose from. If you want a touching, realistic, breathtakingly beautiful, and inspiring film, this is it. Note that its pace is not zippy; I consider that a strength. The heroine is a young teenage girl, and the flying theme will appeal to everyone. Absolutely gorgeous cinematography and a wonderfully understated vibe.

I haven't seen this film, but the description reminds me of the recent remake of Pete's Dragon. It's also wonderfully understated and has some surprising musical choices ("So Long Marianne" by Leonard Cohen??).
