there is league mandated time suspended for carrying an illegal weapon. The NFL needs to sent a strong message on players carrying guns with no license.
No mini camps sitting around in quarantine leaves those prone to it too much time, money and opportunity to get into trouble.
I don’t agree. Keeping to an NFL training schedules shouldnt be needed to keep you from breaking the law. Shit excuse - what about the rest of us? Heck what about athletes in every other sport?
Locking down society indefinitely is a terrible idea. And I say this as an ER nurse
I totally respect and thank you for your service as an ER nurse. However, to blame these "missteps" on the lock down is wrong. These guys are knuckleheads. We can't say for certain but I'd say the odds were overwhelmingly in favor of these idiots getting into some sort of trouble at some point regardless of the Corona virus lockdown.

If you don't think the lockdown is having an effect on people's mental health and pushing some people that are more prone to bad decisions over the edge than you are delusional. That is like the first rule in military, idle soldiers are a time bomb waiting to happen.
but I’m seeing it used as the excuse. Going stir crazy isn’t an excuse to commit desirous crimes. It also begs the question - why are all other athletes able to act normal? The NFL still has a huge issue with players breaking the law and quarantine or not, these guys are still acting like assholes.

You're proving my point in your reply when you say "people that are more prone to bad decisions". In other words, these are idiots who would have made bad decisions at some point in their lives...with or without a lockdown.

So you think regular folks of all ages pent up at home have a similar mental psychological profile as a bunch of 18-25 year old men trained to kill for reasons they most likely don't even begin to fathom?
I'm selling on that observation.
Lol dude you need to stop getting your ideas of what the military
is like from movies. 99 percent aren't trained to kill. If anything football players fit that bill more than military, these guys play a violent sport for a living. So yeh your argument actually applies more to football players.

So you agree this "pent up" theorem doesnt apply to a representative cross section of reqular people?
Thanks for proving my point.
It most definitely applies to young people under 25 with brains that
haven't hit full maturity and our prone to making bad decisions. Hence the military and NFL players are a good cross section to compare to. Keeping them busy helps keep them out if trouble.

I know tons of people that made bad decisions when they were younger that grew out of it. Lots of risk taker types, which I imagine the NFL is full of. He's a 22 year old from Texas. Newsflash they don't view guns the way that people do in NYC. It's not illegal to have unregistered guns.
Every team has bad actors. There's no way you can field 60 young, rich men who hit each other for a living and not have a portion of irresponsible or violent people.
This is why I've always felt the a GM "fixing" culture is a joke.
Culture is about the staff managing the character flaws of the team, not the HR manager managing out every player with character flaws.
You know he thought about drafting Oliver last year!
Yep, this is the BBI we all know and love!
BTW, I am happy to see all these bad boy NFL players are at least getting popped for gun charges.
That means they are being responsible and at least attempting to practice social distancing while engaging in their wild crime sprees! Bravo.... And some of you old stick in the mud boomers around here try to claim these guys are not role models? Methinks you owe them an apology!
That would be really irresponsible. A half measure, really. If youre gonna issue guns you have to issue Fall Guys as well. Just more half-assed chicken shit from Goodell...
just because it’s hard or even impossible to do doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be something to strive for.
You're missing my point. I'm saying it's
not something a GM can fix. You can't cut or avoid every player with character flaws.
The staff has to be able to manage through guys like that.
Tom Coughlin coached through Strahan, Toomer, Boley, etc. -- these were guys doing real world off the field bizarre and criminal things.
The personell guys should certainly avoid deeply problematic people. But otherwise it's a complete fairy tale to think a football team won't have and can't succeed with some idiots on it.
I just think people take GM quotes so damn literally. DG should want to fix the culture as much as possible and the staff should be able to manage those players who aren’t the best cultural fits.
The 2017 Giants were in a state of basic insurrection. That was where the culture talk was coming from. And it was accurate. It needed to be rooted out.

My reading between the lines is that they got rid of anyone who complained about upper management.

So close to insurrection that in that in the next offseason the Giants extended Beckham, signed Latimer, drafted Baker, retained Jenkins and then subsequently annointed him mentor of puppies, and signed Golden Tate.
Maybe this cultural vetting process needs another look?
There is nothing to dwell..
Or they just need to use common sense

Haha, most of this board loved Oliver. And there were red flags.
Red flag - ( New Window )
Exactly! Let’s fire his ass for even giving Oliver consideration!
And all night to get there
Is it any wonder I'm not a criminal?
Is it any wonder I'm not in jail?
Too much time on my hands
The saying “idle hands are the devils playground” comes to mind. Bunch of young guys with a lot of money and nothing but time to kill.
😂😂😂😂
I knew this was Gettleman's fault! I am even willing to bet that Gettleman corrupted this poor young man during the pre-draft interviews.

Really? THIS IS WHY?
That's some deep observation mate!
There must be 1000 better examples of how a lockdown is pejorative, starting with huge unemployment and other economic maladies.
But one dufus driving drunk with an unlicensed weapon is what you cite?

And it's not like NFL players committing crime is a new development. Odds are these guys would be doing the same if this was a normal time.

I do take your point about Jenkins and Beckham. I think Jackrabbit was a dead man walking pretty much immediately. Can't be sure.
I do think they wanted to salvage OBJ. I also think that was a Mara deal.
My view is and has always been the Giants have had weak head coaching from the end of the Coughlin years up until hopefully now.
A strong head coach sets the tone and culture and can most certainly handle strong and imperfect people.
Unless we’re talking about deeply flawed humans, I don’t think the HR folks can really make a difference.
