DeAndre Baker's attorney believes the Giants cornerback is the victim of a "shakedown" and is being accused of a crime he did not commit. But he also believes Baker has been "scared straight" by this brush with the law, and will come out of this a better man than he was before.
"He's got an opportunity to become the next Ray Lewis and not the next Ray Rice," attorney Patrick G. Patel said in an exclusive interview with SNY late Sunday night. "There's two guys who went in two different directions. I told DeAndre that. And he seems very focused. He's scared straight. I can say that." |
1. I always thought good lawyers go with the no comment route instead of proclaiming their clients innocence in the media.
2. Why the hell are you comparing Baker's charges to Ray Lewis - who was charged with two counts of murder?
Why would Rice be the cautionary tale that Baker's attorney would choose?
I don't pretend what led him to the trouble he is in and neither do you, but what happened is NOT 'repeated' behavior.
I imagine Baker has had quite the awakening. I doubt he dresses again as a Giant, but hope for the best for him.
What the fuck has Ray Lewis done compared to that.

Leopards just don't change their spots.
So he's been arrested for robbery and threatening other's with a gun before?

I'm talking about his behavior last season. Falling asleep in meetings, dogging it on the field, disrespecting vets (and most likely his coaches, too).
Fuck that noise.
Criminal or not, wrongfully accused or not, it's what he's done on the field that matters to me, and what he's done on the field - and in the meeting room - is a fucking disgrace. Now, I'm supposed to believe that he's been "scared straight?" That he's all of a sudden going to become a model player as well as a model citizen?
As I said, I'll believe that when I see it.
Why would Rice be the cautionary tale that Baker's attorney would choose?
Yeah, I’m mean if he wanted to stick with rays in the example, Rae Carruth would have been a better choice.
That said, it takes an unusual person to change his life path.
We shall see.
Read Ralph's interview with the attorney.
Baker allegedly calling for his masked accomplice to murder someone and the Fast and Furious getaway should be a clue.
This clearly doesn't add up.
Talent is a pretty nebulous word.
Effective, productive or reliable are probably better choices. And to date he has been neither of these.
'Guilty until proven innocent' has become the new law of the land
If the "4 witnesses" actually recanted as to Baker (from what I've read the witnesses allegedly recanted as to Dunbar) you'd think the lawyers would be working with the Police instead of running them down in the press (saying that the case is "complete garbage" and "everything" in the arrest warrant is wrong).
Really fucking weird stance. Usually defense lawyers say something real brief like "My client is innocent of these charges and he will be cooperating with the authorities to get to the truth." But I guess this is the new normal.

Here’s an open question: In this day and age, are you (editorial you) saying, that no one took a phone video of whatever transpired, which might put the lie or truth to this entire mess?

me naive, but the original story never made sense (a multi-millionaire robbing people at a house party). Now we have four witnesses who have recanted their testimony. A shakedown makes more sense.

Doesn’t sound completely unfeasible either, at least to me.
Things get heated at a high stakes game, not impossible
Baker brought a gun to the game, he has a concealed carry permit so this is likely.
Telling some one to shoot another person, probably just tough talk
The getaway is what it is. Three guys came in three cars and left in three cars.
yup
Ray Lewis killed someone and got away with it and is an asshole. I don't think that's the right model to shoot for....
“He seems like a changed individual. In two days. Sometimes going to jail does that. He’s scared straight."
Oh, so he IS (was?) a crook, or at least a fuck-up and an asshole, who DOES need to change his ways. Even assuming charges are dropped, we never learn the full story, and the gun was legal, gambling and drink and guns are not a good look. That shit's dangerous.
I don't know if the guy is guilty or innocent. I wasn't there. Last summer - I'll admit I wasn't impressed with him in practice or through the first part of the season -- but he had terrible coaches on an awful team and he still improved over the course of the season. I'm not ready to give up on a first rounder with his natural abilities without more evidence that he's just no good on the field - especially if he's innocent.

If someone’s got a gun drawn in close quarters, I’m not gonna pull out my cell phone and give him a reason to shoot.

Ron, since when has that stopped anyone in today’s world of filmimg everything. Not buying. I certainly wouldn’t take my phone out, but others? Nowadays?
What the fuck has Ray Lewis done compared to that.
The picture I got was there was a bigger party with a smaller group in one room gambling
That’s pretty speculative though.

at this party, fine. I can buy that. But if there were many? Not buying.

According to Dave just above, his lawyer said there are videos. We’ll see.
Well it’s the defense who says there is a video, not the prosecution
I wonder what Coach Judge thinks about him not be involved in conferences even before this? I know it is voluntary but with new coach not real smart.
I also think these are 21-22 year old kids with a lot of money and a lot of free time on their hands, which is a recipe for disaster.
I have mixed feelings about Baker because as a selfish fan, I want him to play and succeed. I also think its unfair that people of prominence who commit crimes are given a much lighter touch than those not as privileged.
If Baker weren't our starting cornerback, I think know one would give a rats ass about this dispute and would assume he is guilty of what he is charged of.
Baker better get his career back, he'll need the dough to cover his attorney fees.
As for scared straight I'm skeptical.
Although the bulk of the red flags were about maturity, work ethic, and entitlement, things understandable enough in a young highly talented athlete. Still, he doesn't seem to fit what DG claimed to be doing in the locker room, nor the type of smart and versatile player Patrick Graham and Joe Judge are looking for.
Whatever the outcome of the criminal case, I'm betting he will be released by the Giants.
To keep it out of evidence.
So maybe leave it with your lawyer. Forever.

several witnesses have recanted, so either the whole thing was a shakedown or the witnesses have received an offer they cant refuse
But if this truely scarded him straight then I am glad for that. No need for anymore sensless violence in this world.
Feel like an old man saying this but it feels like 20-25 year olds are progresing into 15 year olds these days. Seems to me less and less understand how real things are.
I tried to use it in college when I got caught peeing off a balcony and was threatened with expulsion from campus.
Didn't work out for the pjcas18 legal team (which included such high priced well known mock litigators such as pjcas18), I hope Baker fares better.
This guy is saying he never did anything to begin with.
