SNY: Baker's atty says his client has been scared straight

DeAndre Baker's attorney believes the Giants cornerback is the victim of a "shakedown" and is being accused of a crime he did not commit. But he also believes Baker has been "scared straight" by this brush with the law, and will come out of this a better man than he was before.

"He's got an opportunity to become the next Ray Lewis and not the next Ray Rice," attorney Patrick G. Patel said in an exclusive interview with SNY late Sunday night. "There's two guys who went in two different directions. I told DeAndre that. And he seems very focused. He's scared straight. I can say that."

DeAndre Baker's the victim of a 'shakedown,' says Giant cornerback's attorney - ( New Window )

his lawyer may not be that good.

1. I always thought good lawyers go with the no comment route instead of proclaiming their clients innocence in the media.

2. Why the hell are you comparing Baker's charges to Ray Lewis - who was charged with two counts of murder?

If you followed the story, they were trying to go the no comment route but due to how big this got in the media he had to release a statement in order to quell the “mob” who were trying to crucify him. Has nothing to do with how good or bad a lawyer is, this is a terrible statement

Part of handling high profile legal cases is having a comms strategy to deal with the media. So I disagree a bit.
As far as people calling Baker's lawyer an idiot

Seems he was pretty smart to have Baker wait until he got these affidavits before Baker turned himself in

Scared straight that hanging out at low security card games in the ghetto when you are a multimillionaire with a lot more to lose than the other people at the table.

Ah, so he's the victim? Good to know.

but I'm gonna pull some asinine robbery like this? I don't know if he has committed a crime before, but clearly if he did he wouldn't be stupid enough to do something like what he is accused of.

Never underestimate the ability of "the more balls than brains" folk from doing something stupid.

I am not saying Dunbar and Baker did anything, but the old saying -"young, dumb and full of cum" doesn't materialze from nothing.

I hear you, I've done many, many dumb things especially at that age in my lifetime. Just think it's a bit extreme to go from no criminal record to armed robbery when you actually "made it" and are in the NFL. It just doesn't add up to me.

If this did go down anything like the initial reports said, I have a feeling it had to do with gambling grievance, and was not just a straight up money heist. Baker felt like he was wronged somehow or that it was his mo way and had a right to forcibly recover it.

*his money, and had a right to forcibly recover it.

He would have been scared straight much quicker and for less money.

What’s worse, calling him a victim or saying “he’s definitely guilty of something.” You’ve got baker signed, sealed and delivered as guilty without knowing a fucking thing. Care to share why?
lawyers are paid advocates. probably well paid in this case. lawyers

usually don’t lie, but don’t tell the truth frequently. the better the lawyer the better they can not tell the truth, but not lie.

So what Bakers lawyer says is good for Baker. The truth, the whole truth, may come put about Baker over time. But do we really know the whole truth about anyone? Maybe my wife who is a very special person. My daughter on the other hand who i love unbelievably, uncircumstantially, unconditionally, and fully, always said “Ask me no questions, I’ll tell you no lies.”. She was right too,

Knowing the truth about people, are they ever scared into a turn, is anything a wake up call, etc? Not really. And in a very real sense my business was about knowing people and I was very good at it.

the difference between Baker and ex-players like Lewis and Rice, is that no-one ever questioned their work ethic or effort.

True. But Baker is young so I hold out hope he does "wake up" and learn a lesson.

My prayer is the charges are dropped, he makes it to camp, and I'm going to be the NFL suspends him just because they can for 4 games? I just pray is all.

I hope the kid gets his act together as well, that said, I, nor you or anyone here knows what happened. For me, as a fan, I just don't want that on my team that I root for. Too much to ask for me.

There's a point you cross between being a stupid idiot, and something worse than that. If he finds god, a work ethic, and a moral code all at once, than he should consider himself lucky. But I don't have the patience for someone to figure that out while getting paid large sums of $$.
Scared straight enough
